So Lily is finally going to fly with me and the doctor prescribed Acepromazine. I am soo scared to give it to her. She has been thru so much. He suggested it is best for her. | I fly frequently with my two dogs, including one who is prone to anxiety issues, and I have never medicated either one of them. They are both well trained to go in their travel bag and be quiet and they settle down nicely once the plane engines begin to sound. Check with the airline- some airlines have rules that their boarding agents can deny boarding to any pet that appears to be tranquilized. If you are going to medicate her, I would try it out once before you go- there is no way I would give my dog a new medicine and then get on an airplane. I can guarantee there is no way an airline is going to land a plane for a pet emergency. Is she used to being in the travel bag? If not I would start getting her used to it now and make sure she spends time in it every single day between now and then. Make sure you travel with wee wee pads, wipes, and nutrical.

| we ust drobe 3200 miles when we moved and my little male was not a good taveller, our vet gave him Ace Promazine as well and he did great. He also used to take it before his ultrasounds and echocardiograms, never had a bit of trouble with them. I also have a friend her little girl had ACL surgery and her vet had this little girl on it for 6 weeks to keep her calm and it never did her any harm either. Good luck, do not let the med scare you

| I would suggest that you work on training your dog to be in whatever carry-on you'll be taking her in. Keep it open in a high traffic area of your home and let your dog go in and out at will. Take her to some places outside your home. Give her some high value treats and praise her for staying calmly in your carry-on. When I first started trying to acclimate Snickers to his bag, I let him explore it at home. Then, I put him in it and walked around the block a few times. After that, I started taking him to different stores while in his bag. The hardest part of flying, I found, was layovers and the waiting, because they are supposed to stay in their bag and all pet relief areas seem to be outside, so you have to go through security multiple times. My vet gave me Acepromazine, but I never used it. I probably never would at this point. You can have it with you and give it only if absolutely needed.

| I also definitely think that is a good plan.

| Before my first flight with Toto, I talked at length with her vet about my plans. She said absolutely that Toto was not to be sedated ... she was tiny. So ... I ordered her Sherpa carrier, sat it in the middle of the den floor, unzipped the front and the top and waited for her to show interest ... she showed none! I dropped a favorite toy in the very back and she would peek in but would not go in there. The next day I dropped a favorite treat in the back and waited/watched as she kept slowly peeking in several times and after quite some time she quickly flew in there, grabbed the treat, ran back out and ate it. It was really funny to watch but I learned that if everything associated with that carrier was fun and happy, she would go in there. I always talked to her with the "happy voice" that she loves and soon she would go in and out with nothing to lure her in. I put one of her favorite little blankies in and soon she would go in and nap, etc. After that I would zip her up and take her in the car to visit places that she liked and just always making her carrier a fun/happy place to be. I also taught her that the only way in or out was through the front .... even if the top is unzipped and wide open. She loves to stand up and look out the top but she has never, ever jumped out ... she always waits for the front to be opened to exit the carrier. It took 2-3 weeks to teach her but she quickly learned that the carrier was not scarry but a really fun place to be and we have been flying with her for 7+ years. Good luck with your little one and I hope she loves flying as much as Toto does!

They've both been on over 10 plane rides, and the thing that usually scares them the most is at security - they hate the clanging and rolling and all the noises. They are usually more than ready to jump back in their carriers after we get through. I figured it's worth mentioning I have tried several different carriers, from the farily nice (Coach, Juicy, PetFlys) to the most basic (Sherpa). I find the Sherpa to be the best for us. The other carriers had to be rotated sideways, which I hated, to fit under the seat completely (depending on the flight attendant ), but the Sherpas slide under very easily and are much lighter weight to be carrying around. My girls are big at 10 and 12 lbs, so the lighter the carrier the better in our case. Good luck!

| You've gotten a lot of great advice. When we flew with Ian from ATL-BDL (Hartford), his vet said to give him Benadryl. (I forgot how much.) Well, it did absolutly nothing for him. He was fine until towards the end of the flight...he wanted to be held. I snuck him out of his Sherpa carrier and held him under a very light jacket, until we landed. No one know he was in my lap!! We did not give him any meds on our return flight, and he was fine. As gaijingirl said, make sure you get your baby is use to his carrier. I would leave Ian's unzipped in the bedroom, and he would jump in it. I then started pulling him around in it, and he loved it. Oh, we got the Sherpa carrier with wheels. Have fun on your trip...let us know how everything turned out!!

| Thank you so much for all your advice! I really do not know what to do. She is getting use the carrier, but the problem is when i take her in the car she is panting so much.. I am afraid she is going to pass out.! i will continue to get her use to it. I really do not want to give her anything. The doctor says she really needs it. I disagree. He did say benedryl doesnt do anything. My girl shakes at everything lately. Even storms now she never did that before. I am so confused on what to do. Some airlines do not let you take them out of the carrier either.

| I traveled with Cooper 2 years ago on a 2 1/2 hour flight. I was really scared at how he would react, as this was our first flight. My vet suggested a mild sedative (i can't even remember what it was). I tested the sedative a week before our flight to see how his reaction was. He was pretty out of it and there didn't seem to be any side effects. On the morning of our trip I gave him the sedative and he was very calm during the entire flight. He was still a little "out of it" by the time we landed but perked up after a while. I'll never know if he could have handled the flight without the drugs because I never gave it a chance. It's possible that I, like you had more anxiety than my dog. Traveling With My Small Dog On An Airplane I'm not pro or con sedatives. I think it depends on your dog, with your veterinarians approval, and testing done before the day of. As for the shaking, you may want to consider the www.thundershirt.com. It helps for storms and anxiety.

| Flying We have not flown w/Sprocket only traveled in the car which he loves but before Sprocket we did fly alot as DH dit work for several diff airlines. OK this was several yrs ago granted, but some things don't change. The stew makes the difference in your trip in the cabin, most LOVE little dogs but have very strict rules about the dogs, not so much about kids , remember, there always could be an emergency if your baby is in here carrier she is probably safer, they always tell you get down low, www.dogjuant has some good tips for travel. I would not use the meds cause most things dont sedate Sprocket well. The tip about the travel bag is VERY good. We use his alexbag for travel at home and I would not hesitate to use it on the plane and planes are cold wear a sweater, oh one more thing, be sure Lily is used to "going" while she is on the leash, airports are funny about our little people, some just love our little ones, some won't even budge from the "rules". Always in harness, always on leash, she is as protected as you can make it. After all she has to get out of the bag sometime!! You have to plan for the emergencies. And air travel is what it is these days, I sure wish you guys luck.
