| OASIS Animal Shelter After weeks of putting it off I finally decided to take a bag of dog food to our animal shelter. I have always avoiding that place. As soon as I walked in this little puppy came running up to me so of course I had to stay and play. Well as he wondered around I followed him and discovered 6 more of them!! Someone had just dropped htem off. They were soo cute (healer mix). The lady that was there was getting ready to do the paper work on them and give them shots and worming meds so I asked if I could stay and help out. Then came the hard part walking down that hall of pens seeing all those dogs begging for attention and love, it broke my heart. I helped her feed and water them and made sure to give each one a good head rub. Then I asked the question I knew I didn't want an answer to....do they have to put the animals down eventually? And I'm sure you all know what the answer was. It was heartbreaking to hear. I wish more people in my town care mored or atleast cared enought to donate money and no dog would ever have to be put down. I told her I'd be back today but when I walked out that door and saw all those dogs run the there outside pen I started balling so hard I couldn't even drive. I'm getting teary eyed just thinking about it. I know this is going to be really tuff for me but I feel like those poor dogs deserve all the attention they can get. It may make me sad when I leave but their the ones that are sad every day. I wish those dogs wouldn't have to be put to sleep and somone would come adopt them. I pick out atleast 6 I wanted. Why doesn't anyoen else??? I don't get it. Will it get easier to go to the shelter or will I cry everytime?? I can't even think about it without crying! |

| Wow - that must have been really difficult. I don't think people realize that this problem is out there. It really is a shame. Good for you for going there though - I know for some of us we think that if we don't see it then it's not a problem...

| Bless your heart for caring so much and for having the courage to go there and work even though it's so emotional for you! I couldn't do it! Maybe you can get the newspaper to do a story or find a way to generate interest in the town where you live. There are no easy answers but it's people like you who make life a little better for those poor babies!

| That's amazing that you stayed there and helped out. I'm not sure if it will get easier for you the more you go, but I think you will feel really good about being there and giving them love and attention. Sometimes the hardest things to do are those that bring the best rewards (in this case, to the doggies). Imagine how wonderful the dogs must have felt while you were there rubbing their heads and giving them kisses. It amazes me how many people don't want their puppies and doggies b/c of potty training issues or too much barking, etc. It's wonderful that you were there to provide them with love. |

| I am so impressed with you!!!!! Bless your heart, you are an angel!!!! You are doing something I can't bear to do. Which is so selfish of me because I'm only thinking of my feelings. I imagine with a heart of gold like yours it will always be hard to leave. I honestly admire you for going and helping out!!!!!!!!!!

| Shelters Just like you I have always had trouble with animal shelter visits. Until I found the ANNA shelter. I think that the 2 ladies who run this are amazing and I had to share this with all of you. I'm attaching a link to their site. Scroll down to the middle of the page where it explains their facilities. I wish that there was one of these in every city. http://www.theannashelter.com/page/page/1985823.htm |

| Also...another question ..in my quest to try and switch Maximus from eating RC to any food he would eat i.e. Innova,Wellness...I have open bags of food of each kind (I'm sticking with the Innova because he is slowly growing on it)...will shelters take them..I have only used maybe 3 cups of each and they are all NEW..will a shelter take it?... I was planning on taking it over tommorrow but is it okay..I don't want to throw it out..it's good food

| Shelters will take anything! Old newspapers, blankets, toys, food, treats - if a dog can use it they will take it. I go to yard sales and look for old blankets, most of the time if you tell the people they are for the animal shelter they will let you have them. Don't feel bad if you can't handle going to volunteer, instead help in other ways. A lot of shelters are starting out of shelter adoptions where they take the animals to social places (like Walmart or community functionx) to try to find them homes. Maybe you could start something like that or get involved that way. Or some shelters (like the one in Madison County) allow people to take some puppies and kittens to senior citizen complexes or nursing homes for visits with the elderly. Both sides benefit there. If nothing else, make donations. Not everyone can work at a shelter, like not everyone can work with the sick or elderly. DO NOT feel bad about it, find another way to help! Windy and Lida Rose |

| yes shelters will take food no matter how much or how little. i thought it was kinda strange how I kept putting off taking that food to OASIS and then the day i do someone had just dropped of 7 puppies (it was puppy food). I want to adopt a dog so bad but i can't. i still live at home and b/c of my love for animals we now have 3 dogs and a guinea pig. however my a friend's golden just passed away and they are looking for another "big" dog it would be an outside dog but they have a big fenced in back yard with a closed in porch for the dog to sleep in with heat and air. she is going to bring her little brother up to the shelter today and let him look around. if i can just help get a few of these dogs adopted i will be happy. i just don't know how i will react when one of them has to be put down, i don't know if emotionally i can handle it. i'm just not good with those type of things. i've always been the type of person to avoid places like shelter and animal cops etc b/c i didn't want to be sad. |

2450 Country Club Rd. Camden, AR 71701 Thank you so much, you are too sweet. You can also visit their website www.ARKANSASDOGS.com i'm really opening myslef up for judgemet here but oh well here goes. i had a problem with perscription pills BUT this past january i decided enough was enough and i got help and everything is ok now. yesterday after seeing the looks on the faces of those dogs i decided to start taking money that i normally would have spent on pills and put it in a jar and each month give it to OASIS. i mean why not, i struggle with temptation every day so instead of wasting that money or letting in lie around and temp me i'm gonna give in to animals that really can benefit form it. | |

| I work at our local Humane Society and it is very rare that a dog is euthanized thankfully. It is usually only done because they are too old or too ill. I enjoy my work there because I feel I am doing it for my own dogs. They would want to help if they could and they can't so I do it for them. We just opened a brand new facility last year and it is so great. We had a parade and it was fun for everyone. I just was wondering under what conditiond they put dogs down at the Oasis Shelter? I think the breed rescues make sure no adoptable dogs who are in good health are destroyed. The shelters refer to these orgsnizations when they get specific breeds in. Just curious. |

| she said that as long as there healthy and not having any problems then they won't be put down. i'm assuming if they start getting full and there is an older dog that has been there for quite a while maybe that's when they will put them down. but she was also telling me stories of dogs that they had had for years and then got adopted. i don't think there is one purebreed dog there. they're all mixes and all adult dogs except for the 7 puppies and on other dog. |
