| Help--both dogs are coughing again Last Thursday I brought home a 9 month old Biewer to join my 10 yr old and 14 yr old Yorkies. I quickly discovered she had kennel cough and the very next day my 10 yr old Yorkie started coughing. All of my animals are vaccinated against bordatella (which I know is not full proof) and the vet said there was no way my 10 yr old could develop it in less than 24 hours. Nevertheless, both dogs received a prescription for amoxicillin/clavulanate and cough medicine. We are day 6 into treatment and this morning BOTH dogs are coughing a lot again. For the past few days the coughing had decreased considerably. Why would the coughing suddenly increase after 6 days??? Both dogs are eating/drinking/peeing/pooping/playing fine. I am calling my vet this morning but I am wondering if any of you can also offer advice?

| There are many strains of kennel cough. Also, there are other upper respiratory conditions that are not kennel cough. No idea why symptoms would increase suddenly after improving. Best left for your vet to answer. Sometimes it takes time for these things to clear up. Maybe a different antibiotic should be given....I would probably ask the vet if he/she thinks a culture and sensitivity might be in order.

| Kennel cough is a blanket name given to a "million" viral infections and quite a few bacterial as well. All cause some form of coughing and or congestion. If your dogs contracted a viral cough you'll just have to wait it out. And depending on the dog ability to fight of the virus it may take a long time with older dogs. Their immune systems probably aren't what they used to be. The antibiotic is given in case the infection is bacterial and also to prevent secondary infection from the cough. I'd work with your vet on the antibiotics but your dogs may cough for quite a while. The kennel cough nasal vaccine gives immunity for only about 6 months. I think it's a worthless vaccine and it'll actually give puppies kennel cough. |

Oh yeah...I was half dead when I posted. You are right..it is viral! Antibiotics will not cure it...DUH. But they often end up with bacterial infections thus an antibiotic. I would still be concerned that the cough has gotten worse. Did they do a cbc? That would indicate if there is a viral or bacterial infection going on.

| Vet says Maggie definitely has kennel cough (the blanket term). She still believes the coughing last week has to be explained by something else. Snickers has been home for 6 days and this is when Maggie would come down with it. So she is having me finish the Augmentin and start doxycycline for 10 days. Even though Maggie is 10 she feels she will get over this just fine. I also had the Senior blood panel done on Maggie while we were there. She has dropped from 5.8 lbs to 5 lbs since last October. Thanks for everybody's help. I guess I just have to wait it out until everybody gets rid of this virus and pray nobody has a secondary bacterial infection.

| My 13 year old ended up developing pneumonia... be very careful and act quickly when you see changes that are not for the better... Hope you see improvement on the Doxy...

| I, also, brought home a new puppy with kennel cough. My older dog never contracted it though - so I was lucky there. But..... the kennel cough on the new puppy lasted for a little over a month. He's fine now - and really nothing more than just the coughing. I never gave him anything. The vet suggested giving him cough medicine, but I chose not to because he was on other medicines for giardia and he is so little and just wanted some normalcy for this puppy. The older dogs you really have to watch - that can be dangerous. |

Snickers, my pup, coughs only occasionally and it is always when she gets excited. She is finished with Augmentin. All in all everybody is improving! Thanks for you concern!

Your poor baby. Giardia is even worse from what I hear. That is a lot to go thru for a little one (and the little one's owner!)
