| Yorkies vs the smoke alarm battery warning If you live in a house with a zillion smoke/CO2 detectors (we have one in each bedroom and one per floor in addition to that), you may have seen this behavior. When the batteries get low, the detectors beep. This drives my guys crazy! The most insecure (Daisy) immediately starts shaking and wants to crawl up my shoulder. Even Mr Gatsby was getting freaked out, and he usually does not get scared about anything. These beeps are impossible to triangulate and figure out which battery is low. Yesterday I felt so sorry for the guys, as I had to leave them when they were freaked out to go get more batteries. Then, when replacing them, you are supposed to press the "test" button whenever you replace a battery, and they got all freaked out again. Next time, I have to replace then when they are out for a walk. I wish I knew why they hate those beeps so much... |

| It probably hurts their ears. Kind of like when some dogs bark at dog whistles. Zeus and Ody cower when it goes off and when it stops, THEN Zeus will bark.

| Lola is not afraid of many things but the smoke dictator low battery signal is one of them and we must have 15 and some are to high up for me to get to, so naturally those go out when the DH is not home. Poor Lola sits in corner and shakes each time it goes off. Ours are maddening because sometimes even after changing the battery it will continue to sound off for a while.

| This reminds me if a few weeks ago when the smoke detector was low on batteries at 3 am! Mia woke up crying so I held her until my boyfriend went and bought a battery at Walmart. She also barks at the freaking ironing board! And the vacuum...oh god the curse of the vacuum!

| Tibbe freaks when he hears mine or those on TV in the ads! He barks and doesn't run off but he's often shaking when it happens, less now than when I first got him. I immediately treat him when it does happen and let him outside with a little pile of treats to enjoy while I take it down and change batteries. It happens so infrequently I don't try to desensitize him to it or anything but just let him know when he does hear it, he will get treats and get to go outside with more treats.

| When the smoke detectors go off in my house, dogs scatter in every direction, and the look of terror in their eyes would break your heart. They dive under the covers, some go up under the bed, some go to the "safe house" which is a cat house that 2 of them run to during storms....they run to my chair, they run to me and try to claw their way up my leg if I am standing up....if I am in my recliner, they jump up in the recliner and begin to try to bury themselves behind me. It must be excruiating painful to their ears, as these babies "Have No Fear" tatooed across their butts! So, they have ME very well trained....I change the batteries every 6 monbths, rather than annually, in order to prevent the Reign of Terror that blankets the house until that monster's shreek can be silenced. |

| I guess this may be off topic... but when you said ironing board (lol how funny) It made me think of my puppy being scared to death of a bag of garbage... Shortly after bringing him home I was replacing the bag in the can and hesitantly set the full bag on the floor thinking that he would surely go after it... to the contrary he took off running. Then a couple nights ago there was a piece of aluminum paper in our yard that blew in from somewhere. When I brought him to go out he stopped and started barking at it like crazy (He almost never barks) I thought I'd show him that it was just paper but when I tried to walk him to it he freaked out like someone dropped an ironing board on him. He was shaking like mad. I felt bad afterward cause my intent wasn't to give the poor thing a heart attack!... Silly little creatures they are. |

| Oh man! A few weeks ago the smoke alarm in my bedroom started to randomly go off. I changed batteries, I left batteries out, I tried to unplug it (it is hardwired and I couldn't do it!) Finally, around 3 am I found a duster can spray thing and dusted the detector all over. It finally worked! My poor dogs! Buddy got sick of it and went downstairs to sleep in his kennel but Blazer had a heck of a time with it. I had him in his kennel and it was covered but every time the alarm went off he would whine a bit. I felt so bad for him, I knew it had to be hurting his ears!

| Your poor little ones! Our alarms upset my guys too. Teddy cowers and Max barks at it. Our alarms are deafening and sharp, so I can understand. It's not something they deal with often, so I'm sure it is frightening. Our alarms are hard-wired in addition to having battery backup, so they go off when the power goes out and comes back on.

Mine is too....but it actually plugs into the system, up in the hole in the ceiling....which, oh by the way, are 14 feet high in most of the house, 12 feet high in the rest of the house....so we are running out to the garage to fetch an extension ladder to reach those dad gum things in the middle of the night. So, I unplugged the thing where it attaches inside the ceiling, and we still have the batteries in them, so they continue to function....they just dont go off with power surges, power outages, etc. (Maybe that is not considered hardwired if it attaches to the entire system through the wiring?) | Oh yes, my little ones are terrified of the smoke alarms. I try to keep the batteries changed about every 1 1/2 years so that stupid beep doesnt happen. Always seem to happen in the middle of the night Alot of shaking going on! |

I used to change them out every year, but have tested the (remaining) Battery Voltage for extended periods, and the newer (< 5 yo) Detectors are quite ok for 2 years. I have five Smoke, and one Carbon Monoxide.

| Happened to mine too. Thankfully, it didn't take me much time to google how to change the battery. My boy rushed to my side when the random beeping started. It was almost hilarious if I wasn't so panicked.
