| Ha ha ha! Elvis does nothing! He knows some basic commands but he doesn't do any tricks. He will occasionally sit or walk or dance when the other two are asked to do a trick for a treat and he will randomly perform with them, but because of his arthritis I don't really make him do the agility or tricks. Getting him okay with a leash was enough. Scoobers on the other hand: dance dance pretty find Milo (where's Milo) sit stay roll over bang (like play dead but he's not so great at it) he can identify all his toys on command put his toys away (clean up still working on it) over & back (part of agility) lay down treat on nose up pose (he will jump on a chair or stool and then sit up front paws folded and on his back legs only all circus style) alarm clock (he wakes his boy up when the alarm goes off every morning) get it (he knows this mean find the moth-I know Milo taught him, but he is a mighty moth hunter) probably a few more random things but that's the jist of it and Scoobers knows these with both verbal and a silent hand signal. I love the hand signals it makes him look all officially trained (he always gets ear infections so his hearing can be an issue) it just looks so cool to give a hand signal and have your dog perform. Now if I could just get him to settle down and recall....

| We did our "Tricks for Treats" last night (it's the signal for Gizmo and he gets all excited) and currently he knows: Sit Stay Speak Jump 'n Spin Tap Other Paw Tap Up (Sit up) Roll Over Play Dead Stay Come Down Crawl Drop It We're still working on stuff!

| Well I have Charlie "lay down" from "sit". He will do the sit with or without my hand signal and even if I'm not right near him . For lay down however he is following my hand signal down to the ground. Does this sound normal for just beginning to learn? I have to be leaning over and put my palm face down and practically touch the ground for him to do it. I hope he will eventually learn to lay down without following my hand. But, he does lay down and stays down for a sec and I give him his treat while he's still in position. Want to practice "shake". Do you just get them in "sit" and say "shake" as you grab their paw then give treat? Thanx in advance. I'm checking out youtube channel's I was given too. |

Down Command Down - YouTube! You may have to take his paw the first few times for Shake, with plenty of praise before he gets it down pat. Shake Command

| Does it usually take them long to learn down without following a hand? If I just say lay down after he has sat he just looks at me! Congrats on Ella Bella learning it. Last edited by Charlie_Boy2011; 01-25-2012 at 02:55 PM. |

Really confused her when I tried to teach her to Come and pointing at the floor, she'd run up n lay down. LOL After I used a different hand gesture she started to Come when called. We worked on this on and off all day today, along with Sit and Down to reinforce them.

| I'm concerned I didn't do "down" right. I didn't know better and when I began teaching immediately was using the word instead just taking him through the motion and marking it with "good". Like I said he will go into "lay down" from "sit" if I use the hand motion too. But if I were to say "sit" he wouldn't pop right back up into position like I saw pups on youtube do. And he still looks at me clueless if I just say "lay down". Do you all think I should start over from the beginning with "lay down" or just continue what I'm doing daily and hope he eventually learns the word and even will go into lay down from standing and what not!?! |

| Almost all of my commands are one word commands-I made sure I chose thigns that heaven forbid my dogs were ever lost and found by someone they could easily guess what my dogs know: dance sit back down bed leave it (no) When I trained for lay down it was sit first then I actually used my hand on the shoulders and gently showed lay down by pushing and my dog went down-of course the issue was them rolling over for tummy rubs...no matter how you do it rewards and consistency in effort they'll get it.

![]() Working on crawl on the couch. He will do a little but we run out of couch length. He won't do it on the floor. I can't reach down far enough he lays down a ways away, so he is basically just popping up and walking for the treat. Can't get him to do turns. He just backs up, won't circle. Roll over isn't working he doesn't want to get on back and just stands up to try to get treat. Not sure what to attempt besides keep on crawl. He definitely is ready for something new. Maybe I should buy a clicker too. Last edited by Charlie_Boy2011; 02-07-2012 at 05:41 PM. | |
