In the wild it is survival of the fittest...he is gobbling because the food because it disappears until the next meal...unlike food always being readily available. I have brought three dogs in my household who were used to scheduled feeding times...and yes in the beginning they ate "more" ...that changed quickly once they realize there is food always available.
