I am so very sorry for your loss - I cannot imagine the shock you must have been in when they called. I hope Shelby (love that name!) is doing ok and that you find a new sibling for her soon. Bless your heart....

Thank you everyone. I couldn't imagine the outpouring of sympathy from so many strangers.

I know I was doing the right thing and my head tells me so, but my heart tells me different. I handed her over to them when she didn't want to go. The look on her little face was "how could you?", but I did.

I know most people would think I'm nuts, but I lost a son in an accident when he was 16 and this hurts just as bad. Maybe even more, because I feel so much like it was my fault.

ohhh, I just feel so bad for you. I wish there were words to send you that could help you feel better. It will take time, like everything. But here on Yorkie Talk, when one of us are hurting, we really do feel the pain too. Sending lots of love, and prayers to you and your family.

I am so sorry for your loss. My little guy had bad teeth and I was affraid to put him under due to heart problems. He developed Kidney failure most likely from the bacteria from the bad teeth and I lost him in September. I felt guilty too thinking I should have had his teeth cleaned. We try to do what is best for them. Don't blame yourself. My thoughts are with you.

I have a 7 yr old yorkie now and several years ago I lost a toy poodle to similar situation, he was taken to the vet to have a lump removed and never woke up. I am so sorry, take time to grief, cry, and scream. It doesn't seem now like things will get better, but over time focus on the good times that you had with your baby. You may want to think about getting another puppy when you are ready to help your other little yorkie get through this. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Do you have the blood panels done prior to any procedure that will require anesthesia? What kind of anesthetic does your vet use? They should be using either isoflurene or Sevoflurene on toy dogs, that is the safest that is available. Also, when I have a dental done, and any teeth are removed, I now insist on getting antibiotics before I leave the vet's. I already had one of my dogs end up with such a fierce infection from just a minor tooth being removed, that he almost lost an eye and ended up being treated for almost a year after the dental before he was completely cleared of infection. He still gets ulcers on that eye very easy now, and I always have the antibiotic for the eye on hand. Since then, even if the vet feels that there should not be a problem, I insist on getting the antibiotics.

I am so sorry to hear about the death of your baby. You did nothing wrong nor, do I suspect, did the vet.
This brought back sad memories! A few years ago, I took a perfectly healthy, active and lively 10 month old girl for dental and spaying. She had a full blood panel and should have been fine but, that was not to be. She died as soon as the anesthesia was stopped and oxygen started. Surgery had been done and she appeared fine.
The one thing I keep remembering is that she died peacefully and in no pain. I hope you find comfort in knowing how much she loved you and what a good life you gave her.

She had been on antibiotics for a week before and was to be on antibiotics for a week after. She had a physical the week before and was fine. Neither of those were the anesthetic they gave her and I don't have the paper right in front of me to see just what it was. I really feel it was something they did, but would never have a way to prove it.

The reason I think they did something wrong was that when a friend of mine took her little chihuahua in there two days later for a health certificate to travel, they told her she had to have a dental on her dog before they would give her a certificate. She said no because of what happened to Ruby. They told her that Ruby had other health problems that caused it. When my friend told them that she knew better and that she knew Ruby was a healthy dog, they backed down and went ahead and gave the health certificate. If they hadn't done something wrong, I would think they would have stuck to their guns.

If she had other health issues, I would think the physical would have shown it and they never told me there was a problem not even after she died. They told me she had a bad reaction to the anesthetic.

