| DeBarking I don't want to start a controversial thread, but I read recently that someone said debarking is done by ramming a metal bar down a dog's throat and I was appalled at the thought so I did a little research and found out that it is accomplished by a surgical procedure that is safer (according to this author) than neutering and/or spaying and is done with a laser in most cases. A part of the vocal cords is removed to reduce the volume of the bark but the dog can still make some noise after the procedure. None of my dogs are debarked and I would not consider the procedure for my dogs as I do not agree with elective surgeries for mine, but I thought it was important to put the facts about the procedure out there since there seem to be misconceptions by some. Here is the link http://www.naiaonline.org/body/artic...debark_qna.htm Now, I am ducking for cover. |

| That was me who posted the debarking thread! Thanks for posting that info. The metal rod thing just made me sick... Still haven't decided if we're going to get her or not. She is asking a great price (i think) but I still need to convince my husband that we can spend that money now. I feel like I need to bring her home and love her! she is 4 years old..so at least I'm beyond the puppy chewing stage (right?!) And she is almost housebroken Her name is Lily and she's about 6 lbs. |

I am very well aware of the surgical procedure involving debarking. There are some pet owners who choose to have their dogs surgically debarked. I personally do not agree with this, but as least the surgical method of debarking is done it a clean and safe environment by a vet.

| Kim, I have heard of this being done by puppy millers. Its a brutal, heart-less act and I cannot imagine. When I am reminded or read about things like this, I realize that this world is divided into two catergorys regardless as to who you are or what you do: Good and Evil. The first time I ever read about de-barking i remember I got sick to my stomach the entire day. I appreciate the fact that I am surrounded by so many Good people on Yt and it makes it easier to stay educated on the Evil stuff so that we all will know how to spot it and take action if we ever encounter such things... |

| Debarking a dog to me is like saying, I want to have kids, but I don't want them to cry; Let me take out their vocal cords. It is absolutely insane and no matter how it is done, I have no patience for it. |

| Some Links To Debarking Please Note: I am NOT referring to the surgical method of debarking Check out these links which mention the cruel method of debarking (ramming a rod down a dogs throat): 1. Check out the last 3 sentences in the first paragraph: http://www.congress.org/congressorg/...r_id=498565236 2. Scroll allllllll the way to the bottom and check out the poor little doggy named Wyatt Earp -- he was debarked by some rotten puppy miller: http://hillbillypets.com/Login/index...mand=viewshame 3. Look below all of the pictures of the puppy mill rescue dogs at the very first paragraph: http://anniehughes.com/roar.htm This one was so sad that I had to copy and paste the text. Here is what #3 says: "THIS is what the PARENTS of those cute puppies in PET STORES look like. They have been severely abused: neglected, starved, beaten, mauled by other dogs, blinded and, most horrendously, DE-BARKED (achieved by a metal rod down the throat driven with a HAMMER, rupturing the vocal chords, breaking the jaw and teeth, causing the dog's tongue to hang limply from its mouth). CAN YOU LIVE WITH THAT? How can anyone? PLEASE - boycott pet stores that sell live animals."

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Oh Jennifer - those links were so graphic - I hadn't seen that site before - How SICKENING Pet Stores are Puppy Mills are. I'm not even going to say any more about that - I don't believe in ANY surgery that is just for human comfort and De-Barking in any form sounds just sickening....I'm sure there are people out there who will continue to do this - but I sure don't want to see it encouraged or made light of - it sounds like a very serious procedure with possible serious consequences - The metal rod thing is evil - just evil.
