| Lots of puppy questions. Potty, names, play ect.. Im planning on teaching my puppy to go potty outside/on the pad. Has any1 else done this an if so, how did you do it? Also, i plan on putting the crate in the xpen, should i leave the door of the crate open at night, or closed? at 12 weeks (when my breeder ships) how long can a yorkie pup hold it? how long until after she eats should i take her out? Do the collars stay on 24/7 & the harnesses just for walking? Whats the right size crate? Id like her to be able to use it forever as just a place for her to hang out) Since ill be going to college in 2years, ill need her to not bark when the doorbell rings or some1 knocks (its campus policy that ur dog doesnt yap) how do i go about teaching her this if the other dog barks up a storm evrey time the bell rings, can i teach her or will she learn from him? How the heck do you do a topknot? im confused. How can i politely tell people that id rather not them have their germy hands on my baby? or do i just walk around with purel and make ppl use it before touching her? Petsmart or Petco training classes? Where do u get ur pet carriers? Which name do u like best.. Madison, Tiffany, Coco, Chanel, Lexi, Piper, Prada? also, any suggestions? How often do i give nutri cal? I love my vet.. but his price for spay is 500$, thats a lil excessive in my opinion, So i usually spay my pets at the human society (the one in miami is very clean, great vets ect..) Is that OK? How do i clean eye gunk? My friend loves her maltese and pretty frequently she uses spray hair glitter (non aerosol, hypo-allergetic) on her. Is that ok for a dog? i dont plan on doing that but i just want to kno. What a great healthy treat? Do u guys use flexi leads? Our cats are declawed, and they like to go up at random times and tap our dogs on the head lol they dont seem to mind and it doesnt hurt them, do u think a yorkie pup will be tramatized or something by this? Can i use puppy nail polish on my pup? has any1 tried and and proven it was safe? how do i tell her that biting is not nice? ive heard a whole bunch of ways but which one is most effective? NO HITTING! some1 once told me to smack my pup on the rear when she bit me while playing. i dont beleive in hitting dogs, especially puppies that are just teething and dont know any better. when shes older. can i bring her to the beach? I am a miami girl after all lol lol you dont have to answer all these, just take 1 or 2 thankss |

| holy man.. lol... good stuff asking all the right questions tho. i can answer a few for you a puppy should be taken out after a nap, after they play and after they eat.. about 15-20 min... take her out... use a command (we say.. hurry up) and wait... if she goes.>.. HUGE Party.. treats and praise like crazy.. if she doen'st go... bring her back in.. put her in her crate for 5-10 min and go again! we use a bell so Layla just rings it to let us know she needs to go out. Layla NEVER wears a collar (i dont want her ot get caught on anything) and her harness goes on when we go out! Layla is a :non barker: we stared from the begining saying AH AH loudly when she barked and we distracted her and it worked... if she starts up i give her a quick reminder and she stops We took PetSmart training (and are now on to advanced) only because we don't have a PetCo. i think crate training at night is ESSENTIAL to potty training.. the crate needs to be small and have very little room for her to move around in... she needs to be able to cry to tell you that she has to go out.. so don't give her space to do her buisiness inside the crate. Nutrical is only for when she hasn't had much to eat because of stress... sickness... teething is a lot like barking... with layla i'd make a loud "yelp" and then give her a toy to chew on so she knew the difference *whew!* hope that helps.. can't wait to see your new pup! |

| Ok just gonna answer some that i know lol the petco and petsmart training classes did not work well for me when i took my last dog to them. I found that they did not give me or my dog the individual time that we needed and i beleive we left there not knowing anymore then when we got there. I got the puppy training book for dummies nad found it way more effective, cheaper and you can get multiple dog use out of it. As for the dog nail polish I painted my pekenieses nails before when i had her and she did fine it didnt hurt her at all but she had her hair cut so you could actually see it so i wouldnt suggest doing it unless you were gonna trim paw hair cuz it would be a waste of time and my yorkie puppy wont sit still long enough to have me do it anyways my pekeniese was quite a bit older so she didnt care. You can get pet carriers about anywhere walmart, target, petco, any pet store, or online at pet supply stores or dog clothing stores. And as for barkking i havent mastered that yet either my puppy was quite when i first got her but has found her voice and is now quite vocal. Im not sure how you go about teaching them not to especially humanely barking collars seem so mean and i doubt they should be used on small dog breeds. And biting im not sure a yorkie really bites all that much at least not in my experience my anna chews on things sometimes but has never bit me or anyone else. |

