| Some advice is greatly needed!!!! We just bought a little boy. He is 11 weeks and we just LOVE him. He has been doing really well with our little girl but I have some major concerns. When we picked him up he had HUGE mats all over his coat. He didn't smell very well and he was just a mess. We brought him home, gave him a bath and after an hour of work he was finally clean and mat free. We trimmed his bum, face and ears and he looks tons better. But since we have brought him home he is really scared to get picked up. When you do pick him up he wont look at you and is stiff as can be. He looks so sad and when you go to put him down he flexes all his muscles like you are going to drop him. You can feel his spine and ribs and he is just really scared. Is this normal for a puppy that is that old to come into a new home or do you think something happen to the little guy? How do I make him not at like this and get his coat shinny and healthy again? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

| What a horrible way to send a new puppy home - He should have been washed - combed with a pretty blue bow - Sounds like he did not have a great time where he was previously - We got Baxter at about 12 wks - He was fine - I'm sure if you give him some time - He'll be fine. Just needs adjusting. |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | that poor baby - it sounds like he's had no love and doesn't know how to react to your touch - no puppy should smell and have matts like that and shame on whoever let him get in that condition - some people don't deserve the love of dogs - Good luck with him...I'd take it one day at a time until he settles in and realizes his new good life is for real - and as far as his coat - I'd just use Puppy Tearless shampoo on him and maybe a little Johnsons Spray called No more Tangles and just give it time.

| I use Minksheen, it makes Aubreys coat look great. He might be scared thats why he might do that. I would just take it easy, just let him know that everything is ok. Maybe for a while once you pick him up, give him a treat or something. Good luck, let us know how it goes. |

| Congratulations on your new puppy! To get my Tobi's fur nice and shiny, I put salmon oil in his food. This particular salmon oil I use is meant for pets, so check out your local pet stores. As far as the holding your pup goes, I'm sure he's just a little shy and nervous...he'll warm up to you in no time

| puppy The way a puppy comes from a breeder tells me all about the breeder without words...I don't care who they are, big name or a nobody... There is a big difference in a pup who has perhaps gotten sick in shipping and messed themselves up and a poorly cared for puppy...you can tell so easily one that has been cleaned up for selling and one who has gotten regular care. A reputable breeder does not let a puppy go out the door dirty and unbrushed, matted and in need of grooming..no excuses are excepted! If the breeder is not able to groomer their pups, then hire someone to do it...and it sounds as if he has not been well cared for in any area...take him to the vet for a check up..stool, ears etc...groom him daily, good diet lots of hugs and kisses, kind words and he will improve no doubt...it sounds like he has not bonded to humans very well..another area where the breeder dropped the ball...of course, we can all get a shy or bashful pup who needs extra time to adjust..but the ethical breeder will tell you exactly what the pups temperament is and what is needed to help him adjust as easily as possible. Best wishes to you...he is lucky to have found you and your family. |

| I am so sorry to hear about your little furbaby. Keep loving on him & see if you can find some toys he likes to play with. I would spend as much time on the floor with him as possible. As for his coat. I use The Missing Link - I take Bubba & Roxie to a holistic, acupuncture vet and buy this food supplement there. But you may be able to buy it from pet stores. Bubba was having some skin flaking problems, but I started adding this to their very high-grade human quality pet food (Flint River Ranch) and I saw a major improvement in the coat & skin of both dogs. I just googled "The Missing Link pet" and tons of links came up - testimonials, links to buy, info on the product. Give that a try Best wishes for the adjustment phase yorkiesmiles |

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | Did you pick up the puppy from the breeder's home? Did the puppy fly to you? There is no excuse for that puppy to arrive like that. Be gentle --let him see you coming. Call him by name and rward him for coming with praise and a treat. Perhaps he was crated and needs to be kept in smaller quarters and gently exposed to the rest of the home. What did the breeder say when you reported his condition and his behaviors? If you didn't call, why not? |

| congratulations on your new boy!! My shih poo, Oliver, tightens up a lot when I pick him up. He throws his arms up over my shoulder. Also, when I go to put him down, I'm always very gentle but he acts like he's scared he will just be dropped. He's now 2 and it's gotten a little better. Just be gentle and patient. I have no idea what circumstances my Oliver came from. I assume by this behavior he was roughly handled and possibly thrown around a little. I hope it gets better for you. I'm sure he'll begin to trust you more with each day.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I am glad you got him out of there. Pixie was 13 months when we got her and she would do the dame thing when we went to pick her up. First we had to catch her and she would just stiffen up. We have had her 7 months and she is finally getting better when picked up. I think some are just more skittish. Your baby is so young he will quickly settle in.

| Congrats on your new little baby Im sure he will warm up to you in no time. did you know the breeder at all? no puppy should come to you dirty and matted, being scared is normal, but he will warm up to you as soon as he realizes he is safe, best to you and looking forward to some pics

| Hmmm...sounds like the breeder didn't really take very good care of the puppy. Anyhow, I'm sure he'll eventually get used to you guys picking him up and handling him. He's in a new environment, away from his mom and litter mates, and that can be very traumatic for a little puppy. Just hold him and comfort him, and he'll do fine. My Munchkin used to hate being held, but now she jumps up and down until you pick her up and hold her.

| Who knows what they might have done to him. I think with lots of love, attention and yummy food he'll come around and trust you. It's like a skin kid. Abuse them and they expect abuse. Love them and they expect love.
