| I hope they don't outlaw it. It hurts for maybe five seconds and is over with. Some human parents get their babies ears pierced (not saying I agree). That isn't painful? Will that be outlawed too? I absolutely DO NOT agree with declawing cats though. It is very painful and quite barbaric. It is isn't a five second thing either. I still can't say it should be outlawed though. It is between a person and their vet... I guess if we can't dock tails because it is a cosmetic procedue, we can't remove dewclaws because it is cosmetic also. Leaving dewclaws is more dangerous to the dog than cutting them. And how many other things will a dog have to go through that are more painful than tail docking? Spay/neuter recovery, shots, microchip... I did feel the same way some of you do a few years ago (feeling bad for Ellie that she doesn't have a tail) but I don't give it much thought now. It isn't hurting her... It's a personal preference.

| Another pix of Sophie's tail :) Here's another picture of Sophie and her beautiful tail. I like the docked and un-docked tail look. To tell you the truth, I hadn't ever seen a yorkie up-close that HAD a tail.... but when I saw Sophie for the first time.... her little tail a-waggin'.... I fell in love with the whole package. I think that once you're in love with the dog, having a tail or not really doesn't matter. |

| The cases i have seen where 'do it yourself' breeders have mucked it up and caused infections and prolonged suffering, even death in some cases, really angers me! if docking were banned these inexperienced breeders wouldn't feel the need to do this just to make their pups more appealing to buyers. take a look at the website link i posted earlier in this thread...all those poor dead puppies...their deaths caused by tail docking.

| I think the risk of injury or death is extremely low if it is done correctly. I don't think it would be fair to tell reputable breeders they can't do it because some other breeders don't know how to do it correctly.

| Imagine what it would be like if we were all lined up, and a finger was cut off. It might only take a few seconds, but would it hurt? Yep! Would we miss it? Yep. Would it be traumatic? Definetely. Even if they are only three days old, and don't remember much, what an awful welcome into this world. It just makes me shudder to think of the needless pain they must suffer. As I said earlier, my two have docked tails, but if I would have a choice, they wouldn't be. Sorry, it's only my opinion, but I feel very strongly about it. Janelles |

| cutting off tails, and the trimming of ears to shape...just to make them more pleasing to our eyes...

| I personally don't care if their tails are left long. They are cute either way and it makes no difference. I just don't think it is that serious of an issue. I would understand legislation that states only vets can do it though.

| I would never buy a yorkie with an undocked tail, especially being in the US where the standard calls for it to be docked. In my opinion, no reputable show breeder is going to leave the tails undocked when the standard calls for it. I very much prefer the docked look...I've seen a couple full tails that look cute on the yorkie but most take away from the neat appearance and silouette (sp?) of the breed. A docked tail is not only for sanitary purposes and safety for the tail, but is also a part of our breeds history. I think if anyone in the US ever tries to ban tail docking, there will be quite an uproar and fight against it...I hope nothing like that is ever passed here. Tail docking, when done on a newborn and properly done, is not cruel. The bones aren't hardened and nerves aren't fully formed at that point...the puppies are fine right after the procedure. What about circumcision? Should it be made illegal? It's an elective procedure but the babies can't really say if they want it done or not. There is really no purpose for it other than cosmetic (and maybe sanitation)...same to me as docking a puppy's tail.

| I like the look of both the long tail and the docked tail. How ever, these are God's creations, and he made them with tails. What the standard calls for is people changing what God has designed to please themselves. As far as I am concerned that is down right selfish. if Sadie didn't have her tail I would have bought her any way... I love the docked tail look. But if the choice were mine I could not say yes dock the tail. My breeder is a reputable show breeder, and she doesn't dock tails. She doesn't want to put the pups or the mom through it any more. Sadie's brother is going to be shown with his tail. Sadie is as clean as any of the dogs here. Her tail doesn't get in the way of going to the bathroom... There are many dogs with long tails that have no problem in this area so that just makes no sense to me.

Yes, it's selfish thing, and seriously we wouldn't want our ears or fingers be cut off either just because someone thinks it looks pretty. | |