| Sorry, I don't have the answers for you as I'm a new Yorkie owner myself, but I just wanted to say thanks for posting all of those questions! I've been wanting the answers to a lot of those myself. *Edit* By the way, Lexi is my favourite name! I wanted it for Chloe, but Chloe's daddy didn't like it at all so we settled on Chloe.

| How can i politely tell people that id rather not them have their germy hands on my baby? or do i just walk around with purel and make ppl use it before touching her? Are you nuts? LOL. I don't even know how to answer that one. Last time I checked people/humans don't give canine illnesses and vice verse. Which name do u like best.. Madison, Tiffany, Coco, Chanel, Lexi, Piper, Prada? also, any suggestions? I love Prada. How unique!!! How often do i give nutri cal? Only when I see my baby starting to get the shakes. This happens maybe once a week. Otherwise she has a very healthy appetite for a 2 pounder. The vet told me to not automatically give it to her as it can squelched her appetite. Thus, I only give it when I notice her shaking which means her blood sugar has dropped. Our cats are declawed, and they like to go up at random times and tap our dogs on the head lol they dont seem to mind and it doesnt hurt them, do u think a yorkie pup will be tramatized or something by this? I got two rescue kittens right after X-mas. Two brothers. They are now 14 weeks old and not declawed. My Bijou loves to romped around with them. They bat at her and she pile drives them. Traumatized? Not at my house. Bijou loves all the animals at my house. lol you dont have to answer all these, just take 1 or 2 thankss[/QUOTE] I answered a few with my opinons. I am sure everything will work out just perfectly with your new baby.

and i meant when people have their dogs and they want them n your dogs to "meet". especially when shes a puppy, i used to say " my dog hasnt got her shots yet and id rather her not catch anything" but people are always like "Oh that nonscense, she wont catch anything from fifi!" and i just feel like.. weird. and then they get all dramatic about being overprotective.. lol this has happened to me quite a few times, and once again with a lab, it was less likely that it would be life threatening if she caught anything.. bigger dog=easier to treat and not so easy to be harmed by another dog. | |

| I know what you mean people just run up to peoples dogs and think thats ok especially kids. I have a pomeranian and there used to be a park out by my house and i used to take him and kids where always wanting to chase him arround and pet him and he doesnt like to be chased etc and its not fair to him when he has to be a a leash and cant get away. I dont mind adults petting my dogs but i definately would not let them pick any of my dogs up without my permission first thats just not something id feel comfortable with id be afraid they would run off them them or something. I just think people should have more common sense then that then to pet someone elses dog no matter how small or nice they appear you jsut never know and you dont want to get bit even by a yorkie. so why not atleast ask if you can pet the dog first. and parents should teach their kids that as well. |

| I do have a rule that no one picks up my little dogs. Everyone wants to as they are so little. I have a Chin that weighs a little over 3 pounds. With kids I simply state that rule. No picking up. With adults I tell them that to not pick her/him up as he/she will jump out of your arms and get hurt. I try to put it on my animal as not being very smart. People can be rude and due to their little size they automatically think it's okay. Well, it's not. LOL

| many questions Hi, Go to your local bookstore and buy a book on Yorkies/puppy training, contact your local humane society for classes on training. They can be so helpful. We have one of the best humane societies in the country here in Hawaii. Good luck, happy training! |

