How do you feel about tip jars?

I never understood pooling the tips. I tip based on the service and for that particular person, not for the other guys.

Pooling the tips doesn't make any sense, that means that the bad waiter with the bad attitude that takes 30 mins to bring me a refill gets the same tip as the hard working ones? I call BS! how are they able to do that?

I worked as a car hop when I was a teenager, and the owner found that some girls would ignore some customers and go for large tippers. We had a guy who tipped 25 cents!!!!! for a cup of coffee and one of the girls would jump over everyone to get to him. Other people would tip a nickel for a whole meal, (this is the early 60's lots of inflation since then.) and you had to work a lot harder to bring out a whole meal. So the manager thought pooling them was fairer. I think I preferred not pooling them because I'm sure this girl just pocketed her tips and then shared mine.

The coffee was 10 cents, so yes, 25 cents was a great tip! I sound like I lived in pioneer days.
