Being I am a first time owner of a dog I wasn't sure what I was suppose to do as for as nail trimming, ear hair, etc. I couldn't stand the fact that I would have done something wrong on my own and hurt my baby.. So I decided to take her to Petsmart. When I walked in I should have known something wasn't right, the workers there seemed so unprofessional! There was one dog getting its ear hair trimmed, and she was yelping, now I don't know if its suppose to be this way or not, but again being a first time owner I asked the woman "Is that dog ok?". I explained to the woman what I wanted. she told me to leave "Madea" and come back in 2 hrs to pick her up. After I left I ran a few errands but something wasn't feeling right...after about an hour of kicking the feeling around , just decided to call and tell me that I was on my way back. The person that answered the phone told me ok that Madea was ready. When I went inside to get Madea I thought I was going to pass out! They had my baby on the FLOOR PLAYING with something that was suppose to be a toy, in a PILE OF DOG HAIR! other DOGS HAIR.... she handed her to me and they had put a bow in the top of her hair, the bow they used was the rubberband type, they had this bow so TIGHT on my Madea's head that when I went to touch the bow Madea pulled away from my hand and yelped which told me it was entirely too tight! I asked the woman why did they put that bow in, considering I didn't ask for one? She stated that all Yorkies wear bows! Again I said I didn't ask for one... The next thing this woman did was the WRONG thing for her to do! She reached out and RANKED the bow out of my dogs head! ... Madea yelped and when I looked she had a bald spot where that bow was! That was it for me, I kindly handed Madea to my husband, and I showed her how it felt to have hair ripped out of her head! Yes that move landed me a nice trip to the Metro Court house but I would do it again! when I went to court I told the judge what happened & that I would do it again! Needless to say I don't go to Petsmart anymore! and I bet you the next time that woman decides to pull a dogs hair she will remember what it feels like.... This situation is what landed me here at YT..... I decided that just because someone says they are groomers doesn't always mean they are the right groomer... Since I've found someone that lets me stay with Madea while she is working on her, but for anyone I suggest reading everything about the place your considering! The BBB should have information on major places like Petsmart....

OMG!!! I would have done the same thing. And glady would have gotten arrested and went to court. I dont advocate violence but, how dare she snatch that out the furbabies head like that. I love my Paris too much to have someone abuse her in anyway. I did take her to PS 2 months ago and i was not happy and plan to never take her back. I think i need to learn how to groom her myself, thats the only way to be sure.

I know this is not a funny situation but, I had to laugh when I read your post. It reminds me of me.
So far I have been in court twice over my oldest baby. The first time, I had to fight the breeder for his papers.
The second time, the grommer cut him on his belly. He didn't act right when I picked him up. When I took him outside to get him the car, I thought maybe he just needs to use the bathroom. When I put him down he screamed like I hurt him. When I looked he had a very large cut. I was PISSED! I went right back in and asked her what she had done and she tried to say she didn't know what I was talking about...Yeah right!
I grabbed her by the hair and stuck her noise right to his belly and said "now do you know?" I told her she was paying his vet bills and giving me my money back for the grooming.
I left and went straight to the vet. She sued me for the grooming bill...lol When I told the judge what happened and showed him the pictures and vet bill, he kind of laughed and said I got lucky she didn't have me arrested. But, she did not get the money and ended up paying the vet bill.
the Judge was probably right but, I was so upset that anyone would hurt my baby. But, I think I was madder because she didn't tell me. Max could have gotten very sick!

I am so sorry to hear of your tragic loss. How horrible, for something like this to happen. But even worse to be treated like you were the one who did something wrong. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Im glad that im not only one that will go bonkers for my furbaby. I have 3 kids and Paris makes 4 and will go to bat for any and all of them. Rightfully what the groomer should have done is inform you and not charge you, then give you some complimentary groomings at least. This way she could have shown herself to be a true professional. I did have a groomer once cut my babys foot and she told me as soon as i walked in the door, and refused to take payment and insisted i have the vet look at it at her expense to make sure it was ok. Now thats good customer service. Many groomers get tons of business by word of mouth, so give bad service and that can spread like wildfire. Too bad this groomer didnt think that way. Its common sense to me.

