I didn't get my parti-colored gold and white yorkie from them but here is my Princess Chai who came from traditional standard colored parents who carry the gene. You cannto see it in this picture very well but she has 4 white feet and white on her chest and striated throughout her coat...she has no black or silver.

| What concerns me is what are the effects of recessive gene breeding. I know that in humans it is responsible for some very devistating diseases. I have a great niece with Frasier Syndrome that came from her parents recessive genes. It broke up their family and has changed their lives forever. Has any research been done on the breed to see if there are higher incedence of liver shunt or other problems that are gene related? I would be interested in reading that and learning more. For me I fell in love with the Yorkshire Terrier and have no desire to own any other breed. |

If you study genetics I think, if I am not mistaken, you will see that even blue eyes for example are "recessive" as is blonde hair generally, so I think you may be misunderstanding the meaning of the word "recessive" in scientific terms.

| Sue....I'm new here. But I have a question for you. I read your webpage about tracing back to the first Biewer. I too have the original parents. Darling of Friedheck X Fru Fru of Friedheck were indeed the first parents of the Biewer. I have many many pedigrees of the Biewers. But my question....have you been able to go back any further? Let me explain....I do livershunt pedigree studies. In the regulation Blue and Tan Yorkies.....myself and several breeders from all over the world have trace the beginnings of livershunt to ONE English kennel...the "fatal liver gene" (as it was described in the 40's) was thought to be in only one kennel in the 40's. I have testimonials from breeders of that time. Now several of my research friends from at least 4 different countries have also traced livershunt back to this English kennel. A couple of years ago livershunt surfaced in a well known Biewer kennel in Germany. Since the Biewer is basicly a closed group of breedings down thru the lines...they were only bred to each other who carried the parti-gene....it is very important to attempt to trace the line back to their English beginnings. But so far we have run up against a brick wall.....not able to get back further than the original German registered Yorkies. Getting this information would be extremely helpful in our attempt to isolate the livershunt gene. This would almost prove our theory of the orgins of livershunt....which we believe was a genetic defect orginating in one dog....is indeed a problem beginning with that English kennel. Of course livershunt is so wide spread in the breed today....this English kennel is behind many of todays winning show Yorkies....knowing where it began is not going to be a cure....but it could serve to aid breeders in their choice of breeding until we can find the DNA marker. I only wish we could get breeders to help with this study....but alas livershunt is still a shunned word in the Yorkie world. Other breeds have almost elimated the disease by sharing all the breeding information in their respective breeds.....not so with the Yorkie people.....it's still a secret to be whispered about behind people's backs.......sigh! Another example is the ears.....in Yorkies small upright ear is a "dominate" gene. Floppy large ears are recessive......breed two dogs with proper ears....and small upright ears will be the result...always. One correct ear and one floppy ear will result in a mixed litter. I have corrected ears in one generation by only selecting the puppies with proper upright ears...even if one parent had bad ears. With ears....what you see is what you get. So it's the same with genetic illness.....if it's a recessive gene there is no way to know when it will surface.....until we breed two recessive carriers together....and disaster strikes. This is why breeders do line-breeding or in-breeding to condense the gene pool to test for any recessive genes the parents may be carrying. In-breeding DOES NOT create an illness......it only serves to reveal the problem so the dog/bitch can be taken out of a breeding program. It is only when we continue to breed carriers that a problem will become wide spread in a breed......remember it's recessive....so it is unseen. AND yes!! we are pretty sure livershunt is a recessive gene....must be carried by both parents in order for a puppy to be "affected". BUT problem is we cannot idenitfy the "carriers" as it is thought to be recessive...we need the DNA marker in the worst possible way. In test breedings of two "affected" and surgerial corrected livershunt Yorkies...no affected livershunt pups resulted....thus the need for the DNA marker. D | |

| Biewers originated from regular yorkies they just have a certain gene that creates the beautifil tri-color. If you look at them they look just like a standard yorkie with the exception of the tri-color. They are beautiful. |
