Shelters will take anything! Old newspapers, blankets, toys, food, treats - if a dog can use it they will take it. I go to yard sales and look for old blankets, most of the time if you tell the people they are for the animal shelter they will let you have them.
Don't feel bad if you can't handle going to volunteer, instead help in other ways. A lot of shelters are starting out of shelter adoptions where they take the animals to social places (like Walmart or community functionx) to try to find them homes. Maybe you could start something like that or get involved that way. Or some shelters (like the one in Madison County) allow people to take some puppies and kittens to senior citizen complexes or nursing homes for visits with the elderly. Both sides benefit there.
If nothing else, make donations. Not everyone can work at a shelter, like not everyone can work with the sick or elderly. DO NOT feel bad about it, find another way to help!
