What is faux stained glass? How do you make it?

I have been looking for a stained glass piece to hang in front of the lower half of my bathroom window. My one & only bathroom is a small interior room, so I don't like to block the window with blinds or drapes, but would like a little privacy, as it over-looks my back patio.

But faux stained glass is basically a special type of translucent paint you paint onto glass. Like real stained glass, you do the black lines first (called the leading, or leaded line). It looks similar to puffy paint. After the leading dries you color it in.

If you can trace, you can do this. There are lots of more geometric designs that you can do if you don't want to do a picture. One minus is the color dries very light, and for the most part, I went over the peacock three times. If the paint dried darker it would have taken me three days (incl the drying time) instead of a week.

If you want to do a more geo pattern, you can get the leading that come in strips like this. Amazon
Then fill in the blank parts with clear and it will make a wavy look when dry.
The best part is if you don't like it you can peel it off.

I taped a picture of the peacock behind my glass. Hopefully you can get to behind your window so you can tape a design in the back. If not, then freehand a more simple one. I'd love to see what you come up with if you do it.

Oh another thing I remembered is Home Depot sells window cling that looks like stained glass. Search Results for*stained glass film*at The Home Depot

We bought some and put it in our bathroom window also. It was so easy to install and looks great. Let's in light but still you get a lot of privacy. It's more expensive than the faux stained glass, but goes up way faster. I mean it took less than 5 mins.

I have some herbs in a windowsill, but this would look so much better. Also was thinking it could work if the house was right, for a place to drop keys or dog leashes by the door.

Beautiful! You are so talented. Is your hand still numb from the work? LOL

My neighbor used the Home Depot faux stained glass thingy for a transom above her back door that faces west. Helped filter the blinding afternoon light beautifully.

My hand is ok now. I'm painting some Nerf guns now to make them steampunk to try and sell. I got 2 large Mavericks from a thrift shop for $3 each and some smaller ones from Toys R Us on sale for $7 each. I'll post pics once I'm done. But I'm not that great at painting and it cramps up my hands also.

It's hard to see in the pics, but they're already on little rectangular trellises (see picture below, this is from the back), which is holding everything in place. My plan is to keep them trimmed so I can keep them there at the entrance like that, but we'll see how they go. I can always put them in the ground if they get to be too much. They're even prettier in person!

Industrial style fans....looksie what I bought this weekend for $50! Lockers! Woot! Think I'll use these in my painting studio, they'd be perfect for that. Today I'm going to sand off any rust and see if I can remove the writing somehow too. I can't decide whether I want to leave them natural and beat up and gray...or...should I paint them...conflicted over this 1st world problem.

Think I might be done, or close to it, with the lockers. I primed them, then painted the doors w/ chalkboard paint, then I "burnished" some of the gray areas w/ antiquing glaze to dirty the gray up a bit...so it didn't look so flat.

I couldn't decide whether to leave the black paint alone or add a bit of chalk accent....which do you like?

I'll put the before pic, then the painted version, then w/ some chalk on the black...
