| What would YOU do? so the people that moved in next to me a few weeks ago have a Mastiff. its prettty Huge, and this mastiff isnt the friendliest thing around. he barks and growls and lunges on his leash. But, he is well trained in the fact that he will listen to his owners and come when hes called... so a few weeks ago... i was walking past my neighbors apartment with shasta when the mastiff bolts out of their open front door growling and barking... i immediately pick shasta up (although she thought she was going to protect me... lol) and the guy was standing right there and called his dog back and he went back in side. no harm.. the dog never really got past their patio... just scared me a little. it happened again last week. They had it out on a leash in the grass area another time and the woman owner was holding the leash, the dog charged and dragged the woman behind him , but the man was able to stop his soon enough. again, as long as they keep their dog under control, no harm, i know what its like to have an aggressiive dog.... Well... last night... i got home from school and took shasta out on her leash to go potty.... 2 seconds after i stepped out of our gate on my patio i was walking the OPPOSITE direction of my neighbors house... and i hear a very loud barking... i turn around and see the mastiff charging toward me... he stops about 50 feet away and has his hair up and barking... shastas already in my arms by this time barking her head off. i just stood there with my feet planted knowing that as soon as i turned my back the dog would come closer. he charged again and came within 10 feet of me (owner still no where to be found) and stopped again still barking with his hair up and growling. i stood there for a few more seconds before the dogs owner finally came out and called him a few time till he finally came back to him. the owner says "sorry" i just shook my head and walked away with shasta.... I now know that its not that the dog gets out the door past them... its that they leave their door wide open so the dog can go in and out as it pleases. the dog and i were standing out there for at least 45 seconds before the owner even came out.. meaning he hadnt even noticed his dog leaving the apartment! there is a leash law in CA and im pretty sure it still applies when your in an apartment complex.... Also, the people above me have a rottweiler... well what theyve resorted to doing is tieing their dog out on their patio when theyre not home. they have just enough leash so that he can get about 1/4 of the way down their stairs... just enough to charge down and freak out anyone who walks in front of our apartments. and also just enough that he can stare down on our patio and bark at our dogs if we take them out. on top of the fact, if he were to slip and fall, hed end up hanging himself down the stairs.... So..... at this point... taking the dogs out is a scarey process... is the dog above gonna break through his collar? do the neighbors have their door open? the most frustrating part is that the apartment complex lease doesnt allow rottweilers or mastiffs if i remember reading right..... i have nothing against either BREED of dog.. in fact... they are some of the smartest dogs there are... but.. the owners.. aparently not as smart... so now im torn as to what to do... i know i should go talk to the manager and explain whats been going on, but at the same time... 1. i dont want to be on bad terms with my neighbors 2. im afraid if they make them get rid of the dogs theyll end up taking them to the pound.... 3. i currently have 3 days when im only spose to have 2. (although theyre not there all the time) Thank you for listening to my extremely long rant

| Confused Why haven't you turned them in already? You can't be sure the dogs will end up at the pound. Maybe someone else can watch them, as their current owners don't seem to be watching them closely enough. Also, what was your last statement? you're only supposed to have 2 days and have 3? Call the apt. office now before you and your furbaby gets seriously injured. |

the managers KNOW that the people above me have a rottweiler... because about a month ago they flooded their apartment and ours because they didnt hook their washer up right and so they had to go into their apartment when they werent home and ended up taking about 20 minutes to baracade the dog in a room so that they were able to get in. the people next door just moved in about 3 weeks ago.... and it wasnt till last night that i was actually extremely afriad. Im at work and school all day today... but tomorrow when i get home from work i think i will be stopping by the office.

| You need to make sure that your concerns are on file with the apt. manager at the very least. I would also go through with a formal complaint to the local animal control office. That mastiff is going to hurt someone eventually. Hopefully its not you, your pup or someones small child. Also, re-read your lease regarding the rules about pets. Breed limitations, size limitations and so on. Leaving a rotty tied up to the door all day can't be acceptable/legal and is borderline abuse in my eyes.

| ugh. I think I'd have a talk with the apartment manager. This sounds like a potentially dangerous situation for not only you, but everyone else that lives there. If the lease states no rottweilers, then they're breaking it. Personally, I don't care for big dogs. It's not only the dog's potential to harm people, it's the failure of the owners to properly train them and control them.

