| Nature's Variety raw...or any raw, for that matter... So I saw a pamphlet on Nature's variety raw foods at zamzows the other day...I've been curious to try raw for a while, I just don't think we can afford it. This brand has freeze dried medallions, and a suggestion was to break it up over the dog's regular food, and you'll still get some of the benefit of feeding raw. I just have a few questions. About how much does it cost for the raw stuff? Do you think that just half to one serving of raw per day is enough to make a difference for my boys? is nature's variety good, or should I try something different? Thanks to all answers - I've never fed any raw food, but I'm thinking my boys would love it!

We've switched to The Honest Kitchen. Its freeze dried raw but in a powder form. The fact that its fit for human consumption along with the reasonable prices did it for me. I feed Winston for about $5 a week. Some dogs don't do well on it - but its been great for Winston. His teeth also look awesome which has been a nice unexpected side effect.

| We just recently started feeding raw. We started with Primal raw & we do half raw & half kibble. We tried chicken the first time & two of our girls seemed to have an allergic reaction to it. So then we bought venison, which they LOVED! We did buy Nature's Variety this time since we can get it a little closer to home. We are feeding the Bison right now, it's a 3lb bag & it cost $17-18. We stopped at a store yesterday and they had the raw on sale for $9.98 So we bought two! (Normal price is $14.50) I think the Primal was actually a better price normally because it cost about the same as NV, but it was a 4lb bag. Wrigley hates the raw & will NOT eat it. The other two really like it!

| I think if you feed 1/2 raw, it's better than all kibble. But obviously, all raw is best IMO. I actually feed prey model raw which is very affordable - cheaper really than kibble and cleaning up is SOOO much easier. I do buy pre made raw as well like NV just for those days when I'm really busy or haven't taken anything out to thaw. |

| I think that if you make your own raw diet it is cheaper- but you have to feel comfortable doing it. Where I buy my pre made raw (because I can't always remember to get out meat to defrost..whoops) it is around $15 for 3lbs of chicken. The place I buy the premade from also gives out lots of buy one get one free coupons. I am able to get in a grocery store chicken for about 79cent a lb, ground beef/turkey for about $1.99/lb, liver for $3.99 for a big pack, and other random I can't remember right now...haha. My dog is 110lbs, so I go through MUCH more food than a yorkie would, but it is cheaper for me to feed raw than the EVO I was feeding. I was able to get meat from a coop so it is even cheaper than the grocery store. |

Mine LOVED it, A LOT and it actually smelled really good... usually I think all dog foods smell awful. You dont need to add kibble into it.

| So would it be bad for my boys if I bought raw meat at the grocery store and fed it to them? I don't want to make my little ones sick, but I looked at prices of raw, and they're pretty dang high.

Just make sure you are doing it right. They need to be fed 80% meat, 10% bones, and 10% organs (5% that is liver). There is a fabulous yahoo group that I would join if you are going to feed prey model raw. There is a wealth of information in the archives and the people are helpful- sometimes a little say it like it is- but still very helpful.

I don't sanitize anything, other then normal bowl washing. (I'm lazy to be honest, I just have two bowls and swap.) The only thing you do have to remember is that you obviously can't leave it out. You could mix it in with dry food, but its balanced all by itself, you just add the warm water - let it soak and then scoop it out. (I always use excess water but thats just me, Winston inhales his food so when its thinner he has to slow down.) I feed Winston keen (and sometimes verve), but do keep in mind that unlike whats listed on your link - its not gluten free... but low gluten. Their no gluten food is the thrive, which has a more unique and watery texture. (Winston is not fond of it so its been sitting around here for a while.)

| We just started Kasha on raw yesterday. She's losing teeth & hasn't been eating and true to Yorkie style ... is picky and wont eat wet food. I was SHOCKED to see she gobbled down her food yesterday and today, which is something she never did with kibble. We paid 14 for the 48 medallions, which for her is about 3 weeks since we are adding kibble. I'm pretty much converted. Does anyone feed raw & travel with their babies? I am going out of town with Kasha in a week but how on earth do I/don't I travel with her food?
