How awful! Even though it was a pack of pet dogs, it might as well be wild dogs now. I've heard that once they start that "pack mentality" and kill animals, you can't be so sure of them anymore.
We live in the country too and have some dogs that roam but fortunately none that come close to our house. Do you know whose dogs they were to try and talk to them?