| Love all your questions - I love it when owners have thought thru how they will raise their pups and seek answers. Barking issue - use Cesar's techniques. Read his books and watch his show on National Geographic. They work!! Taking pup to beach - I'd keep her in a puppy cut or all that long hair with sea water and sand will get damanged, tangled and a lot of work to maintain. You'll be happier and so will she. Eye boogers - I use a dampened paper towel every morning and gently place it on that area. I just hold it there for a few moment to soft the booger, then gently wipe. If I notice a buildup at night before bed i do it again. Nutra-Cal - feed your pup small meals often, keep her warm and don't hold her too much. If she isn't eating well or feels somewhat cold give her a dose of Nutra-Cal and call your vet immediately! People picking up your pup - I use a stroller when we are in a busy area. The dogs go in, I zip up the screen and people cannot touch them. They can stand there and look all day but no touch. Best of luck to you and your pup!! | I love my vet.. but his price for spay is 500$, thats a lil excessive in my opinion, So i usually spay my pets at the human society (the one in miami is very clean, great vets ect..) Is that OK? You can spay your girl wherever you think best. Our vet charged $362, but we had to tack on $150 extra for her to stay overnight at the ER vet since our vet does not have anyone to supervise overnight. Does that $500 include staying overnight with supervision? If so it's not a bad price actually. You might ask around and then make sure the vet can keep her overnight with someone there, otherwise, you can plan on being up all night with your little girl whining and being very uncomfortable. Believe me it's hard to see your baby in pain and miserable. Even with the overnight at the ER, when we picked her up, she looked really pathetic. She clung to me, layed her head on my chest and whined all the way home. We had to give her pain meds up until yesterday and now she's going bonkers because she has to keep the collar on since she managed to wriggle out of the onesies we put on her to keep her from biting her stitches. How do i clean eye gunk? There are eye wipes available at the pet store that work really well to wipe the gunk away. My friend loves her maltese and pretty frequently she uses spray hair glitter (non aerosol, hypo-allergetic) on her. Is that ok for a dog? i dont plan on doing that but i just want to kno. I don't suppose it's bad for them, altho if they have sensative skin, and many do, you might not want to or you're going to have a dog that itches non-stop. What a great healthy treat? We love the Wellness Treats and so does our furbaby. She's crazy about them but they are a little pricey, and our trainer at Petsmart said to change off now and then, so we switch and use the Petsmart treats as well as Honeynut Cheerios now and then. And sometimes we give her a little liverwurst, especially to get pills down. Do u guys use flexi leads? We use a flexi-lead to keep our puppy tied to us in the house. When she's out of her crate we keep her tied to us so she can't sneak off and poop somewhere in the house where she's not supposed to. The trainer said that was essential, and it sure helped us get the pooing and peeing thing under control. Otherwise, when we are out in the yard, we use the Flexilead so she can chase her frisbee without running off under the fence or somewhere. But as far as walking her, a flexi lead won't teach her anything about walking according to a professional trainer's book I downloaded online. Our cats are declawed, and they like to go up at random times and tap our dogs on the head lol they dont seem to mind and it doesnt hurt them, do u think a yorkie pup will be tramatized or something by this? We had a cat who is 9 years old and she is a real queen, but our little Pookie has challenged her since the moment she moved in. Yorkies are bred to corner small animals and they are gutsy little guys when it comes to chasing anything that runs. So she's not the least bit intimidated by our cat swiping at her. She chases kitty when the can comes in and nips her hind legs. Absolutely no fear. Can i use puppy nail polish on my pup? has any1 tried and and proven it was safe? Never tried this. We're having enough trouble just trying to trim her toenails, the two of us holding her, let alone trying to put nail polish on. She won't hold still long enough and Yorkies are so rambuncious that you probably will wind up with nail polish all over you and the dog. So good luck on that one. how do i tell her that biting is not nice? ive heard a whole bunch of ways but which one is most effective? NO HITTING! some1 once told me to smack my pup on the rear when she bit me while playing. i dont beleive in hitting dogs, especially puppies that are just teething and dont know any better. Never hit your dog. All you do is teach fear by doing that and you'll have an overly fearful, cringing dog on your hands. Instead, if she nips, (and they all do at first because that's the way they play with each other), our trainer at Petsmart said to make a sound like a dog does when it's hurt, like "ow-ow-ow-ow in a loud tone. That is the way other dogs would sound if the puppy bit them and they understand they hurt you that way. when shes older. can i bring her to the beach? I am a miami girl after all lol I don't see why not. But you should probably never let her off leash. Terriers so unpredictable and impulsive that you can't trust them not to take off and not come back even if you call your dog to come back. That's where your flexi leash will probably come in handy. |
