| Leashes What kind of leash do you use for your yorkie? I got Archie the holster kind, which you put around his body, and then his left leg comes through and then he does the hokey pokey and turns himself about... Well, I got that because everyone said that a leash around his neck is really bad for him. But I've had the hardest time trying to get Archie to stay alongside me when I took him out. He'd just go off and he would pull me, instead of just walking next to me. And it seems worse because he's pulling with the weight of his whole body (ribs and all). Now, I got a regular leash...the one that goes around his neck, and he NEVER pulls. He just walks alongside. I don't really like the idea of the nylon leashes because they can hurt so I got him a cloth one. Either way, it works wonders! He's just strolling alongside like a good boy. Out of curiosity...what's your preference and why? How is it working out for you? Does your yorkie pull or does he/she walk alongside you when you take him/her out? |

| I got my YOrkie on a regular leash and he pulls and tugs and even runs. I am going to get him a harness and see how that works. He is extremely active so he will probably do the same. I wish my Yorkie would walk alongside of me.

| I mentioned in previous post that there are more risks with using a reguar leash. THier vocal cords are very sensitive. When I worked in a Vet clinic we would have dogs come in tat couldn't bark anymore, or that had persistant coughs. These were caused by the pulling on the leash. It doesn't have to be continual pulling to cause damage. Some dogs respond better to harness some to neck collars. My mother-in-law has 5 yorkies that she walks, she always taps their botoms with the end of the leash when they are pulling. They hate that so the don't do it often. I know someone who uses a water gun and when their puppy pulls se squirts him, he caught on real quick. Good luck choosing.

| I use a regular collar for Sandy. We tried a harness with her when she first came to us and would have NOTHING to do with it. She was obviously well trained on a collar though, because the second she had one on, she was ready to walk! Tia is still getting the hang of her harness. I have a kitten harness I bought from Petsmart and she pretty much is dead weight in that. When I put her in a t-shirt with a leash hook, she does MUCH better and we've been making progress with that route, so I'm thinking I might look into one of those vest harnesses for her.

| I get so angry when I see people's dogs on neck collars, especially little dogs, pulling people. It's horrible...and it must be tough pulling for it to damage the vocal cords. I heard that before so I had gotten Archie the harness, but he's really annoying to walk with in a harness. Then I watched the Dog Whisperer... If you ever watch the dog whisperer, he shows how to walk a dog properly. I would recommend that show to everyone who has a dog. I've tried it and it works perfectly. Archie has his head up, and just glides, rather than having his head down, sniffing at everything and putting stuff in his mouth. |

| Ok everyone..I hope I don't offend any of you but I have to say that those retractable leashes are my pet peeve. I guess using them somewhere you are 100% sure there are no dangers, no distractions would be fine. You just can't control them properly. As far as our tiny babies are concerend walking on a regular type leash with a harness is so much safer. You think about traffic, bikes, other dogs, people, snakes, etc. it's just safer having them near your heel so that you can look out for their safety. I have had mine out walking and come across big dogs so a leash and harness keeps them safely at your side so that you can scoop them up quickly if need be. I personaly have never seen anyone walking a dog on a retractable that had total control of their dog. The worst is when you see someone with a powerful Pitt Bull or Rott on a retractable..the owner running behind saying "come FiFi..don't eat that poor little yorkie!".

| harness i have a harness... it's actually really good. i could never just hook the leash to the collar. one of my friends who wasn't used to dogs was walking charlie once and she wanted him to come, so she really yanked on the leash and hence the collar and his neck! after that, i got a harness and i don't let anyone walk my yorkie! the retractable leashes are a bit dangerous, i agree... i am not going to use them anymore, as i had a scary experience last week. my pug was on a retractable and he ended up somehow wrapping it around my yorkie's neck! that was horrifying... i had to untangle it quickly and it was so thin that it was really hard to do... but luckily charlie was just fine!

| Harness for Artie I have always used a Harness on my male, he pulls with his whole body and he even stands up on his hind legs and walks when he sees another dog. I tell him "Wait for me" and he usually slows down and stops doing it, if he does not I just take the end of the leash and hit him slightly on his butt and then he starts trying to kiss me beacuase he thinks I'm mad at him. I have a thick Leather "Louis Vuitton" collar with an ID. tag on it and I've tried to walk him on the collar and he refuses to move so I take it that he really does not like it or it irritates his throat? So I just use it for looks and Identification. |

| Harness I use a harness on Lil Bear. Moose on the other hand is so small that I use a collar, but then again the times she's walked outside she was either behind me or at my side...she was a little scared, I will be using the halti head collar (aka gentle leader) on her till she grows into a harness.
