| Allergic reaction So my youngest boy is 3 and he has these episodes of honking but they last only for a minute or 2. I've always assumed maybe early onset of collapsed trachea. Anyway I went to my sisters house yesterday and brought him with and he had his usual episode with excitement but it lasted a wee bit longer. I didn't think anything of it until he was up all night on and off hacking. So I took him to the vet today and they did an X-ray and it shows very mild collapse down toward his chest. The doc said this was likely due to the irritation in his lungs. However she said his throat is so swollen and the lungs are irritated which indicates irritation from something he inhaled. Well my sister had a few strong fragranced candles burning and she sprays Febreze. So it turns out that triggered an almost asthma attack. So he gets very worked up going in the car and also at the vet. I asked for something to sedate him when I got there but they made us wait for almost an hour... I feel that leaving him honking for so long obviously made the swelling worse. Also the specialist was there and did a fluoroscopy to determine if he had trachea collapse. Which I feel made it even worse. I picked him up and his tongue was a light purple and his breathing was even worse. She had given him a steroid injection and sent me home with some to take over the next week or so for inflamation. The office was closing at this point and I said I wasn't comfortable leaving with his breathing so labored. She told me that it should improve within the next hour and that if his tongue turns blue to take him to the emergency vet!!! WTH!!! I just paid $325 to be told that he has inflamed irritated throat and lungs and that he may need oxygen at the ER vet. I'm so uneasy. His tongue is better in color since being home and his honking is less but he's still panting and labored with his breathing. Nothing she gave him was for his lungs. Has anyone had issues with asthma in dogs?? Or bronchial irritation. What is usually given? |

| Also they had to sedate him fully to do the fluoroscopy so maybe he's still anxious from coming off the sedative?? |

| I am very sorry you are going through this. You have a lot going on with worrying about your 16 year old boy too. I would be very concerned about the labored breathing. Many vets offices do recommend transfer to the ER or a 24 hour facility when their offices close. It's disappointing that the vet didn't give you better direction or information. I wouldn't hesitate to go to the ER.

| Very happy to hear he had some water and that his tongue color is good! Watch over him closely tonight. I would be frustrated with the vet too. Sending positive thoughts and prayers for both of your boys to be well.

| Oh my goodness you are really going through a trying time. Two babies sick in a week. I hope everything comes out with this little one as well as with your little senior.i It does seem things could have gone better for you at the vets office. How stressful that had to be for you too! May you all have a peaceful night and a much better day tomorrow.

| It's 1.30 am and my poor baby is still panting. I'm reading the side effects of prednisone and it says panting and coughing. I know there is sever irritation in his throat but in my opinion that has been brought on by the coughing. I feel like a cough suppressant such as hycodon would be more effective. Also wouldn't he need an antibiotic for the severe inflamation in his throat? Maybe there's and infection. Ugh... I'm so uneasy and I feel so bad for my poor baby. |

The cough being suppressed is the biggest factor to the inflammation healing. If he doesn't stop coughing, you'll have to take him back and have them shoot him up with butorphanol +/- acepromazine. Oxygen for CT is overrated. Try taking him in the bathroom while a hot shower is going, this helps my dog a lot. I would move the care of this dog to an internal medicine specialist. Btw, I use high doses of Hycodan. The pill is 5mg and I use 1/2 in my 8 lb dog. It works for us better than about 8 other drugs we tried. Ours has a severe collapse at the thoracic inlet like your dog, but his symptoms are managed.

| Btw, the honking is bad. You have to break these coughs and you can't be afraid to use more drugs and knock him out. I was initially scared off by drugs but ladyjane told me you have to do it and she's right. We had one day of 6 hours straight of honking - we took him to the ER and we're going to euthanize him. They opted to shoot him up and we took him home and for the last four months I have minimal coughing here becuase of the Hycodan. We started it with 1/4 pills every 6 hours but when he got bad we went to a higher dose and he now has an amazing quality of life. CT is a very bad condition, your pup is young, you need to get a handle on this now and fast. I do think ours is bothered by irritants in the air, we have had to stop using certain spices when we cook and cannot use fragrances. Anything that will irritate the trachea is not good especially when he is this inflamed.

Hycodan can go to a high dose even though most vets aren't comfy with it. I go to 3/4 pill if I need it, but knock wood he is good on 1/2 pills every 6-8 hours now. Yesterday I wasn't home so he had the dose after 9 hours and was honking. I gave him 3/4 pill and he fell asleep like a baby all night. It is not overly sedating either, our boy runs around and is very active. I use omega 3a for inflammation and sometimes give 1/2 tsp of raw honey to smooth him.

That's what was frustrating was that she was treating the whole situation as though the inflamed throat brought on the coughing. In reality the reaction to the fragranced candles and Febreze bothered his lungs first and then the coughing started and added to the throat inflammation. They initially thought he had a soft pallet deformation bc of the swelling on his one side (tonsil). Luckily there was a specialist there that was able to look at the X-ray better. So I do understand trying to get the swelling down in the throat but she definitely should have treated the first issue which is the cough. I'm waiting to hear back from her this morning. I hope maybe there is some kind of inhaler or something he can take in pill form to relive his poor lungs. He must be so sore from coughing so long. He's not really eating. I made a purée of chicken and potato, carrots and some kibble and chicken broth and water. He licked a little of it but not a good portion. He is drinking though. Thanks again for your input. Your advice and guidance is very appreciated! | |

Maybe he will eat some scrambled eggs. Also Try some honey. I mix it in a little warm water and sometimes add a little tiny bit of lemon. also I don't know if I said this before but I bought a $15 warm mist vaporizer and it works very well to soothe them. I have to add 1/4 teaspoon of salt to the water or it won't work - we have hard water so it needs the mineralization. I don't use their scent packers, just plain water. When he was very inflamed the honey and the vapor worked on the cough. It is like when we have bronchitis. I just kept it on for 30 mins a couple of times a day. This is the one I have: Vicks Warm Steam Vaporizer - Walmart.com

| I hope your little guy is doing better today, like his older brother. Glad to see Cathy/107barney found your thread. She is very knowledgeable.
