When he is picking up his toy that sounds like play bowing and lots of dogs do this. The issues with the step make me think maybe LP but that shouldn't make him cry out when you pick him up. Is is possible you could be pinching him when your picking him up? Occasionally that happens when I pick up Callie. Is this a new thing or has he always done this? Where any shots given recently? Have you tried picking him up in different ways?
