| Advice From Rescue Volunteers - Please I am looking for advice from all the YT Members who volunteer at rescues. As some of you may know I have been looking for about 8 months for my next Yorkie. I have decided that I want a rescue. I have tried to educate myself on rescue dogs by volunteering at my local Small Dog Rescue on adoption days. In the last 2 months I have tried for 6 different Yorkie puppies from a different local rescue and cannot seem to get their attention. It's discouraging to me since I have tried so hard to do the right things. I even tried an older Yorkie but on his day visit Sophie Kate stressed him out so badly, the volunteer and I decided an older puppy might be ideal for Sophie Kate (she cornered the older Yorkie and kissing him like crazy, the poor boy pee'd all over my family room, Sophie Kate is such a hussy). So here is my idea, the rescue that seems so intent on ignoring me is holding an event at a large park in Atlanta on September 10th and they are welcoming the public and their dogs. I thought "hey I should go and take a reference letter from my vet, dog walker and groomer" So tell me is this a good or bad idea? I sometimes tend to get a little focused and pushy when I want something. Honest opinions are welcome and will not hurt my feelings. Thanks, Cheryl

| sounds like a great idea, I did not have a great experience with the rescues in my area either, also look on craigslist, one of the yt members sent me a link to my yorkie only about 2 hours from me, or call your local vets let them know what you are looking for, they will keep you in mind if if an owner needs to rehome a dog. |

| I would say go for it. It can't hurt anything to let them know you are serious in your intentions to adopt a rescue. |

| Honestly, I don't think that doing that is going to win you any points. There must be a reason they are not responding to you and I would simply move on to another rescue or shelter. Rescues have a right to set their standards for adoption and pushing them is not going to make them change their minds and give you what you want. You could try to ask them, but many will not tell you why you are being denied and honestly there is good reason for that. I was turned down as well many years ago and just chose to look elsewhere.

| I just sent you pm as well, but have you looked into Atlanta Pet Rescue? Atlanta Pet Rescue & Adoption They have some biewer puppies and a few adult yorkies right now. The biewers were surrendered by a breeder with the mom and dad awhile ago, and they are just now healthy enough to be adopted.

| maybe ladyjane is right,, i often dont understand the rescues, i was unfit to rescue when i applied because i have 3 sets of steps, they said it was a yorkie waiting to die, i had 2 yorkies from 16 weeks neither jumped to its death,,, i free feed and shaffer is about a pound overweight so in their opinion im a horrible pet owner, I was upset at the time but in hind sight it was a good thing because I found cooper who infact i did rescue from a life of a 24 hour cage lack of health care and love,, he couldnt be a better fit with my other dog shaffer and me. I hope you find the dog you want. I also know that rescues have rules,,, but i know im a good owner passed my vet ck and my ref check i care for my dogs better than some people care for kids,, I think the rescues make it hard to adopt, and turn many people off to the process, hence people buying dogs at a pet store, I think that is also horrible but i know many people who have done just that. |

| Wow, I didn't realize rescues could be so picky. I worked with Yorkie Rescue Me in the DC/MD/VA/PA/WV area and their requirements were basically that you had an understanding of the breed, could provide what the dog needs, and had a safe/stable home. They did a home visit and you filled out an application, both of which seemed like good measures to make sure that the dog was going to a loving home. I think rescues are (understandably) concerned about putting a dog who has potentially already been through trauma and/or upheaval into a permanent, forever home. The last thing they want to do is to get a rescue back. I would perhaps ask them frankly why they are not considering you. There might be a misunderstanding there, or they may be aware of something that you're not.

So...I still wanted a pupster.....What did I do??? I started looking at shelters and I adopted a darling girl (a yorkie mix) in 1995. She was two at the time. My Sassy passed away last year. I established myself as a responsible pet owner with Sassy and another yorkie who came a year later...Maxwell. It was then that I was able to adopt about five years ago. Let anyone who thinks rescues are wrong spend a year in a rescuers shoes and then come back and tell me that they are wrong in what they require! Sure...some good people get turned down. That is going to happen...but, my MAIN goal is to avoid placing them with the wrong people who will end up putting them back in the system! Please do your homework thoroughly before bad mouthing rescue or blaming them for anything. Your intent may not be to bad mouth....but you are blaming and that is patently unfair imho.

You are telling me that they adopt to anyone who completes an application and has a home visit? I seriously doubt that! Did you process the applications or did someone else do it?

The application was reviewed by someone at the rescue. It was a long application but touched on some really good topics.

| i did my homework on the rescue, and i do tons of volunteer work for a shelter in my area but they dont often get little dogs, I can tell you 100% i take my dogs to the vet 2x a year fir check ups and when they need to go if an illness comes up, my fife had g4 lp, both kees they were repaired at univ of penn, he also had legg perthes, his hip was also replaced at penn, when his trachea started to collapse, again we went back to penn, then cornell, and to dr weiss,,, i assure you my dogs are well taken care of,, the rescue I contacted said my house was unsafe because I have 3 sets of steps they didnt like that my one dog was 1 pound overweight, and that deemd me as a bad owner, maybe it does I dont know, however I feel that they made a wrong choice in my opinion, I in no way wanted to upset you, but I have heard time and time again when I volunteer that they make it so hard to adopt at many places that people decide to buy a dog at a pet store, I will never again get a dog from a breeder, I may not be able to rescue from certain rescues but i see it as their loss, ... I was fortunate enough to find a great little yorkie that needed a home from a person here on yt,and I am very happy. |
