| I have a dilemma and need input from anyone with experience like my problem: My little Elvis is 8 months old. My husband and I are both retired, so we're with Elvis almost 24/7. I realize that we have contributed to this problem I am about to describe. When we want to go out to eat or to run errands together, we leave Elvis behind. We've tried crating him, but upon our return, we have a marathon poop cleaning because he has pooped all in his crate! Now we have tried just leaving him loose in the house on one level. We have down his pee pad, water, bed, etc. When we leave he does use the pee pad, but he always poops. I have tried leaving him in the laundry room with door closed...another marathon cleaning...so will never do that again! While I was visiting my daughter last week, my husband stayed behind with Elvis. He told me that when he went outside to do yard work, Elvis barked the entire time. So I just conducted an experiment with Elvis that failed: Husband had to go to a dr appt, so we set up everything for Elvis like we were both going away, however, I stayed behind...hung out in the garage and just outside the garage, no way could Elvis see me. For 10 minutes he barked running throughout the house. I gave up and went in to calm him and yes, again, he had pooped (4th time that day, but really loose). We want to go on vacation and take Elvis with us, but what do we do about leaving him in the condo while we go to the beach or out to eat? We do not want to be evicted due to the constant barking. Can someone please advise me? Thank you so much!

Missing Yoshi Everyday! Donating Member | i hope someone can help you..i am not resorting back to crate training for MeiLing and Kioko...my others have turned out wonderful from crate training...and i feel as if I have been too easy with these last 2...and the first several day and night they cry while be in the the crate...well last night was a miracle...not one sound found all night until my alarm clock went off...i couldn't be more happier...hehe...i guess what i am getting at is that they will get use to it... another battle and i am fight is kioko is not pottying outside like the rest of them...he is holding it in until he comes in and get crate...but my theory of being consistant will pay off i hope like it did with the others...good luck!

I typed in "dog separatrion anxiety" and lots of sites came up. but it is not a quick fix. It will take time. For this trip, you might want to leave him behind. it sounds like he would be happier in a boarding kennel than being left alone in the condo.

| I don't think there's a 'quick fix' to your problem. If you're planning on a vacation soon, you may want to consider having him baby-sat while you're gone. When we had our first Yorkie, he was fine when we were gone to work as that was what he was used to. Every time we had a little extra time off, however, he would poop the house up the first day we went back to work. Our solution was to get a second Yorkie. |

| Instead of letting your guy run free on one level, have you thought about using an xpen? It won't help with the separation anxiety but it is much better than a crate. Scooter did not bond with a crate, no matter what I tried, but he really like the xpen. I bought mine at Walmart for under $50 and with it, he has the run of my kitchen. The placement also helps him see out the backdoor so he can see me coming and going. It has helped him understand that I will come back and he can watch me as soon as I pull up. I also leave a few safe toys out for him so he can play while I am gone. As far as the separation anxiety, maybe work with a trainer who can show you various ways to help him. Good luck!

We also ended up getting an RV....now we just do take out, and take the babies to the beach with us. Solved our problem.

| Bernie had separation anxiety bad, so that's when we got Baxter. Bernie then became cool with staying at home because he had Baxter. Now Baxter has separation anxiety much worse than Bernie did. Can't win!

| I feel for you. Buddy had seperation anxiety bad also. I purchased a couple gadgets that were suppose to help. I had a barking unit/ run by batteries,on the table. Did nothing. It gave out a high pitch noise that only the dog could here when he barked. I guess he barked so loud he never heard it. I then bought a plug in that is suppose to emmit the order of the mother, thus relaxing the puppy. Not sure if that helped but used it for a couple of months. Whenever I closed the door and he barked I went back inside to reprimand him. There were times I was all the way out to my car and I could hear him and I had to go back up because I live in a condo and didn't want to disturb anyone. The only relief I finally got was coin's in a can. That has been the best deterent that has ever worked for him. He never pottied in the house after being trained. However he did throw up from stress. To this day he scratches the front door trying to get to me when I leave and he's 4 1/2. I have repaired the door many times and today I purchased a brass foot plate that I will attach with double sided tape to keep him from damaging the door more after it is repaired again this weekend. They do eventually outgrow it but never completely. There is no quick fix I"m afraid. I think the x-pen is a great idea. I never knew about them when he was a pup. He always jumped the 32" gate so I used two! Hang in there it will get better as he get's older. Let him bark when you leave and shake that can for all it's worth. It will frighten him, it should anyhow. I would never use those citronella spray collars. You could also stand outside and blow a whistle everytime he barked. But that might scare the poop out of him too. I wish you good luck, don't give in you can do it. Exercise is also key. Give him a good walk right before you leave and make him poop. That should help. |

| I wouldn't advise taking him with you until his problem is taken care of, or unless you only go places where he can go so as not to leave him in the condo alone, which would not work out. I see another problem as well with so much pooping. My bet is he is eating kibble. What ever brand he is eating, it's nothing but filler regardless of what the bag says. There is no way a dog can poop that many times a day unless his food is all filler and just going straight out the other end. Have you considered home cooking? I have three Yorkster girls that I cook for and give them 1/4 cup each twice a day at the same times each day and they poop right on schedule mostly once a day around 7 am, and if they have had a home made bone during the day, or a light lunch of yogurt & fruit, then they sometimes go again before bedtime. Breaking seperation anxiety is not hard to do, but it will take both you and your husband to train at the same time. Good luck, and have a great time on your vacation.

| I truly appreciate all the replies and advice. It gives me things to think on and plan my strategy. I'm thinking if I can find an exer-pen that only has straight up and down bars, it might work, otherwise, he'd just climb out of it (the little stinker). I would just love love having one more yorkie, but can't afford the vet bills and food since we're on fixed incomes now. I have begun to feed NV raw medallions and NV kibble. I have been letting him free feed on the kibble, so need to fix that with a scheduled feeding time for kibble only and then the mix of the medallion with a little kibble at his usual supper time. You guys are really great to have responded and so timely too. Thank you very much! I'll take all the advice to heart.

| I too think it might be separation anxiety. It takes time to get them over that and very gradually. We had a yellow lab with separation anxiety and we started by leaving the house for a minute or two and come back then five minutes, 15 minutes, etc. until we could leave for a couple hours at least. She was so bad that she clawed up all the interior doors because they panic and want to get out to look for their master(s). Sometimes medication is required too but I like to try other training methods first. Also, it is good advice to consider another dog for a playmate if that is a possiblity for you. |

FYI - Raw and Kibble should NOT be fed at the same time. Kibble takes too long to digest, and when fed together the kibble sticks to the raw, not allowing the raw to digest and go through the process, so the raw then actually sits longer while the kibble is breaking down and that's when bacteria can grow on it.
