| Hi Sherry, Thanks for the note.. Jazz is on Metacam once a day for pain/anti-inflammatory. I know when I have had other procedures/surgeries with my my other yorkies in the past, they too slept and rested alot... I agree with you that they quickly learn there limits... My concern with Jasmine is since her surgery was on her leg, that she will somehow do further injure it before we have a chance to get it healed 100%... I have just read so many stories about LP surgeries that have failed due to too much activity and use of the leg early on... Example... last night ( the first night off with her soft cast) I put her in her pen for a few minutes to get something. When I came back in the room she was standing on her back legs up on her cage.... I know that has to be painful for her and also NOT good at this point!! She had ligaments tightened & loosened, the groove deepened in her bones for her knee cap to stay in place & 2 pins put in her leg... She has to need some down time.... I just dont want to make a mistake on her recovery... she is 10 months, weighs right at 3lbs and is a very happy girl, so trying to keep her down/low key is a challenge... I hope your Sophie & Winston are doing great!!! |

| Hi Chel, That would concern me too. Sophie never put her leg down for a good week to week and a half. At first the vet told me it was ok for me to not give her the pain meds because it would let sophie feel good and want to do to much, which is why we stopped giving it to her. She did not show any signs of being in pain so we stopped. The vet did stress that she needed to lay low and I feel she did do that. If I saw she wanted to get up and wanted to play I had chew toys around and I would give her one and she would lay and chew on a bone or bully stick. It would keep her busy and before you knew it she would be sleeping again. But I keep the chew toys for those times only. Good luck and before you know it she will be all healed and happy. Sherry

| Well I went out and bought a small cage for my little monster... I really am amazed that she is trying to use her leg as much as she is when she is standing... But, I'll see her use it, then she abruptly sits down on her bum and has a look of pain on her face... I hope that this a normal reaction, I have never dealt with LP surgery or recovery, what to look for and how they act when in pain... I too am keeping the pain med's at a minimum so that the pain is not masked and she thinks she can do more than she should... The cage is a good size for her she has plenty of room to move around, stretch out and lay down but she is not able stand up on those back legs... like I saw her to earlier, or try to run back and forth.... ![]() Thanks all... chat with you later... |

| I think the pen should be fine. I know with Alex we would let him move about in our living room and would not let him out of our sight. At night, we would crate him. His crate is large enough for him to turn around in but not so tall that he could stand on his two rear legs. Alex is a jumper and he likes to jump on the couch or in our bed at night. The entire pupose of us crating him was to prevent all of the jumping that he would try to do. I think you will fine as long as you keep an eye on her and restrict activity for a few weeks (no running, jumping, rough playing, stairs, etc) |

| Oh I am so glad I came across this post! I hope everything is going well with your pup and that everything's healing nicely and quickly. I have an appointment with an ortho surgeon for my baby's LP and I'm so nervous. She's only 4 lbs and 10 months old, I had no idea they could develop this condition that young. Please let me know what you're doing to keep your pup calm after the surgery as my Lea's favorite things to do include running around in really fast circles and jumping up on the couch and my bed yikes!

| She sounds like my little Alex, a big ball of energy. After she has the surgery she will not feel much like running for a few days anyway. Alex laid around for a day or two and then started walking one day and then running the next, but you must really discourage it. I would put him in his crate at night when I slept and would let him out during the day as long as I was in the same room and could keep an eye on him. In other words, just keep a closer eye on her than you normally would for about 8 weeks. No rough playing, running, jumping, etc. After a couple of weeks she may seem totally fine BUT she will still be healing. Don't let that fact deceive you. Also, don't forget to shower her with lots of love and affection. Good Luck!! :-) |

| Sherry, Did Sophie ever seem to "take a step backward"... I dont mean litterly, but in her recovery... Jaz has really been doing remarkably well. I have been with her since she has been home keeping her quiet, and confined. Sometimes in her crate, on my lap, or on a very short lease by my desk where I work so she can have a small area to get around in under my watchful eye... Today she seemed to be doing fine, and then this afternoon I carried her downstairs cause her daddy was home... I put her down his chest on the floor and they were cuddling. I went into the kitchen and when I came back she seemed to really be favoring her leg. I asked Andy if she did something, he said no... All evening she is not using her leg.... uuuuuggghhhh!!! I hope she has not done something to it. I have been so upset all evening. I just laid on the floor with her this evening to rest. Maybe its just sore tonight???? I hope... I am just at a loss to what it could be. I did call my vet and told them what was going on. I am going to bring her in to see them in the morning, just to check.... She was doing SO good and I have been so attentive and careful to keep her low key... Please say a prayer that it is nothing serious... I just curious if anyone else had this type of thing happen. |

| Sophie did have times were she did not want to use her leg at all. I worried at first but then thought the same thing maybe it is tired or sore. Or she would wake up some mornings and not want to use it but as the day would go on she would start to use it again. I would continue to do what you are doing and watch it. I did ask the vet about sophie and he did say that that is ok for her, but it was also a check up so the vet did check her leg.
