Default Allergic reaction

So my youngest boy is 3 and he has these episodes of honking but they last only for a minute or 2. I've always assumed maybe early onset of collapsed trachea. Anyway I went to my sisters house yesterday and brought him with and he had his usual episode with excitement but it lasted a wee bit longer. I didn't think anything of it until he was up all night on and off hacking. So I took him to the vet today and they did an X-ray and it shows very mild collapse down toward his chest. The doc said this was likely due to the irritation in his lungs. However she said his throat is so swollen and the lungs are irritated which indicates irritation from something he inhaled. Well my sister had a few strong fragranced candles burning and she sprays Febreze. So it turns out that triggered an almost asthma attack. So he gets very worked up going in the car and also at the vet. I asked for something to sedate him when I got there but they made us wait for almost an hour... I feel that leaving him honking for so long obviously made the swelling worse. Also the specialist was there and did a fluoroscopy to determine if he had trachea collapse. Which I feel made it even worse. I picked him up and his tongue was a light purple and his breathing was even worse. She had given him a steroid injection and sent me home with some to take over the next week or so for inflamation. The office was closing at this point and I said I wasn't comfortable leaving with his breathing so labored. She told me that it should improve within the next hour and that if his tongue turns blue to take him to the emergency vet!!! WTH!!! I just paid $325 to be told that he has inflamed irritated throat and lungs and that he may need oxygen at the ER vet. I'm so uneasy. His tongue is better in color since being home and his honking is less but he's still panting and labored with his breathing. Nothing she gave him was for his lungs. Has anyone had issues with asthma in dogs?? Or bronchial irritation. What is usually given?
