| Help ! Fleas? When I got BJ I took her to the Vet for the required exam. He combed thru her hair with a flea comb and showed me little white flakes which he said indicated fleas. She was only 7weeks old. I paid him for a supposed flea treatment. I combed her today and noticed these flakes again. I wouldn't know how to identify fleas unless I actually saw a flea! I am charge over $100.00 for each visit to get her shots and exam. Do any of you know if this is an indication of fleas and if so why the treatment didn't work? She is due for her last series of shots incluing rabies and then I have to have her spayed I guess before 6 months. She will be 12 weeks old the 29th of Feb. I raised toy poodles but never with them or any of the dogs I have had did I have to deal with fleas. Thanks. |

| Fleas and flea poop are dark brown/ black. Flakes can be indicative of mites, or dry skin. What treatment did the vet give you for him?

| I agree with kjc - fleas and their dirt are dark, not white... If your vet said white flakes were from fleas, I would be looking for another vet for their opinion.

| I would being changing vets as of yesterday. I would not let him spay her or give her anymore shots or anything. A vet that thinks flea dirt or fleas or white needs to go back to school. Good luck and hope you find a wonderful vet that knows what they are doing. |

| I agree - Pheebie had white flakes when her skin was too dry. She had a bad reaction to Pet Head shampoo several weeks ago. I've since started using Mink Sheen and it was getting better but she still had hot spots. Vet put her on antibiotics and the white flakes and hot spots are almost gone. I don't know if this works for others, but I use Revolution for the flees and it works beautifully...not a flea in sight. |

| Flea eggs are a white or almost clear looking thing. They are small and round. Usually eggs are laid in the furniture and carpeting, but they do sometimes lay eggs on the animal's body. It would seem if what your vet saw was flea eggs that there would also be fleas or flea residue. You can't have eggs without fleas. Maybe you should get your own flea comb and check your pup frequently. It is possible to have fleas on a dog and not know it until there are so many that it is hard to get control of them. Running a flea comb through the fur everyday will help you to catch anything that may appear on your puppy. If you take your puppy out as it gets older it is a good idea to use something like Advantage or Frontline to prevent a flea infestation. When I first moved to where I live now we never had fleas. Then one year they seemed to invade the area and it has been a battle ever since. |

| Kathy they have given her so many shots and said she had ear problems, gave me medicine to put in her ear. I thoought they said it was advantage, he put it on the top of her coat and rubbed it in. The flakes are not mites, I know them they do look like dandruff. I bathed her last night and I did not see anything. I combed her coat and pulled it apart and looked for any sign of bites. I wonder if they are tellling me things that are not true. I just lost my husbnad four months ago and I am not speaking up. Also it scares me because I lost my first yorkied 5 weeks after I lost my husband that is way I have BJ. |

You did get your puppy at a very young age so it would require more sets of shots than an older pup would need. They can only give a little bit of the immunization at a time with pups. | |

| First, I am sorry about your husband, I lost my husband 10 months ago, So understand.. My prayers to you.. Next, I think you should find another vet. Sounds like he knows you do not know and is taking advantage of you. Fleas are black all day and night. White flakes may be dry skin. Please come here ask any questions you have. No spay before 6 months. |

As for BJ and all puppies, they only need the DHPP (comes all in one shot) 3 times, normally given at 8, 12 and 16 weeks of age. If the vaccines are started at 12 weeks, it needs to be boostered at 16 weeks and that's it. The Rabies vaccine is best given a month later at 20 weeks or later (depending on state laws). All other vaccines are optional. Then at one year of age, the DHPP is given, and ideally a month later, the Rabies is boostered. It's best to give any optional vaccines (Lymes, Lepto) one month or more after the last Rabies (24 weeks +). One cannot see mites, but dandruff like flakes can be caused by them, along with intense itching around the ears, under the front legs and on the tummy and chest. Revolution is a topical spot treatment that is a Heartworm preventative, kills fleas, mites, and ticks, and some internal parasites. Topical spot treatments should never be rubbed into the skin. There is a product that is put in the ears, but I'll have to look that one up. I don't think it's Advantage, but I could be wrong. No topical product should be placed in the ears. Many do help contol ear mites though normal application. Here's a link to compare, it only listed Advantage Multi so I don't know if that's what your vet used or not: Compare Flea & Tick Products - Reviews & Ratings I also only purchase tick, flea, and heartworm products from my vet, never online or from petstores/grocery stores. Here are some other links: Info on vaccines is here: Diet, Nutrition, and Health Library - YorkieTalk.com Forums - Yorkshire Terrier Community The entire YT Library: YorkieTalk Yorkshire Terrier Library - YorkieTalk.com Forums - Yorkshire Terrier Community

| Spaying is a personal choice: I believe in waiting till they are 8-12 months old, especially for the smaller pups. There are pros and cons to doing it too early and after the first heat... I'll try to post some links in the next few days.... I forgot to say: My vet says that Yorkies are prone to getting mites, so I am sure to use a topical treatment that controls them... I use Revolution bc it's one chemical (and my vet recommended it).

| Thanks Gracie. I got her from a breeder of Maltese and Yorkies. She raises show dogs and sells the others for pets. I never thought she had fleas. The vet upon examination just took a flea comb and combed through her she was so tiny and a few white flakes showed up in the dark hair. He said that was an indication of fleas and I had to have flea medication. Now every time I see a white flake freak out. I have NEVER had fleas on any of my dogs and I know what they look like. The ear, I think she may have had a slight infection and the meds they gave me cleared thst up. There are about 6 vets in this practice and you get a different story from each one. There are two who own it. I like the other one but they try to schedule me with the same owner each time. Their charges are different also. Last time he gave her shots he said she is in great shape. I said Finally you say something positive. I realize the size means dividing the shots. The Breeder told me that but I go to them because they are so close, very popular and well known. Took our Doberman to them years ago but that vet retired. I appreciate all the feedback. No one around my neigborhood has a dog like this. Muts or one has what I call a Junk Yard dog. Barks and chased my husband when he cut grass. I don't take my Yorkies around other dogs out here and they are so small a long walk is almost more than they can handle so i play ball with BJ and race with her up and down the hall. She gets exercise. When the weather gets nice we have a fence enclosed patio my son put on for our beloved Dee Dee. Room to run and lay in sun and see outside also potty. I hose it off. |

| Thanks KJC. I was told to have them spayed before coming in heat, safer. We had Dee Dee done at about 6 months and she weighed about 5 lbs. as adult. Will look for information. Thanks again. |
