| I stopped free feeding my dogs, because it made my Shih Tzu a more finicky eater. Now I feed my dogs once a day, and my Shih Tzu eats at mealtime. The only thing I leave out all day is their water bowl. I understand that free feeding dogs work for you guys, but it did not work for my Shih Tzu so I had to stop. If your dog is a finicky eater, then the two links listed below might help you. http://www.smalldogsparadise.com/faqs/how-to-deal-with-dogs-who-are-finicky-eaters/ http://www.ehow.com/how_2205621_dog-eat.html |

BANNED FOR NOT SENDING A GIFT EXCHANGE GIFT! | this is the same in my case when i leave for work at 7am i measure his food and always leave water hubby checks bowl when he leaves for work at 12pm and food is always left. then when i get home at 330pm we take a walk and he has fresh food and water when we get back from our walk 4:30 maybe sometimes 5pm. so he gets what he needs and what he wants to eat and his weight is fine. |

| We "free fed" Annie and she ate when she hungary. Never over ate. When we had Annie, DJ and Harley D, there was always a bowl of kibble in addition to their being fed 2X a day. Same for Zack and Zeke. All have not over ate. No weight problems. Just lucky I guess. I have seen the bowl of dry food sit untouched/very little for days before throwing it away.

YT 1000 Club Member | Roxie's the only one here so I free feed her. She's a grazer and I can pretty much moniter her bowl. If she's hungry she'll eat. Plus she gets some extra things besides dry kibble. No weight problem. Very healthy.

In the wild it is survival of the fittest...he is gobbling because the food because it disappears until the next meal...unlike food always being readily available. I have brought three dogs in my household who were used to scheduled feeding times...and yes in the beginning they ate "more" ...that changed quickly once they realize there is food always available.

| I have always tried to give Sasha "scheduled feedings", but it just doesn't work for her. I find it much easier to just free feed her, that way she can just pick at her food or eat when she's hungry. She usually gets 1/4 cup of food a day. Depending on when she finishes that, sometimes she gets about 1/8 of a cup in the evening, usually only if she gobbles up the 1/4 cup in the morning, but that only happens once in a great while. Her weight is excellent (at least I think so =)) |

| Thanks everyone for your answers. I leave 3 bowls out with Innovia kibble (small bite) and of course Dudley is only 4mo. old, 2lbs. of dyamite. lol!!! He eats in his kennel because the others like baby food. I can't see Kayla eats all that much. SHe is 8lbs. She is square as a little box. Cute as a button, but, I thought she might be too fat. Its more solid than fat. My husband says she is not fat, its all muscle. When I split a can of food at dinner that really does not give them a whole lot. I give Lexi the most because she is one of the schnauzers and the largest. We give them carrots, or bites of cheese for snacks. They like cherrios and I also give them MOther Hubbard bones. I just don't know why she is soooo chucky. Dudley's breeder kinda scared me because she said they have such tiny arteries that you never want them to get over weight. We never feed them from the table. Maybe, Kayla is just suppose to be alittle bigger???? Her mother and dad were 4lbs. Go figure???????? Thanks again for everyone's input. |

| I free feed my 3. That is the only way I can get them to eat dry food. When we are at work I leave a bowl of food for them to snack on during the day. Breakfast and supper they get boiled chicken or grilled turkey. I mix it with eggs or cottage cheese and sometimes a little cheese.

| Milo will also only eat if someone is in the room with him. He generally eats his meals at the same time we do although we do leave kibble out all day just in case. |

| Winston eats pretty much constantly...his kibble is down for him at all times...plus he must eat every couple hours to keep his blood sugar up. Obviously he is not the "norm" as he is 8 pounds and 5 years old and still has hypoglycemic seizures...go figure???
