| Pet Store Visit... SUPER SAD I am not looking to purchase until April, but I always love looking at puppies. My cousin called me and said she had been to a place that had Yorkies. I walked in and it SCREAMED PUPPY MILL! OMG I want to cry right now it was HORRIBLE. All puppies were in large wooden pens. About ten puppies per pen, with one food bowl, and one unclean water bowl. There were about 8 pens... so were talking 60-80 puppies. (No Yorkies) All seemed to be "designer" breeds... ShiPoo, MaltiPoo, ShiChon, Morkie, etc. They had a few full breeds, Bichons, Chihuahuas, Pugs, and Cavalier King Charels Spaniels. These puppies were all in litter. There was no bathroom area, and no where for the feces/urine to go. There were no blankets, no sleeping area, no toys, and not one puppy barked while we were there (A whole 5 minutes.) There was the exception of the Shih Tzu's who were fighting, very loudly, which the girl working there ignored. I feel horrible, I know these are sick dogs. The Bichons weren't even white anymore. All the dogs were incredibly tear stained and they all looked soooo sad. The stench was unimaginable. I went to another place that I had seen online and SAME THING!!! It is DISGUSTING, and I want to rescue each and everyone of these poor furbabies. Is there anything that can be done? If these pet stores are purchasing from puppy mills can they be shut down. Are there board of health laws. Where should I be complaining? Because I thoroughly intend to complain to someone... about BOTH locations. (All these stores contained was PUPPIES) I was feeling horrible, but I went to PetSmart on the way home to look at some toys and whatnot. I am always preparing for when April comes around. There was an adorable little girl with a 4mo old Yorkie girl. When I tell you this baby was show quality... NO LIE! GORGEOUS!!! So I asked her mom for some information about where she got her puppy. She told me from a breeder in Philadelphia and that she paid $750 for her. The vet said she was PERFECT! So when I asked for the name of the breeder, she said it was her last litter and wouldn't give me any information. I am crushed. I know that many people can spend thousands on a puppy... but I can't. I've researched and contacted breeders in my area about upcoming litters and they want $2500 minimum for a puppy. I just can't. Don't get me wrong I have the ability and money to care for a pet, but I can't justify thousands of dollars for the initial purchase. Why can't I find a baby for $750 that's perfect and not from a puppy mill????? So maybe I went a bit off topic (I know, I'm frustrated and extremely sad about what I saw today) and I guess the most important question is where should I be reporting these Puppy Stores to? It is SICKENING! (I won't be sleeping well tonight.) Last edited by suzeb29; 01-30-2009 at 02:59 PM. |

| breeders will have bigger dogs for cheaper prices... i know you want the perfect dog, but without the money, you can't get them... but no matter what type of dog you get you'll love him/her whether this dog is show quality or not.... if you don't mind having a bigger yorkie, there are breeders that sell bigger yorkies for cheaper... good luck |

| I don't know if you have your heart set on a puppy or not, but what about adopting an exmill yorkie? So many come out of puppymills and need loving homes. Just a thought. |

| Heart is defnitely set on a puppy... but that aside... Does anyone know the steps I need to take to report these "Puppy Stores?" Or is a pet store allowed to get their puppies from mills and then treat them like crap! Still disgusted and heartbroken about those pups. |

| That's absolutely heartbreaking. I'm glad you are going to look into reporting these people. Around here it's not very difficult to find a nice yorkie from a private breeder for under $800. I don't blame you for not wanting to spend thousands. I can't justify that either. Be patient and keep looking, I'm sure you'll find your baby in time. |

| if you can spend 750 and you have that available, why not put it away and over the course of a few weeks or couple months save a little extra? I mean you just said something about April, so maybe you have some time to save more for a puppy. I know there is puppies out there for cheaper then 1,000 from good breeders but you may have to travel. Good luck |

| I'm definitely saving extra in these up coming weeks. And I don't mind traveling. I wouldn't want my baby shipped because of "bait and switch" and I'd also like to meet him and his parents before deciding. I think I may have gotten off topic in my original post because of my horrible day. I think seeing a beautiful Yorkie, at a decent price, from a private breeder and then not being given any information really crushed me. I'm not buying until April anyway. I have a cruise planned in March, and it's not fair to get a baby and go on vacation without him. But the point of my original post was more on reporting these so called puppy stores. Is that plausible? Where to start? Are pet stores liable for mill pups? I just don't know where to go, and I don't want my complaint lost in the shuffle or not looked into. Are there laws for pet stores and how they treat their animals? |

that is untrue.. there are puppies out there that are perfect that wont cost you thousands of dollars. Keep looking you will find the puppy that was meant for you. Your post broke my heart, how sad is it for those puppies to live like that. I think its awesome that you are looking into how to shut them down.

