Confused 3 year old female yorkie gone MAD!

Okay so maybe not MAD but she is either CLEARLY MAD at me or she is protesting something! Lets start with some back ground as this is my first post here.. We got Izzy when she was 3 months old and she was a very very very sick little girl Kennel Cough wheezing this lasted for a good 3 months many many many doctors visits (horrible breeder! thankfully she got in trouble and is no longer breeding) so this whole stint of being sick really hampered our OUTSIDE potty training as it was winter and we tried to keep her out of the cold as much as possible. SO we puppy pad trained her.. which she does pretty well she LOVES to potty on the carpet so we gated off the bedrooms problem solved... We have had problems here and there with her peeing or pooping on rugs in the house but once we correct her she stops... UNTIL NOW! she REFUSES to potty outside or on her puppy pads... she chooses to potty on any rug in the house.... so I took up all the rugs and crated her I turned my back (after going outside) she pee'd on the floor.. I am at my wits end and I am thinking my husband is going to call that show on animal planet "the dog or me" I have read and read and read and read but cant seem to find much on ADULT problems. I know Yorkies are stubborn this is nothing new... BUT this has gone on for a week and I just don't know what to do! We also have a 2 year old English Bulldog that is completely house broken (outside) this helps none! What can I do I WOULD love to do away with the puppy pads and have her go completely outside... I might add that when she goes outside she marks everywhere ( she is fixed ) Sorry this is so long Please feel free to ask any questions I am desperate here!!

Hi and welcome to YT! Most on here will ask first, has she been to the vet recently? Is she peeing everywhere on your rugs or is she ping number #2 also? If she is suddenly peeing everywhere I would check for a UTI or bladder problem. If it's not a medical problem I would then start from scratch with crate training. Treat her like a puppy don't let her have full roam of the house. Stick to a schedule on crate training and take her outside when you know she has to go. Don't come back inside until she goes, wait for however long it takes her. Then give her a treat when she goes and praise her! I'm sorry but I really think you are going to have to start from scratch with her potty training. Be patient with her.. She's not crazy. It may be medical and if it's not she is just regressing and needs reinforcement and strict training. I hope more come along with more advice and tips for you. Good luck and welcome again!

Nope...she is not mad. The one thing that you said that jumped out at me is that you correct her. I don't know what this consists of, but if it is at all what she perceives as negative, you are defeating yourself. They do best with positive reinforcement. She could just be very confused and honestly that is what I am thinking may be going on. First you taught her to use puppy pads, then you wanted her to go outside....she went on the pads and got corrected and now she has no clue what you want. Perhaps this site will give you some tips:

When I say corrected her I mean I have cleaned it up and put her on her puppy pad and told her as we always have "potty" good girl and we give her a treat while on the puppy pad. and I didn't explain clearly I have never expected her to go outside she gets to go out every time our bully goes out but she has always been puppy pad train and we have never tried to outside train her... nothing has changed in our expectation of where she should go potty.. What I meant is that if I am going to start all over I would rather train her to go outside but being a little dog I will never expect her to not have accidents inside (one of the main reason I have hardwood flooring put in my house ) Thanks for the reply and for the concern and to answer the 1st reply its both potty and pooping! if it was just one or the other I would fear a problem and I did take a urine sample in but it was clear and our vet really thinks its behavioral as do I Just not sure what road to take guess since I will be off the next two days with a sick child I will work on that! and on that note they are never alone more than 4 hours and that is just 2 days a week so its not that they are being left alone to often! teehee! I will try to post a pic but I have not figured all that out yet!

If the throw rugs are old and not your favorites...turn them into "washable potty pads" - I realize that's going with the flow probably too much but pick up all the rugs...put one down by the door you eventually hope to train her to go out and let her have at it/wash/replace/rinse/repeat. Just an idea. But washable potty pads are fairly expensive and really not much different (???)
But you might not want to take my advice as it comes from someone who has multiple disposable potty pads located in strategic places throughout the house (during the winter) - summer time they use the dog door to their own "outhouse".
One of our dogs absolutely won't go (poo) anywhere but in the hallway (during winter) - we relented and put a potty pad there. Problem solved (for the carpet anyway). But we work during the day and potty pads are a must around our house.

Kendra thanks for the reply and I am not joking when I say this but.......... she got up from my lap a few mins ago and went potty and poo'd on her puppy pad SMALL VICTORY! for mommy anyway hahaa funny you say you have one that will only poo in one place during the winter... I can NOT move her pad or she will not use it... well I did move it back in November...but she did fine with it (for the first time ever) so when she first started this I put her pad back to the place it was before November thinking well maybe she just doesnt like where it is... but then she pee'd on the floor where I moved it from errrrrrrr sometimes I just wish they could talk! I would gladly do the rug thing but she was going on ALL OF THEM! I am going to leave them put up for now then I think I will put them back down one by one and see what happens.. she is enjoying a treat right now but she is going to be sad because I have been putting her in her crate to sleep all week since I didnt know what she was going to do while we were in bed and she WILL NOT go in her crate... but I think from now on its the best place for her even though I miss her snuggling with me so spoiled!

She might be smelling her potty scent on the carpet and that's why she continues-even after you provided a new spot and training for it and if you used cleaners on them...have you steam cleaned them after them being removed for a bit? I went through this too.

