congratulations on your new boy!! My shih poo, Oliver, tightens up a lot when I pick him up. He throws his arms up over my shoulder. Also, when I go to put him down, I'm always very gentle but he acts like he's scared he will just be dropped. He's now 2 and it's gotten a little better. Just be gentle and patient. I have no idea what circumstances my Oliver came from. I assume by this behavior he was roughly handled and possibly thrown around a little. I hope it gets better for you. I'm sure he'll begin to trust you more with each day.
