You're absolutely right, they don't beep when they have good batteries in them !
I used to change them out every year, but have tested the (remaining) Battery Voltage for extended periods, and the newer (< 5 yo) Detectors are quite ok for 2 years. I have five Smoke, and one Carbon Monoxide.