I would switch vets if i were you after what this says as you have to trust your gut feeling

I just pm'd you as i am so nervous as my maltese has her dental on thursday -- i am going to board certified dentist because of my fear of this so hoping all will go well but I do not have a choice as she has periodontal disease and needs some teeth that are loose removed because i was so fearful to put her under and now she has a bun of 28 and bun creatinine ratio of 31 and +30 protein in urine due to her horrible teeth. It is a catch 22 as with small breeds you have to do the dentals as they can get gum disease which leads to kidney, liver and heart disease. All we can do is do our best and that is what you did as if you did not do dental she would have became sicker over time and possibly been in more pain going that way. I have been reading everything on dentals lately for fear of demi's and this is what i have found -- best to not feed soft food in small breeds, brush twice if not once daily, dentals yearly and at latest 2 years, pre-anesthetic propofol is safest as ket/val should not be given to dogs having any seizure activity, isoflurine is best for toy breeds but sevo is safe as well but for some reason iso is best for the toy breeds, always make sure they use catheterization and iv fluids in case something goes wrong-- so all we can do is try our best but they have to be done as now because of my fear of this my demi has periodontal disease which is irreverseable and her teeth are loose so i feel horrible not doing the proper maintenance and now she has health issues

you did the right thing as you loved her and put her in the best hands you knew - please find peace in you did what was best for her as non-anesthetic dentals i am finding do not get below the gum line and very hard to get a good cleaning as dogs teeth are 1 to 1 - 1 part above and 1 part below the gum line so to get below gum line you have to put them under to get the best cleaning and the bacteria below the gum line is the bacteria that causes the most problem as that is the stuff that gets into the blood stream and leads to other diseases. It also leads to gum disease and bone loss and loss of teeth.

If your baby has bad breath then get them in asap as bad breath can be gum disease and kidney disease as i made the mistake of thinking it was a digestive issue of which it was not in my demi's case - it is gum disease for her and now her kidney values are affected so i believe i caught it in time but now we need to do more aggressive home care with gum disease as it is not reverseable

I took Lucy to the vet on Thursday and sure enough they said she needs to have her teeth cleaned (she is 10) and needs to get a lump removed. That was the day I read your post and am scared to put her under. Like I said before I never got Bo's teeth cleaned and he died of kidney failure. I want to do the right thing for Lucy now. I miss my little guy everyday as I know you miss yours. They are with us always and forever.

Girlie, I am just seeing this now.. I am so sorry to hear that this happened to you. It is so heartwrenching when this kind of thing happens to us..I do want to say that I too lost a 5 year old by a vet. He was in getting his shots.. and the vet administered to him a shot he had an alergic reaction to the year before.. this time it was fatal.. Had just finished telling me at that appointment how good his teeth was for 5 years old as he had not had a cleaning.. I was screaming and crying in the vets office and did not get as much as I am sorry. The vet paid for his creamation. I suffered for months with out the best buddie I had ever had in my life.. I still think of him all the time.. especiallay the month of November.
I did move on to new loves in my life and I love them dearly. I know without them I would not have been able to keep going.. They have kept me busy loving them and it has helped me tremendously...
If you ever need to talk.. I know what is it is like.. I have lost not only one yorkie at 5 years old, but two..
When my kacee had to have his teeth cleaned awhile ago.. I was so scared I just sat waiting for my phone to ring.. I was so afraid of losing yet another 5 year old.. Please do not feel quilty, although it is always easier said then done..

My heart goes out to you. You were being pro-active and getting her cared for. My mother has a toy poodle -adopted last month- that had all but two of his teeth removed due to extreme infection. Upon taking him to the vet upon adoption she was informed he needed the rest removed, he had been suffering with infection for months. Monday was his surgery, he did fine, but the worry was just terrible. You did nothing wrong and could not of foreseen this, don't beat yourself up.

I cant imagine how any words can truly make you feel OK, they are our friends, most times such a better companion than any human. Cherish your memories-I am positive he is at peace and will always be with you in spirit forever.

I adopted a rescue Oct 17th. He has un-descended testicles and they require he be neutered by Nov 30th. I am terrified! He is one year old and very healthy, but the risks seem so high with the toy breeds, and from what I have researched the un-descended testicles can be an invasive surgery. I am feeling so very guilty. He was pretty thin when I got him home. He has put on alomost one pound since then. He is making the transistion just fantastic, but now I have to put him through another traumatic event just as he is feeling comfortable and at peace-and I am very worried for him.
