| did your baby gain weight after neutering? HI, I was just wondering did your baby gain weight after being neutered? I had Teddy done about two months ago, and he feels like hes gained at least 4 or 5 lbs. He eats twice a day 1/2 cup Iams in the morning and 1/2 in the evening. A few treats here and there and thats it. When I had him done the vet said he weight 7 3/4 lbs. He sure does'nt now, its really no big deal I was just wondering if having him neutered could have caused the extra weight? Sharon |

| The neutering can cause weight gain, but it sounds like he is getting a bit too much low quality food. I don't want to make you feel bad, but Iams is filled with by-products and cheap fillers that do not make it the healthiest choice for your baby, and can cause serious weight-gain. There are lots of great foods out there that are healthier and really not that much more expensive than something like Iams. Have you taken him by the vet's office to weigh him? Maybe you could get a quick check-up and see if he is overweight or just a teapot!! BTW, a bigger baby is fun!! So much more to love!!

| Gus was neutered at 10 months of age. That was a little over two months ago. He's gained weight (8 lbs now), but I don't know if it's due to the neutering. My wife & resident teenage niece tell me he's fat, but I think he's cobby. I recently started feeding him Wellness for small breeds mixed with a little Wellness white fish & sweet potato. I give him 1/4th cup in the morning, & 1/4th cup in the evening. He gets treats, and whatever else he can steal. I'd like to see him weigh in at 7 lbs, and be happy and healthy.

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | I agree Iams is lousy food.. I use to think it was good also. The price is high, but quality is low. Switch his food. Aiden was 12 lb swhen I had him neutered at 6 mo.. He's long ,but not over weight. I use Nutro. He's a brute, but his breath, coat, teeth, and energy are all awesome.

| Well Im glad I asked. I did'nt know Iams was bad I thought I was buying something good for them, because of the name I guess. I also have a female yorkie (Chloe) she is 2 1/2 and probably weighs 9-9 1/2 lbs. she was 4 lbs. when I got her at 4 months old. I have always fed her Iams never anything different because I thought I was buying a good quality dog food. Chloe is shorter in the body than Teddy and she has a tiny face and little feet. Teddy on the other hand is longer than her, his feet are really big compared to hers and he is just bigger built. We love him just the same he is just bigger even thou she is a little taller. What kind of food do you suggest? I live in a very small town so I need something that wont be to hard to find or get. Thanks for all your help sharon |

| Toby, my chorkie was neutered at 6 months and he started to gain weight even though he was eating a little less than before. He is 11 months now and he walks for an hour every day and is hyper and always running around the house and garden but is still slightly on the porkie side 9we nicknamed him pavaroti for this). It is due to the fact that his body is producing less testosterone which has caused his thyroid to burn less calories. As long as they are healthy it dosn't matter if they are slightly plump, there is just more of them to love. However yorkie owners should be careful with keeping their dog at a reasonably healthy weight as they are predesposed to arthritis and other joint problems which can be excassebated by carrying too much weight. |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | I agree with the food advice...you should try and find something better than Iams, also...you are over feeding him. He should not be eating a cup of food a day...limit the treats too.

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | My guys sure did.....the vet told me to expect it and to beware that they will eat more but to be careful to not let them gain too much weight. He said when you remove these hormone producers (ovaries and testicles) there is a change in their body due to a lack of those hormones being produced and they tend to gain some weight because of the change. So it's to be expected but you shouldn't let it get too out of hand. Shoot when I had my tubes tied I gained a few pounds ;0)

| My Mo was neutered when he was 3 yos--right after I got him. His wt was 4.6 and that was 2 years ago. He has gained one pound since being neutered. I would imagine when they are neutered younger some of the gain would be normal growth. Mo was obviously done growing at that point. I know they do tend to gain some though.

My yorkies eat Royal Canin Mini Adult. I know it is not the best but at this point it is what they will eat. <sigh> They tend to be a little finicky. I want to educate myself in making their food myself. Good luck in finding what works best for your pups. Whatever food you choose, if you decide to change be sure to switch them over to it slowly.

Where do you live in GA? If you give us the names of the dog foods available to you, we may be able to point you in a good direction, or you can check out the sticky at the top of page 1 of the "Health & Diet" forum....a lot of those companies will even send samples if you call or email them, that way you can see if he likes it before you buy a whole bag. You can also go on most of those companies' web sites to search if they have locations near you. | |