| I know that noone has answered your original question...and sadly I don't know the answer either.. However the first step I would take is contacting your local Animal Shelter or Animal Control...Asking them what is the appropriate steps or actions...I'm sure they should know the answers!!! If they don't they should be aquainted with someone you can get in contact with that will. Good luck hon..and keep us posted!! Also it is true that you don't have to spend thousands and thousands on that perfect yorkie...you should be able to find a reputable breeder that will sell you a yorkie for the amount you have to offer. Just keep searching.. I got BOTH of my babies...for $500.00 each!! And both are perfect and healthy!

| As disgusting as what you saw was maybe it was a good thing for the animals since you are trying to report it. I'm not sure how to either but I would try contacting your local Humane Society, PETA, ASPCA, etc. They may be able to point you in the right direction. Good luck finding your puppy. I would't pay the thousands breeders want for the "teacup" size I really wanted but I finally found my Chloe Primrose. She's not the "teacup" size but is small and I couldn't love her more. Keep looking and you'll find your perfect pup. I did! |

| You will find your perfect puppy!! I did not spend thousands of dollars, and I found my perfect baby! I got Marley from a wonderful breeder for $400. Yes to me $400 is still a bit much, but it is WAY better than $2500. He was also a very healthy puppy, and the breeder even called me to check up on him. And he is not a large yorkie either. I think someone mentioned that you can get a yorkie for a cheaper price but they will be large, that is not true. Marley is around 4lbs. So just wait, do your research and your puppy will come. Try looking in your local adds, see if this makes a difference. Good Luck And as far reporting puppy mills, can you contact your local news station? Will they call the puppy mills out? I don't know, but I think if more people know about it the more likely the problem will get sloved. I also found this website: New Page 1 Hope it helps! |

| Just got off the phone with NJSPCA. It was a very nice lady I spoke with and she said they would send someone out to investigate. I feel much better. Although I have to wonder what the minimum requirement is for puppy care in a pet store. I have a disgusting feeling that the second disgusting puppy store may have met those requirements. I can't imagine that all these stores exist... and all appear to be unclean and filled with mill pups... and aren't meeting the minimum requirements. I hope they shut them all down! BASTARDS!!! |

| Our Kennel We bought our yorkie puppy from a Kennel in Paradise Pennsylvania and it was not an Amish puppy mill. The kennel name is Forrest Ridge Forest Ridge Kennels and they could not have been nicer. The owner even gave us his cell phone to call if we needed him at anytime. We had been looking for a while and visited them about 3 times before we bough our yorkie in October. While visiting we met people from different states who will only buy a dog from Forrest Ridge. We paid $950 for our puppy and we got him in October. He had all his vaccinations and we got all of his papers. I hope this is helpful. |

well, i meant it as in perfect puppies according to the breed standard. because a pet owners eyes and dog judges eyes are different. most "show quality" dogs are uber expensive mickey is 9lbs (def big according to the standard) but i think mickey is perfect beyond perfect and even if someone offered millions i would not sell him EVER though he was $400 to buy | |

| Just do your homework!!!!! Puppymills will sometimes have "designer' breeds, advertise Yorkies as teacups or teddybears for more $$, Sell many types of breeds... and have many of them. I am sorry to say I did look up the website of Forest Ridge Kennel (the one mentioned earlier with such good comments) and I really think that it IS a puppymill. Here is a list of the dogs that they have available. This is what was advertised: We carry many popular pet breeds such as: Beagle Bulldog Cairn Terrier Boston Terrier Chihuahua Cocker Spaniel Cockapoo Dachshund Fox Terrier German Shepherd Golden Retriever Jack Russell Labrador Retriever Lhasa Apso Miniature Pinscher Miniature Schnauzer Papillon Pomeranian Poodle Pug Rottweiler Siberian Husky Shetland Sheepdog Shiba Inu Shih-Tzu Springer Spaniel West Highland White Terrier (Westie) Yorkshire Terrier (Yorkie) Poodle Mixes These Breeds are always available and ready for a caring home! Not Good!!!!
