| Angry This is totally off topic..... I live in the country -- we have a horse farm and raise miniature horses and quarter horses..... Neighbors are fairly widely spread out. Most of the neighbors have dogs who ROAM...... We do have leash laws, but that is beside the point.... folks in the country feel like they live in the country so that their dogs can have freedom. Ok so, we don't have a "dog fence - yet - that is our project for next week, a chain link fence around the front yard. The Yorkies are NEVER EVER allowed outside until and unless we have made a thorough check of the yard and pasture for dogs, hawks, etc. But back to my anger..... this morning a pack of dogs (not wild dogs, but domestic pets) chased one of our beloved wild deer down and by the screams from the deer, I am guessing that they tore it to pieces. The whole episode took less than five minutes, and by the time I saw the deer run into the neighbors feild and then the dogs and then the screams -- it was too late for me to intervene. I am almost afraid to let my baby horses out of the barn. thank you, dear friends for listening..... |

| How awful! Even though it was a pack of pet dogs, it might as well be wild dogs now. I've heard that once they start that "pack mentality" and kill animals, you can't be so sure of them anymore. We live in the country too and have some dogs that roam but fortunately none that come close to our house. Do you know whose dogs they were to try and talk to them?

| If you know the dogs' owners, it might be a good idea to let them know what is going on, unless they are the defensive type.. I'd be on he phone to the police and animal control every single day until the problem was resolved- you can do those things anonymously. Take pictures and show them if you have to. We had a problem over here in my neighborhood last year, this family had a Pit Bull that kept getting loose and wandering the neighborhood, like 5 times a day. The dog would constanly be in my yard marking his territory, and I would have to constantly be on the lookout for this dog if my kids were playing outside. Pit Bulls scare the heck out of me- It got so bad, and I got so mad, that finally I called the police 3 times, and animal control every single time I saw that dog (sometimes numerous times a day) until they actually DID something about it. A while later, there was an article in our Neighborhood association newsletter, reminding people of the leash laws around here. I don't think those people kept that dog. I haven't seen him since.

| One neighbor had a rotty who nipped my son on the bottom while he was riding by on his bicycle. I called the authorities because my son has a congenital heart defect and I wasn't sure if the dog had his vaccinations... that dog disappeared only to be replaced by a worse dog who chased me and my miniature horse when we drove by in a buggy. I complained, and that dog disappeared.... only to be replaced by another....... The road that we live on ive on makes a huge U from the main road. In both directions there are dogs that roam. The animal control will only take action if a bite has occurred or if you have the dog penned up. |

| Oh my gosh! I didn't know that dogs did that! I would call the sheriff and tell him the story and see what can be done. I am so sorry that this has happened. As a yorkie lover, I can only imagine how horrible that must have been. Prayers going to you! |

| this happened in our area about 10 years ago. A farmer moved away quickly & left all his animals behind to fend for themselves. The cats came down to my grandparents farm where they were taken care of. However, the dogs took off & formed a wild pack that lived in the woods. They soon began attacking the sheep in the area. It was a very scary time in which kids & pets weren't allowed out after dark. The farmers got together & formed a posse & took care of the pack of dogs. It was very sad that the dogs had to go through that, but there was nothing else to be done.

| We too used to raise MInis and those little ones can be soo tiny we had a colt that was 15 inches high at birth one year. We live right by the State Park and have alot of coyotes and neighbors dogs that run loose and do what they want. We had an attack on one of them called our local sheriff and he told us if they are on our property shoot them, the neighbors dogs and the coyotes. We called the neigbors told them to keep their animals in their own yard or there may be problems. We did end up shooting one coyote.who went after the horse? the dogs or coyotes we will never know. We never had an attack on the minis again so we were assuming it was coyotes. We do have to take out the pellet gun and pop the neighbors german shepard every now and then who likes to come and harass our yorkies, one pop and he is gone but he forgets and comes back after a few weeks, If your neigbors dogs are on your property then you should be able to do something about it call your local sheriff and see what rights you have as a property owner.Us who are in the country can do alot more than locals and town people. How many colts did you have this year? |

This year we had four mini babies and one quarterhorse baby. Here is a pic of Starbucks.... he is the smallest and sweetest foal ever born on the farm. He was slightly over 15" when he was born and weighed right at 12 lbs. | |

| Your mini horse is so cutie!!!! I have also wanted one, but I kind of live in subburbs, and I don't think they would allow me to have one. I am so sorry you have problems with you neighbor's dogs. It sounds like the dogs are becoming dangerous. |

| I hope putting up the chain link fence will give you some level of comfort. A pack of dogs (even domestic) should be worrisome. I have always heard that once they attack and kill an animal, this will continue to be their instinct. It is a shame that you may have to potentially shoot another dog to save the life of one of yours, but dometicated animals should not be allowed to roam free. Not just for others' protection, but for the care and protection of that animal as well. Some people will just never get it!

| Very nice marked colt and tiny too.I always loved going out to the barn in the am and seeing those tiny babies. We always seemed to miss them being born got to see a few but they like to hold off till you go back in the house.LOL We mostly had black and white paints. We had a tri stud who was 26 inches nice little man,he was homogizus (sp) only threw color, was always anxious to see what markings we would get every year. Do you have them for a hobby or do you show? I would be afraid of letting them out also. And like the other post when they get a taste for blood and the chase they will return again and again. Good luck to you. |

| is there a certain time of day where those dogs are always around? write a letter and complain CALL ANIMAL CONTROL or someone else and report them and report that they are on your property you SHOULD NOT have to put up with that NO ONE should be so careless with their dogs. dogs are DOMESTIC animals, "free" psh. a happy dog is one with owners who care about it and who are the "pack leaders" not ones who let it run wild. |

| Just read your post on the "pack dogs" and coyotes. Just over 4 years ago we rescued 2 mini mares from a farm and we were blessed with a baby colt that just looks like yours. Then 2 years ago my Friesian mare gave us a colt on July 10th at 11:45pm, and we had the honor of seeing him born. We have a problem with coyotes, they are so bold as to come up to the end of the paddock, we do use the pellet gun on them, lately we have a neighbors pit bull coming around. The animal control officer has said we can protect our livestock if we feel they are being threatened. I have not fired at the dog as yet, however if the day comes that my mare or my little yorkies are threatened then yes I will do that. My little furbabies are kept on our deck and rarely come off it. I have a portion of the deck dedicated to them, they have their little poopy box, umbrella and rugs. Anytime a dog becomes part of the "pack" it is never the same, once they get the thrill of the kill and the taste of blood its over.. I hope you can get this resolve with your local control officer. keep us posted.. Majam - 07/10/04 - 04/07/06 |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Where we used to live, we had a problem with people dumping unwanted dogs on our road (this could be a whole new thread). It was so sad, most ended up being hit by cars. At times though a few would form a pack, and generally our neighbor would shoot them. It is horrible that people will get a pet and then just toss them out of car, never to be thought of again. This brings back some sad memories of living out there. How can people be so cruel, I've never understood?
