Yorkie Talker | Wicked yelps as if scared or in pain when being picked up. Hi All, I want to hear your advice and prior experiences. It's been a little over a week since I've noticed that Wicked cries when being picked up. He is also more cautious jumping over steps (we only have 1 step in the house and to the backyard). His posture when picking up his toy is a little off as well (he'd lower is front but keeps if back leg straight and his but in the air). He usually just go at it without thinking. I took him to the vet last Thursday and she said everything was fine (no broken bones or anything of that nature). She thought it might be a behavioral thing. I was still concern and brought him back for an x-ray this past Sunday. The vet on duty said that the X-ray came out normal and there was nothing of concern. She prescribed steroids for his pain. He will leap over the steps cautiously now but will still yelp when we try to pick him up. All this time he is eating and drinking normal. He walks and runs as he always does. No limping or lameness in his legs. Has anyone ever experienced this? Could this be just a behavioral thing or should I be concern? It's been almost 2 weeks and I am so worry that these might be signs of something more serious if left alone and not treated. Thanks in advance for your replies. -Tawnie |

| What did the do Xray on when you took him to the vet? His legs or his spine? Since they are telling you that they don't see anything in the Xray and offered the steroid I think you should give it a try to see if the issue goes away. He might have an injury that you are not able to see on Xray. Did they offer any pain meds as well? If you don't see improvement after the steroid is finished then your next trip should be to a specialist.

| When he is picking up his toy that sounds like play bowing and lots of dogs do this. The issues with the step make me think maybe LP but that shouldn't make him cry out when you pick him up. Is is possible you could be pinching him when your picking him up? Occasionally that happens when I pick up Callie. Is this a new thing or has he always done this? Where any shots given recently? Have you tried picking him up in different ways?

| Hi Twanie I would be concerned with the yelps and Wicked being cautious as showing something is going on. Buster was diagnosed with luxating patellas (back knees slip out of the joint) and arthritis when he was only 6 months old. Since Wicked yelps when you try to pick him up it sounds like bigger issues. Honestly steroids only mask pain and swelling from my own knee experience so if Wicked is playing he could continue to aggravate his problem. I would recommend you take him to a Board Certified Orthopedic Vet to figure out what is going on. Best wishes to you and Wicked and I hope he is feeling better soon.

Yorkie Talker | His last shot was in June so I doubt it's because of that. He just started yelping within the past week or so. I've tries picking him up in different ways and area and he cries every single time. He seemed afraid of the steps so could it be that he got bruised from the steps while I was away? Will bruising provoke this kind of behavior and how long will it last? The doctor did prescribe pain med for him. |

Yorkie Talker | Caroline, Thank you for your response. I've been researching a lot on the internet and did raise my concerns regarding possible LP and rupture disc to the vet but she said that base on the exam and X-ray she does not think those are likely. I will keep on monitoring him and will seek a specialist if he does not improve. Thanks again. |

| I hope Wicked feels better. He is so cute in his avatar photo, he reminds me of Buster.

| A little story, I NEVER "pick up my pups" I "scoop" them up, meaning I put my right hand under their butt, I put my left hand under their front legs and "scoop" them up. Some years back I had to take my lil "big" girl (now past) to the vet, my regular vet was not on duty that day and I had to use another one that was not familiar with my dog. I don't remember why he choose to pick her up, the way he picked her up was, he wrapped both his hands around close to her mid section and she yelped, I was like kinda bit upset that he picked her up that way and when she yelped I was really upset. When she yelped he said I think she has Pancreatitis, he rans some test (this is going back 7 years ago) I don't remember what tests were given, but that is what she had. I remembered before this visit a friend came to visit, they had many yorkies over the years and they picked my dog up like the vet did and she yelped at that time, I told my friend "after all the yorkies you have had I can't believe you would pick up a dog that way", then I told them to always scoop her up. I thought nothing of it, thought it was just the way she was picked up because I always scooped all my babies up. She never showed any signs of not feeling well, she was a good eater, happy, overly playful, very active she was about 10 years old. I was shocked to find out she had Pancreatitis, because she showed no signs of not being well, she was always happy and very playful. . She was put on meds and special diet. She never showed signs that your pup is showing, the bowing, and I have one step to out out to deck that leads to back yard, she never hesitated to go down that one step, or the other steps that lead to the yard. I am just throwing this out there for you. If xrays showed nothing, ask your vet if it can be Pancreatitis, only because of the crying he does when he gets picked up. Good luck, I will keep lil Wicked in my prayers.

Yorkie Talker | UPDATE: After three days of pain medication, Wicked is showing signs of improvement. He is able to leap over the one step without hesitation and is slowly going back to his playful self. I will continue to monitor him as I am not sure if the medication is just a temporary fix. I will wait two more week before attempting to pick him up. My heart aches every time he cries. Thank you everyone for your concerns. |

| Poor baby! I'm so sorry to read this and what's going on with your little angel. Steroids never fixed any behavioral problem that I know of except to make the dog taking them pretty hyper. There is something causing that pain and it sounds like the steroids are calming the inflammation, reducing the swelling but if that pain hasn't entirely gone by now, I believe I'd want a second opinion by an internist, otherwise known as diagnosticians.

| Did they do an oblique cervical X-ray? I don't think I would be going the internal med route. I would be going to orthopedist or neurologist for this, not internal med. I could be wrong but this sounds mechanical to me. I'm not a vet, but that would be where I would go if this were my dog. I don't think this sounds normal.