At around 2:15pm I received a call from Petsmart informing me that my teacup yorkie (Bella) had just been bitten by a husky. I immediately rushed back to Petsmart but upon arrival, the grooming manager Jennifer informed me that Bella had been sent to Banfield hospital located in the store for medical attention. The scenery when I arrived to Banfield was unbearable. Bella had an oxygen mask on and was fighting for survival. Jennifer then rest Bella in my arms but all I can hear was the squirming cry from my poor dog. The doctors advise me to have Bella transfer immediately to an emergency vet hospital for further assistance. Apparently Banfield does not have the apprioate equipment to save Bella. Banfield offered to have an ambulance transport Bella to SFVS but it will take 2 hours before an ambulance can arrive. Bella cannot wait 2 hours! I took matters into my own hands and drove Bella to SFVS myself. On my way to SFVS, Bella was consistently gasping for air and saliva began to drool from her mouth like the symptom of a seizure. These last no more than 5 minutes before she stopped breathing. Bella was rushed into the ER when I arrived at SFVS. It took no more than 2 minutes before the doctor announced that he was unable to revive her.
Petsmart is a big company so how something like this can possibly happens under their supervision. I have asked repeatedly for a statement from Petsmart in regards to the events that have led to this tragedy. Instead of getting any cooperation, I was asked to come back tomorrow. Petsmart only inform me that everything is confidently among Petsmart and their cooperate office. They will not release any information. The district manager was very unprofessional for not even taking anything under his or his staff’s responsibility. He gave me a stupid example (if you where driving on a freeway and if a rock come towards you, you would not be able to react-saying if a dog jumps to bite another dog you can’t react fast enough) which is a ridiculous example! The dogs were supervised under their control which means they are fully responsible. I also over heard that the owner of the husky had already told them to keep the husky away from other dogs. If you were to search under DOG OWNERS SUING PETSMART!!
I pleading that you guys put this on the air because I want people to know about it and to be more cautious about how dogs are handled and that they should always pay special attention to one dog at a time. This has happened more than once and they should take this more seriously.

OMG I just read this and I'm appalled, devastated, and shocked. I've actually taken all my dogs there for a haircut prior to my hubby graciously taken over that chore. I wonder why the OP hasn't returned to answer any questions. I'm curious to know any results. Never again will I take my dogs there.

This is horrible and should have never happened. I am so sorry for your loss. my heart goes out to you.
And this is so scary because I take my baby to petco. I was taking her to petsmart but it seemed that they were mean to her because she always came home looking scared and tramatized and she was never completely clean.
I hope you get justice. This was completely horrible.

This is HORRIBLE! I am so sorry for the lose of your puppy.

Petsmart groomers are HORRIBLE! They killed by friends dog too! It happened a few years ago but it still happened! She dropped her off perfectly healthy and was called a few hours later to come back to the store and they told her the dog was DEAD! They did treat her better afterward and offered a new puppy but she still had a dead dog after a grooming at Petsmart. I have told the story before of how they treated Pebbles when she was a puppy. I would not recommend anyone using them. BTW these were 2 different stores in different states that these happened at.

Honestly, I do not think it is actually the "petsmart" that is killing these dogs .It is the people resonsible for them ! We trust our groomers and leave them in the hands of people who are suppose to be professionals. That is the problem. It is nearly impossible to tell if the person will be cautious and loving towards our pets!
YES, things happen and tragidies occur. However, to say it is all Petsmart groomers is not a fair statement. Like any profession there are going to be peolpe far more better then others, far more concerned and careful for the safety and well being of animals.
The place I have taken Suzi is a Petsmart. Before even considering leaving her there I observed the groomers carefully... There behavior, there techniques and watched them like a hawk on serveral occasions .
i found one groomer very good. He gentle and careful. He was exceptional. And a few other groomers were too. I stayed there and watched when Suzi was groomed the first time... The second time I was able to leave and the groomer told me what a well behave, wonderful little dog she is , there were no problems what so ever. It is like leaving my child on the first day on preschool. Very nerve racking for me to have my beloved Yorkie groomed and to leave.
What I am trying to get my point accross , it is not always the place , but the actual people handeling and grooming! They are NOT always terrible and horrible.
I know there is always exceptions , and we need to be very cautious who we as owners allow handeling our precious yorkies. Perhaps I just fot lucky at a petsmart.

You should talk to a lawyer, don't let this go because through your efforts, you can create a safer environment for future dogs that are groomed at Petsmart. If they are sued, you can bet they will put policies in place to prevent this from happening again. I have not been pleased with Petsmart groomers either, and have gone to different Petsmarts locations and found the same problem at all of them. The attitudes of the groomers are unprofessional, non-caring and they do, in my opinion, poor quality work. It's worth it to find a groomer that you like just as you would do for your own hair stylist. Maybe get some referrals from other dog owners.

Also for the "hair yanker" sorry you ended up in court, but 3 thumbs up to you!! You go girl!!! Yep that groomer will think twice before yanking a bow out of a dog's head!! thanks for the chuckle too!!

I am glad you have had a good experience with your Petsmart groomer, but from what I have experience, he is rare. Petsmart is responsible, because they have a responsibility to ensure that the groomers are properly trained, they also have a responsiblity to put policies in place to ensure the safety of the animals.

I took my girl to Petsmart when I first got her. It was my first time and I was really excited to see her so I stood outside the window watching. The manager came out and asked me to leave saying they didn't allow the owners to watch because it excited the dogs. I really felt I was far enough away and don't believe she could see me. I was very offended and wonder if there's a reason they don't want owners watching. I'm not taking her anywhere that they aren't confident enough to have me watch them work with her. This thread makes me grateful I made that decision.

Im so sorry this has happened to you and your little Bella. I am in tears for you, I am so sorry. I would definitely consider taking advice from a lawyer, if that is the route you want to go.

I do not take my Bella to the Petsmart/co groomers anymore, and now I am thankful for my decision.
