| Hi and welcome. Sophie had legg perthes disease and had surgery just three weeks ago. Sophie also had some baby teeth and they pulled them at the same time. Sophie will be a year in June and her teeth were in there pretty good. But I was amazed at how well she did. Her teeth never bothered her and wanted to chew on a chew toy immediately. The doctor told us that it could take up to six weeks before she would start using the leg. But it took two weeks and runs everywhere. She is so much happier now even the vet commented on a post check up. She must have been in pain, which I feel terrible about. We are so proud of her. We will wait a little longer and then set a appointment up to get her spayed.

| Hi everyone... Happy Wednesday!! Well, I picked my Jazzy up this afternoon. I have to say she really is doing good. She was so happy to see me That made me feel SO good!!! I was not sure what to expect. She has eaten today, which I was hoping for as she is barely 3lbs now... and is doing alot of resting... She has Big Red".. a red soft cast from hip to toe and it is very clumsy for her to try to get around as it is very long. I noticed at the top of the cast where it is hitting her shaved skin the cast is really irritating her and raw. I have been putting some cream on that area to try to lessen the irritation for her .. Poor baby...I bring her back on Friday for a bandage change and see where we go from there. I saw the XRays and she has 2 pins crossways right below the knee cap. They looked HUGE in the XRay.. Kinda freaky... How do the pins stay in those little leg bones... amazing!! Thanks to everyone for your emails, thoughts & prayers. I just LUV this YT place, I only wish I had met you all sooner... God Bless and will chat soon... Oh, I attached a couple of pictures of my girl... The first 2 are very recent 10 months...and the 3rd was taken when she was about 4 months.. She is a little thing.... I just luv her so much.. I will send more pictures soon. I will get on of her with Big Red... |

| Now that is the best news I have heard all day! I hope the cast comes off soon as I feel bad that it is rubbing on the shaven part of her leg... Thank you for the update! |

| Hi Michelle, If you are going through with the surgery I would recommend that you have just one leg done at a time. My little Alex was diagnosed with LP and he was a severe case. I initially had the surgery on both rear legs when he was 1 year old. He recovered and everything seemed fine for a couple of months and then he started limping again. Basically, the surgery was a failure at a cost of $1500.00. I got around to taking him to another specialist when I moved to Dallas. He said that he only believes in doing one leg at a time otherwise you will not get the benefits of full recovery or you will have a complete surgery failure altogether. Alex had his second surgery in March 2006 and he is doing great! However, it did cost me another $1000.00 but my dog is worth it. All I am saying is please take what I am saying into consideration. The surgery is successful if performed correctly. Please have your vet refer you to a canine orthopedic specialist. Good Luck |

| Hey gang, Hope everyone is doing well... Jazz is doing well. Her spirits are wonderful, she has been eating pretty good and resting... I took her back to the specialist office today to say goodbye to "Big Red".. (This was her red soft cast from hip to toe)... They said she looks good, and the inscision looks like it is healing nicely. They did not put a new bandage on her & the stitches don't come out until next week, so now the fun begins.... I know I really have to watch her good to make sure that she is not licking or chewing.. I hate to use the E-Collar as she is just miserable in it... but I will if I have too..she has been good about leaving them alone, but I am not letting her out of my sight at this point. I am sure that her leg feels different today as she doesnt have the support from the bandage, but once she starts wanting to use that leg a little, she is gonna want to scoot around... She will just need to be confined as this is best for her... Jaime, I am going to go get one of the front back packs as you suggested... I can see how that would have helped tremendously... Thanks!! I know we have a road ahead, but I have learned so much by chatting with you all and reading other threads... Thanks friends... |

| Thanks... I noticed tonight that she seems a little bit more uncomfortable as her leg is mobile again and I am sure that it hurts her. I really am keeping her close.. Did you put Alex in a small kennel? How much room should we give them during this recovery time... I have a pen that we shaped in a rectangular size that has her bed, water/food dish & a wee-wee pad in it. This is where Jazz is when we are gone from the house on a normal day. This has worked great for her, she got trained really quick and she can't get into anything... She is only 10 months old, so when she is a little older and not so mischevious, we will be more lenient with her freedom... Im just fearful that this is too much room for her as she can get excited and run back and forth - you know how they do... Just curious your thoughts.... |

| When Sophie had the surgery she slep a lot. I did not confine her, she knew what she could do. We also have a 6 month old yorkie name winston and he would want to play but he figure out soon that sophie did not want to, so they gave each other a lot of kisses and winston would sleep with sophie. Winston even adjusted and realized that things will be different for awhile. Is Jazz on any pain meds? Sophie was on it for two weeks. She was suppose to be on it for only a week if needed but then I notice when she was peeing it had some blood in it. The doctor said it was not a urine infection but said that the pain meds were a anti-imflamatory med also and that it was good to keep her on it to help the body heal. Another thing I wanted to mention was that I thought sophie was licking her stitches but the doctor said it was ok for her to lick around it. And sure enough that was what she was doing. She always left her stitches alone. Sherry