There are no Weight Limitations... but this is what it says about breeds: The following is a list of breeds we do not accept at this time: For dogs, Resident must provide a veterinarian-provided breed certification. a) The following breeds of dogs, whether full- or mixed-breeds, will not be accepted by Owner under any circumstances: Airedales, Akitas, Alaskan Malamutes, Basset Hounds, Bloodhounds, Bullmastif, Chow Chows, Doberman Pinscher, German Shepard, Giant Schnauzer, Great Dane, Husky, Pit Bulls, Standara Poodles (miniature Poodles are permitted), Presa Canario, Rotweiler, St. Bernard, Terriers (West Highland, Jack Russell and Yorkshire Terriers are permitted), Wolf hybrids. i really have no idea what kind of mastiff it is... it looks liek it could be a bull mastiff but also may be an english mastiff... which isnt on the restriction list....

| I would tell you to call your local SPCA, let them come out to the property and evaulate the dog and everything. Sometimes they can get their point across better than others. I have had dogs all my life ranging from little ones, to big ones, and it really is the owners fault for making some of these dogs be mean, or do nasty things, if i had a big dog that i knew I couldnt trust other dogs i would certainly make sure i took care of that. Good Luck to you!

| CALL THAT IN TO THE POLICE!!!!!! Trust me, its only a matter of time before something happens to either you, Shasta or someones child. They are irresponsible and the police will NOT give your neighbor any info as to who called it on. My boyfriend is a seargant so I know. I had a pit bull do the same thing except he didnt stop and he got a hold of my Mason (shih tzu) and the vet said a few more seconds and he would have snapped his neck, that I was just VERY lucky. Dogs can be trained but they have a will and sometimes they DONT listen. CALL IT IN!!!!! Before its someones child and you have to live with the fear that you could have changed things. |

i agree... our first thought when we saw the rotty up there in the first place that he was gonna charge off and hang himself over the edge where the stairs start cause the first time he could only get to the very edge of their patio. that definately cant be safe for the dog.. or someone who has to deliver notices, packagess, or anything else to their front door.

| I don't think that you should be worried about being on bad terms with the other tenants, THEY should be worried about being on bad terms with YOU. Obviously THEY don't care, you need to protect Shasta and yourself. Just do it in the nicest way possible, good luck!

| Im really shocked that these large breeds are allowed in your apartment duplex, many apartments here in Delaware have a list of breeds whom are, and arent aloud in these type of duplexs. You could always call your police, if they perhaps have a non emergency number, and just tell them that you would rather not have your name involved with the actual call, since you do not want to have harsh problems!

I'd still make my concerns known to the apt manager and then make a written record of the conversation. If the manager fails to act and something bad does happen, guess who's on the hook for liability along with the dogs owner Talk to some of your other neighbors and see if they have had similiar experiences with this dog and you can all approach the manager together.

| that is one of my biggest fears is that hes gonna decide he DOESNT wanna listen one day... i know theres kids constantly riding scooters, bikes past our apartments and im not sure how the dog would act as ive never seen his reaction to kids, only to me and shasta... but its pretty scarey. I raised Dobermans for years and they were professionally trained by a gentleman that trained the K-9 unit. Any trainer will tell you that you can have the best dog but if he gets it in his mind that he wants something, there is nothing you can do...all the training in the world will go right out the window. I had one that was great, perfect, beautiful, people couldnt believe how well trained she was. If I said stay that dog would sit for hours until I said the words ok but she LOVED squirrels and if she saw one....she would hop the fence and go crazy trying to get to it. Who cares about your neighbors they obviously dont care about you or Shasta. |
