Biewer Dogs - Don't know how all of you feel.

I found one in the south that might be willing to do IA but not sure. I am hopeful I would love to breed one.

Let me explain....I do livershunt pedigree studies. In the regulation Blue and Tan Yorkies.....myself and several breeders from all over the world have trace the beginnings of livershunt to ONE English kennel...the "fatal liver gene" (as it was described in the 40's) was thought to be in only one kennel in the 40's. I have testimonials from breeders of that time. Now several of my research friends from at least 4 different countries have also traced livershunt back to this English kennel. A couple of years ago livershunt surfaced in a well known Biewer kennel in Germany. Since the Biewer is basicly a closed group of breedings down thru the lines...they were only bred to each other who carried the parti-gene....it is very important to attempt to trace the line back to their English beginnings. But so far we have run up against a brick wall.....not able to get back further than the original German registered Yorkies. Getting this information would be extremely helpful in our attempt to isolate the livershunt gene. This would almost prove our theory of the orgins of livershunt....which we believe was a genetic defect orginating in one dog....is indeed a problem beginning with that English kennel. Of course livershunt is so wide spread in the breed today....this English kennel is behind many of todays winning show Yorkies....knowing where it began is not going to be a cure....but it could serve to aid breeders in their choice of breeding until we can find the DNA marker.

I only wish we could get breeders to help with this study....but alas livershunt is still a shunned word in the Yorkie world. Other breeds have almost elimated the disease by sharing all the breeding information in their respective breeds.....not so with the Yorkie people.....it's still a secret to be whispered about behind people's backs.......sigh!

Thank you for asking !!! We are digging into this a little further, but are going to wait until after the holidays. It can be very hard to communicate sometimes, if you don't know the language. This is such a busy time of year. Also we planning on a trip to Germany in Oct. 2006 (anyone is invited to join us, we are thinking it would be fun to have a group) and are trying to set up a meeting with Mrs Biewer herself. And this way we will be able to speak directly to one of the founders... Don't have confirmation on this as now, but is our goal. I understand that she still attends the dog shows over there. I happen to love the look of the Beiwers and Parti Yorkies and eventually I'd like to add a couple to our home as pets. However, we are currently living in a gated community that only allows 2 dogs per household under 25 pounds each so with my two boys I'm already at that limit. Gee, I wonder if I can add up the weight of 4 of them and if it's still under 25 pounds maybe I can get away with it...ya think? Anyway, we won't live here forever so maybe in a couple years I can start looking for our new additions.

Haha...we have the same situation and I think the adding up the weight thing makes sense...to me anyway. LOL!!! I am way over with 5 dogs but mine are service animals so they are exempt under the rules. Yay for service dogs!!

I looked up the German Standard for Beiwer's. Do not misunderstand me. I think the Beiwer's are beautiful, but they are not a Yorkshire Terrier. AKC set specific standard for Yorkies many years back. They do not fit the Yorkshire Terrier standard and could not compete against the Yorkie. I am sure if AKC accepts them, they will not be competing against the Yorkie (except in Toy Group). They are beautiful and I hope that AKC does accept them for show, but under their own name (Beiwer) and not Yorkshire Terrier. They are a special breed of dog, just as the Yorkshire is. I am probably not making my meaning understood, so I will stop here. Ricki

Biewers are yorkies. The Akc standard for yorkies is 4-7 lb but yorkies that are larger or smaller are still yorkies. Theres also Chocolate and parti yorkies that dont fall into the AKC standard but they are still yorkies.

Biewers are absolutely gorgeous. I had looked into getting one a couple of years ago and contacted a lady in New York. They're a little too pricey, though. Parties are pretty too but I love the look of Biewers.

But Biewers and yorkies are two totally different breeds.

That's exactly how I feel abd that's why Mr Biewer developed this breed and the standard.
I do hope they get recognized by the AKC someday. Now sure how they are gonna do it. It will probably be after my lifetime. Well, I'm gonna breed them and keep to the standard until all of that gets figured out.

IMO, AKC will eventually recognize the breed. With everything new, they wait a while to make sure that the same results will be proven again and again. It could take 10 - 20 years...but one day, you will see them recognized.
