Default Ignorance is bliss, right?

Get ready for a mini-novel:

First off, hello! I'm Dee. I've been here for a few weeks but never really made an introduction. I was waiting till Teddy was home before I did any of that. So yes, I'm from Texas and have just got my first yorkie puppy. I had a rescue yorkie before that passed away due to heart problems. I got her when she was older, and I hope I gave her the best life. I love this board and I have learned SOOO much, especially what to look for in a breeder, I was incredibly confident with my choice, but with that being said:

Teddy FINALLY came home, after such a long wait. While he is an adorable puppy I feel that I have been lied to. I was told he would come with AKC papers and pedigree, but he came with APRI papers and no pedigree, no certifications (his parents tests which I asked to see). I was told I would get copies of all of these things and when I asked about it, she said all I have to do is fill out the APRI form and it will send me the pedigree. (BUT the parents aren't AKC either and APRI really is not credible at all) He was handed to me and he had a bad smell like old pee. But the breeder said he was given a bath yesterday. My thought process was well..he is a puppy, they sometimes step in their pee.

What worries me is that, even though I saw that he was coming from a family environment and I met the parents, I didn't really see where the puppies were kept. (They were all just out running around when we went over, I assumed their sleeping arrangements were xpen) He's very reserved. When I met him the first time he was bouncy and happy to meet me. I think maybe it could have been the stress from the long drive and being taken away from his family (he's 16wks and im sure he's super attached to his mom and littermates) I have not had a new puppy in a VERY long time. I've always rescued adult dogs, so im not sure what to expect, but I don't know how normal it is for this behavior and also to have super soft/runny stool. When we got home I sat with him outside and he pooped and then when I went to pick him up he flattened himself on the ground. Which seems really uncharacteristic for a "well socialized" puppy.I gently calmed him as I picked him up and now he's fallen asleep on me on the couch.

Now, it's like why did I take him when I felt really uneasy.Well, I felt bad for him and the breeder told me that many people were asking about him and I don't want him to go to the wrong person who might not have patience for this little guy. This little puppy being handed to me just looked so scared and I didn't understand what happened to him over the past two almost three weeks since I saw him last. My hubby said he's just scared and to give him a few days as he handed the breeder the money. The breeder was such a nice person that I really didn't want to believe that all may not be as it appears. However, on the drive home my husband suggested that I get a DNA test to give me peace of mind, my response was "well, ignorance is bliss right?" I think I will get a test though, I didn't pay an extreme amount being that he's a parti yorkie, but if he's a mix then I overpaid and I would really hate to be the person to sue my breeder but I thought I was getting a dog from this really great person who has turned into someone pretty fishy...

Don't get me wrong I am happy to have Teddy and I will work with him on his socialization and confidence. I have no problem helping this little guy, and I will love him no matter what. it's just the fact that I may have been blatantly lied to that upsets me. He's going to the vet on friday (sooner if he continues to have runny stool) if he has anything going on this breeder will have a lot of explaining.

Here are some pics, he's now inching his way to get closer and closer to me. Such a sweet little guy. If this has ever happened to you, what did you do?

He is a very cute boy! If his stool is still soft tomarrow, you need to take him in. There are several things that can cause this in a puppy bacterial infection in his intestines and parasites, both of which need to be addressed quickly.
I noticed that he has a collar on in the pics. If he is uneasy about it you might try letting him wear it in small amounts until he gets used to it.
Hope he is feeling better quickly and adjusts to his new home. He needs lots of soft talking and hugs. When I brought my puppy home last spring I even rocked her. She has adjusted very well and runs the house now.

I don't know anything about partis but he's cute. I didn't know they had that much white on them. Did you not ask about the AKC papers he supposedly had on him while you were there at the breeders? It's such a shame how there are SO many dishonest people nowadays. I would get him DNA tested. Even if you found out he wasn't full yorkie, you wouldn't love him any less. I think you need the proof to show to the breeder.

Did you get any paperwork on him? Micro chip papers? Anything with an address on it? I found out the hard way, when I didn't know anything about dogs. My Uni had papers but the "breeder" couldn't "find" them and would mail them to me. she was local, but when she finally got around to mailing the paperwork (surprised I even got them) for the microchip they were from out of state, a clear sign she is a broker or reseller.

This has never happened to me. And I'm so sorry it happened to you!.

Runny stools are not uncommon when the pup is getting used to his new environment, but definite mention to the vet on Friday or earlier as you said. Make sure he keeps well hydrated and warm (sure you know this too).

I would want a BAT test done unless the breeder did one before releasing the pup to you. 16 wks is the recommended time frame for this test. Bile Acid Test. It is a simple test and is done with a blood draw.

I don't know the laws in the US, but you definitely were lied to, and that doesn't sit well with any-one. I'm not sure if you did ask the breeder for the AKC registration number and names of the sire and dam, but that could have been a huge flag if she was unwilling or unable to supply their details. BTW do you have any written documentation where she refers to the sire and dam as AKC registered? Emails, posting on her website?

There are facilities that do genetic testing, not too expensive I believe. Mars testing is one name I have heard of.

There was a thread on here in Breeders Review I believe where a similar situation occured. You can do a search to see if you can locate it.

I would want to have a very very through check out of this pup; given that she lied to you about the registry of her dogs. Go to the vet with stool sample, urine sample, ask these be tested. Also have the vet perform a through exam, knees (you want to know if this pup has LP - luxating patellas, eyes, ears, testicles(are both descended?), Bat as mentioned before, heart (listened to), hips palpated (see that vet does extension and internal rotation), hock joints (should be supple, not lose or rigid), rib spring. Exam skin (looking for clear skin, no rashes, bumps, or abrasions). Look at mouth and teeth.

