Yeah, my sis's xh used to do that on occasion, but then again, he is an @ss. He'd write "tip" on a folded napkin, then on the inside write why they were such a bad waiter. If it ever got that bad for me, I'd think I'd just talk with the manager directly.

I leave a note and tell them why I left a bad tip. I also tell them I understand everyone has bad days and that next time we come in, we'll request them and if service is better, we will tip accordingly and the tip from this meal that they should have got.

Gotta say that you are brave for requesting them again. Watched too much "Busted on the Job" tv shows I guess.

Question:

What do you do if you get carryout from a restuarant? I just did that tonight. When I got the reciept, they left the tip portion blank. When I have been on the opposite end I think that I left it blank sometimes and sometimes I just filled in the total amount so they wouldn't feel obligated to tip.

I wound up leaving a couple of dollars as it does bring their individual rings up that they have to pay taxes on a portion of.

What would you do? Just curious.

I wonder this as well. I get take out 99% of the time. I also pay cash 100% of the time, so there is no credit card slip with the tip line. I don't tip, unless it is a place I frequent, and they know me as a regular. And I only tip if they remember me, and if they get my order right most of the time. I tend to tip more at mom and pop joints, and do not ever tip at "hotspots" in downtown for takeout.

One place in particular, I posted in the "what did you just eat thread"; Roscoe's the pastrami place. Their pastrami is TOO DIE FOR, their service is lacking to say the least. Cute 20 something girls mad they have to work the "morning shift" ie 11am onward. They talk to each other and make jokes with each other while I am on the phone with them trying to order. Are they making fun of me? Are they in the middle of a conversation too funny to get back into "work mode"? Either way, I found it very unprofessional at an establishment that is def NOT mom and pop. Not acceptable. No tip. Then when they hand over the bag, and no cash for them, I get the "look".

On the other hand, years ago, when we had more money, we got take out at Claim Jumper or Lucille's a lot. I tipped the person who went to the kitchen and got my order, usually about $2 bucks, and they were always very accommodating and when I tipped them, they said "thank you very much". Not just grab and go, you know? Seems like they don't get tipped often and was very appreciated when they did.

That said, both me and bf have been tipped a penny. They didn't realize they were being @sses either. Like my mom's "keep the change" story.

Wow that was a long post.

Before my daughter turned 18, she was a hostess/to go cashier and made minimum wage. I don't tip them for going to the back and getting my order- I also don't tip the sonic girl for bringing the bag and drinks to the car. Same concept to me. They didn't wait on me IE get my drink, refill it, appetizer, meal, clean off dirty plates, etc. They walked to the back, grabbed a bag someone else prepared and handed it to me.

The first time we ordered take out at The Gondolier close to our house, I was supprised to see a tip jar on the counter. I had called the order in and drove to pick it up myself. Besides dishing the food out and putting in cartons and bag, what did they do for a tip?
I hate the whole tipping system. We do tip when we eat out, get haircuts, etc but I really do not think a person should be expected to tip for someone doing what they were hired to do. If you work customer service, it is part of your JOB to be nice to customer and to make them as satisfied as possible.

We once order chinese food to be delivered. Not only did the guy park in our yard instead of the lane we lived on (dead end, no busy traffic at that time of night) but it took a good while to get our food. When dh gave him the money and a small tip, he asked if that was all he was tipping. Not sure if dh gave more or not.

Funny story about tipping:

Once when I was 10-13 years old, my dad ordered pizza for us. As usual, my dad had already worked a 12 hour day and he was beat, so my big bro and I went outside to pay and get the pizza. Usually, my dad gave us money to give the delivery guy a tip. On this particular day, I guess he was too tired and didn't really notice how much he gave us. I think there might have been less than a dollar for tip. Anyway, my brother and I went outside the apt building. I got the pizzas, my brother paid. As we were walking away, I heard the guy muttering, "I hate my life." My older brother wasn't paying attention, and replied, "your welcome."

Poor delivery guy! He was probably having a horrible day, and a 13 year old kid added insult to injury. I tease my brother about it to this day.

I tip well when it comes to delivery people, waitstaff, hairdressers, valets, and that sort of service. But a tip jar at a KFC or the ice cream place? That is ridiculous. Starbucks bothers me too, but I have thrown a little loose change in their jar.

When I pick up carry out food at a restaurant, I often tip a dollar or two for the person who processed the order. I pay by bank card, which requires filling in the tip line and totaling the bill, so pressure also plays into it.

OMG that is so sad and so funny! My older sis used to always make me and my little bro get the door when they delivered the pizza, bc they "wouldn't get mad at a kid for not tipping". I used to tip bad for delivery drivers. Then bf told me he used to deliver pizzas. Not only is the hourly wage terrible, you have to pay for your own gas, insurance, all the car stuff, plus the delivery fee they pizza joint tags on is for the owner, not the driver! So factor in the price of gas, they really only get about 50 cents per delivery, so if you don't tip them, they really are losing money. If you don't want to tip your delivery driver, then get in your car and drive the one mile to pickup your pizza yourself!

I agree to some of the points. The to go person didn't do anything but grab the bag, but if it's a place i frequent and they remember me and to double check my order for my extra this, and no that, then I tip on occasion. I am going to guess that the cooks makes more money, that's why they don't get tips?

But the chinese food delivery guy, omg!

Do I think fast food joints should have tip jars? I'll let this baby answer for me.

I HATE tipping the valets! I don't trust them at ALL! We once had a highly modified sports car and I absolutely hated places that were valet only. Imagine, a young guy, gets handed over the keys to powerful sports car, what do you think they are going to do? Heck, even I would. So I know they would. I hate waiting for the car to get back too. If you take 20 mins to get my car from the garage I am not tipping you.

Now on occasion, the valet would keep the car close, so we did not have to wait for ever to get the car back, then yes we would tip.

Question...do the tip jars mean that the staff at the place they have them at are getting paid less than min wage? When I worked at a grocery store I was making min wage and was a "bagger" and would therefore assist people in taking groceries to their car. I had to sign a form stating I would not accept any tips of any kind because I was making min wage. I offended a lot of people when I told them I couldn't take their money. When I'm at the counter and see a tip jar, it just makes me wonder so I'll throw whatever loose change I get back from paying cash in there...just in case.

I don't think so. I think many mom and pop, or non-corporate places will put jars out to try to get some "extra". Usually if a waiter makes less than min wage, its at a restaurant, and I think the keep their own tips, so a jar is not out in the open.

However, one of bf's friends works at a casino, and they pool their tips, which I think sucks. No matter how hard or not you work, all the tips get split evenly. I think they do this at bars too.