Slowly increasing her area might help, from crating at night, to a play yard area, to access to only one room...small steps and consistency.

Scoobers used to potty where he'd slept it was "unique" to his prior abuse as it is unnatural for dogs to do this...so we had a hell of a time with potty training...he was scared of grass at first so we use a litter box in the bathroom and wow it was so hard to get there...picking up potty and putting it in the box...steaming the floor-he was only allowed in tiled rooms-washing his blankets and his bed from his play yard-he couldn't be crated it was too traumatic for him to it was like a cage to him. He now has just started using a crate made for a dog three times his size....

We finally got to the point he went in the bathroom in the litter box, then on the pads, and he was okay with grass and outdoors etc...but man was it weird to see a dog come in from the yard and run to the bathroom to potty and then back outside...

Finally we moved the whole thing outside...he had accidents on the bathroom floor and even a regression to trying to find a new spot in the house to potty...so we had to schedule feedings...walk walk walk and reward him every time he went outdoors-I also made a special spot for him to go outside-it was so frustrating the first couple weeks I swear one day I was at my wits end...we walked for over two hours I knew he had to go...finally I gave up we came home and he pooped on the floor immediately upon entering the house!

But we kept on going...and we haven't had an accident in a year now...we got a puppy who needed potty training and Scoobers regressed a little then, but it was mild we worked on it and we stay working on it...he may never be able to be like other dogs and be considered trained he may always have times of regression; as long as he has his schedule of feeding, potty and exercise, and has access to a designated potty area, we see no accidents in the house. But it took a lot to get here!

Hi welcome to YT! I'm so sorry you are going through this with your pup, but I must say potty training yorkies (at least for me) is VERY difficult. Mine was doing well but since I don't have a backyard due to living in an apartment I was training on pee pads and using a walking schedule. I'm STILL having issues with accidents and Ollie is almost 11 months old, not to mention my entire apartment is carpeted (sigh) but I know he'll get there. Just be patient with her, stay on a STRICT schedule and she'll come around

I think its a common problem the more I read these threads. My 2 1/2 yr old is having the same kind of problem. He has always gone on his potty pads, but for the past couple of months, he has gone EVERYWHERE!! We can never ever catch him in the act...anytime we are home, hes an angel and goes where he is supposed to. We have resorted to "locking" him up in our laundry room when we leave now, where as he used to have free run of the house 24/7. Its very frustrating! We have never crate trained...we used a method where we had a small area fenced off with his tee tee pad and gradually made it larger and larger..I may have to start back to square one there!

KendraE yes its very aggravating and we too couldnt catch Izzy in the act they are very sneeky! Today we are having a good day sooo far!! We did crate train but over the past couple of years have not used the crate at all... but I have resorted to her sleeping in her crate at night and putting her in it when we are not home it breaks my heart esp at night but I know she will not potty in her crate so if it helps solve the problem then I guess that is what we will have to do I put 2 of the kitchen rugs back down today after they had been washed and we will see what happens as these were her FAVORITE potty spots this past week! Fingers are crossed!

They are sneaky, aren't they??!! lol Ours sleep in crates at night, love their "beds" and by 8:30 at night they go to their respective crates and want in!
We had set up an x-pen for the pups with a pup tent in it (so they had a little "house" and "yard" - but contained.
When you have to be gone: Why not get an x-pen - put in a crate with the door blocked open/removed so she can go in and out when she wants to sleep and feel cozy, yet have a potty pad covered "yard" outside the crate, yet still within in pen? Also by going on the pads every time she's in there she might make the connection. I know our pups were actually better about using the pads than the adults...which I "kinda" attribute to use of the x-pen/potty pads in it for the pups.

Look at others' posts - maybe in the picture forum -- some people have got those really cute x-pens, decorated them, placed a potty pad in one corner of it...More I think about that I'm going to do that with ours.

I do know once spring hits (we got 10" of snow last night...so I'm thinking it'll be awhile yet) we're going to really do some spring cleaning - get the professional carpet cleaners in here and try being more strict with the pads and doggie door.

For what's it's worth - we feed Royal Canin and their "poops" are always very firm and small - hardly a big deal to take from the potty pad to the toilet.

We have an Xpen problem is she has figured out how to jump out of it....... We used the Xpen for our Bully when she was a puppy doing exactly what you said you do with your puppy's but Izzy being the smarty pants that she is........ Learned that she can use the holes in the sides to her advantage! Thankfully at this time my husband is a stay at home Dad while finishing his BS degree so he is home except for on Tues and Thursdays they are alone from 11:15 to 2:45 so its not very long just something she has not been used to now come summer he will be done and back to work so hopefully she will not have her potty problems and she can have access to the hardwood area's of the house... To be honest the Poop does not bother me as much as the Pee does because like you said her's is firm small and easy to pick up but its the pee that you dont know its there till its too late and then its soaked in!! THANKS everyone for the warm welcome and the many GREAT ideas!

Children's wooden slats play yard...soft sided play yards like the Best Pet one work but not if you have a serious escape artist I love mine (pink in a medium) but my mini schnauzer figured out how to escape in .3 seconds now...