Your pup looks very cute indeed.

He is so gosh darn cute! I don't have an advice because I knew nothing about the extent of puppy mills and that there where brokers until after I got Callie and found this website. Then looked up a few things and found Callie came from a puppy mill and that I got her from a broker and she is my only dog so I have never dealt with a breeder. I could not imagine life without her but we have had some health issues. I hope everything goes ok with him and that he is just a little scared because of the change.

Teddy is absolutely precious. Congratulations on your new little boy

Gemy gave you excellent advice, I would follow her suggestions.

As far as him seeming to be uneasy and flattening himself to the ground when you went to pick him up, it may not mean anything. Belle has been with me since February and she still sometimes does that when I bend down to pick her up. She reacts better if I get down to my knees first to pick her up.

I did ask her about the AKC information before I gave her a deposit. She said she will get it printed out for me when I pick him up, so when I asked her why the papers were not AKC she said it was cheaper to register her litter with APRI. However, when I asked her to supply the parents paperwork (in person yesterday) she said she didn't have it printed out. I assume she doesn't have any. She seemed like a really good breeder but I guess she learned how to tell people what they want to hear. I will report her to the AKC as well as APRI if the pup is indeed a mix as well as for lying to me. Ugh people are so disappointing.

As for Teddy, well that first night is a doozy isn't it? I have not slept yet, he cried in his crate for 3 hours straight, I live in a townhouse and have two neighbors, I heard someone scream through the wall "shut uppp!!" so I knew I had to get Teddy to stop. Of course he easily passes out on the couch. Does anyone have any suggestions? I had a water bottle in his bed, a clock on the side, soft music, he was in my room just in a crate. I understand that he's just scared so I guess i'll catch some Z's with him on the couch.

For this I recommend moving his crate or expen to your bedroom, it's scary spending your first night away from your mom and litter-mates all by yourself in a strange new place. Rizzo was a very quiet puppy, but I had always planned to have his crate in my room for nighttime so he could see and smell me. It seemed to re-assure him, and I believe many new "parents" have found the same result when they move the puppy to their rooms.

Just a side note, if you never intend for Teddy to sleep in bed with you, DO NOT let him sleep with you in your bed ever. It only takes one night of cuddling up to you in bed to leave the lasting impression that that is where he belongs and he won't know what he did if you put him in the crate later on, thus much crying through the night.

Good luck! I envy the cute puppy face, but don't envy the puppy phase, lol.

As far as the breeder stuff goes, I'd listen to Gemy, she seems to know more about that then I could ever imagine. I'm sorry that you feel duped, but you did get one adorable pup, regardless of lineage. I just hope he is as healthy as he appears oh, and some small pups just don't like being picked up, it makes sense, having a huge human you don't know suddenly launch towards you to grab you, I can sympathize with that.

Thanks for the tips!

I did have him in my room, but because of the structure of my house my bedroom is adjacent to my neighbors and Teddy was crying nonstop. My husband took him downstairs and we just let him cry but around 4AM I couldn't take it anymore so I took him out and we went outside and ran around the townhouses with him to tire him out. Once he got tired (on the couch) I put him in the crate and sat with him while I slowly closed he door. He eventually fell asleep for an hour and woke up crying.

When you have the puppy in your room what can you do to get him to not cry. I'd rather him in my room, but my neighbors are going to hate me ><;; This is the first puppy I've had in a LONG time and I actually feel clueless lol this is quite the experience.

Dee, all I can say is these first few days are the worst.

Funnily enough, not with Harry (our Yorkie) - but with Rosie (our labrador).

We have the same house set-up as you - and of course you're going to worry about the neighbours (especially when they're shouting at you!) I wonder if it might be worth popping next door to see them and explain the situation (are you on good terms with them?).

You seem to be doing everything you possibly can - maybe others will suggest one of those cuddly kind of breathing toys (!!??!) sorry I don't know what they're called!

Presumably he's eating ok and his tummy's nice and full? Sorry I'm not much help....Sally + Harry x

Oh puppies are exhausting!! I remember it well.

With my Sophie Kate she HATED her crate at first, she would cry and carry on like a crazy girl. What I did is make her crate a place where she wanted to go, I added a nice soft pad, a fleece blanket and a Nyla bone (all of which are still in her crate today 3 years later). It took a few times of her crying a lot but she adapted in fact today she hangs out in her crate and gets really mad if the cat ventures in there.

Are you crate training Teddy as part of his potty training? Another suggestion would be maybe try a Ex Pen along with the crate- I did not do that with Sophie Kate but my next one will have an Ex Pen also.

Good luck, Teddy is adorable.

Welcome to YT There is a reason why your puppy is not registered AKC and it probably has something to do with the parents registry or lack of. If she didn't give you AKC papers for your puppy I don't think there is anything to report. As for APRI anyone can register any dog even mixed breeds through this registry and it really means nothing at all so once again nothing to report. He's very cute but I couldn't begin to guess is he's pure bred.

Teddy is adorable. As far as crying at night, I have used a playpen with an open top next to my bed for one of mine, another one I put in a small crate on my bed and that worked for another one of mine. The main thing is to give him time to adjust to his new home and be consistent. They learn real quick how to get you to spoil them. That's why Mine as all spoiled!
