Kennel cough is a blanket name given to a "million" viral infections and quite a few bacterial as well. All cause some form of coughing and or congestion. If your dogs contracted a viral cough you'll just have to wait it out. And depending on the dog ability to fight of the virus it may take a long time with older dogs. Their immune systems probably aren't what they used to be. The antibiotic is given in case the infection is bacterial and also to prevent secondary infection from the cough. I'd work with your vet on the antibiotics but your dogs may cough for quite a while. The kennel cough nasal vaccine gives immunity for only about 6 months. I think it's a worthless vaccine and it'll actually give puppies kennel cough.
