| Undocked tails.... I told the tragic story of Milo a couple of days go, but I forgot to mention something that I found so weird about him: his tail wasn't docked!! Here in the States that must be odd, because I'd honestly never seen a Yorkie with tail intact before. The weirder thing is, even though before I thought that any Yorkie I got had to have its tail docked, I actually LIKED it! I liked how animated it was when wagging and I just thought it gave a "complete" look to the dog. Basically, his body would go from highest on the top of the head, down to the flat back (longest part of the body) and back up for a 5 inch tail high in the air. I thought it was great. If we end up getting another one, I think I'd like to go undocked, but unfortunately I don't think many breeders do that. |

| I don't think any breeder in the US who shows Yorkies will leave them undocked. If you get on a breeders waiting list and leave a deposit they might consider not docking if that's what you want...

| If you talk to a breeder ahead of time and reserve one before it is born, you couild ask them not to dock the tail. I did not have the tail docked on Lil Bit because he was very fragile at the time it needed to be done. We can get it done when we have him neutered if we want. I might like it by then and decide not to do it. |

Mom to Marty & Maddie Donating Member | Personally, I'd LOVE to have one with a tail. I've seen the pictures and think they are just incredibly adorable! I also hate reading about getting the tails docked. It makes me so sad to think of such little ones being hurt just to get a certain look. (Not saying that those who do this or like it are bad, just that I couldn't do it.) |

| Many - if not all - European countries consider it absolutely barbaric to cut (read: butcher, maim) an animal simply to satisfy some archaic standard for "beauty". Ear trims and tail dockings are just not done anymore. In fact, it would disqualify an animal from showing on the European circuits. It's rather startling to see a flop-earred, long-tailed Dobie to us, but I'm sure the Europeans think it's equally horrifying to see the cropped dogs *we* call Dobermans. Some dogs come by them naturally; Westies and Scotties all have nice perky ears and medium length tails - but they're born with them. Yorkies are so energetic and enthusiastic ... I bet a long tail is just icing on the cake . |

| I have googled why they are docked in the first place and didnt manage to get an answer. I love the long tails on the few that I have seen on here. What is the reasoning behind it?

| I think you'll have a hard time getting an undocked puppy from a reputable breeder in the US.

| Is there *ANY* benefit to docking the tail?? Or is it just to satisfy a part of the standard that the Gods at the AKC have set forth on what is "acceptable" and what is "yucky"? |

| I got those links from another thread on docking...I remember reading that last one about a week ago. It pretty much said the same thing as the first article but also had more info about the case against docking.
