| crate and xpen issue We have our 12 week old male in an xpen w/his crate during the day when he can not be watched, and at night. I have papers set up at one end, and his crate at the other. Now, he stands on the crate, and jumps over the pen to get out. I don't like him doing the (for obvious reasons) so I took the crate out. He likes to sleep in it, but can't use it. Any ideas? He will also use the papers to pee sometimes overnight or if left alone, but poo still goes on the floor of the pen, even when the papers are clean. He mainly goes outdoors during the day, it is just the one or two days of the week I have to be away for 2-4hrs that he is in the pen. Should I move to crate training? Does he still need to go out every 2 hours? Thanks, Liz |

| crate You could take the top off the crate and use the bottom as his bed. That way he wont have anything to climb up on. Just a thought, Lynn |

| 12 weeks is really early to be concerned too much, you just need to be consistent. It is confusing for them to be trained to go outside and at the same time to be trained to go inside on potty pads. I struggle with the same thing. Mine go outside 95% of the time, but I still keep some pads both upstairs and downstairs and they occasionally use them as well. When using the x-pen I used a vinyl tablecloth or shower curtain to protect the floor or carpet, then put the crate in one corner, potty pads in another, food in another and a play are in the last corner. When my babies were smaller (birth to about 8 weeks, I always kept a sheet covering the top to keep in the warmth. I just used clothespins all around. Then I took off the sheet, but it wasn't long until Rainbow started climbing out. She didn't even have to use the crate to get out.... she climbed the corners while poor little Beamer sat there and watched but couldn't figure out how to do it himself lol. So I started putting the sheet on top again with the clothespins and she no longer could climb out. I didn't let the side hang down because I wanted it to appear open to them so they could see everything going on in the house. I just folded the sheet so it fit and pinned it with clothespins and it worked like a charm. Sonya

| If you are gone for only 2-4 hours one to two days a week, it will be ok to crate him only. Make sure you have him potty before you put him in and go potty as soon as you get home. This will teach him to hold it. No food or water in the crate while you are gone. Make sure the crate is only big enough for him to turn around and lay down. If you have to, use boxes or books or things to block off the rest of the crate to make it smaller.

| The crate won't hurt him for that short amount of time, and will help in potty training.

| Good Luck Can't you make the walls of the x pen far enough from the crate inside that he can't get to them. I do that by using a wall as one side of the x pen. |

| Hi Liz, When you take your puppy out of the x-pen, do you pick him up and out of the x-pen? If you pick him up from the pen to get him out, he'll think up is the way out of the pen, and hence try to jump out on his own. Similarly, if you instead lift the pen to get him out, he'll try to dig. The proper way to let him out of the pen is the "door style" in-and-out, instead of up&above or down&below. Once you get him used to go in and out of the pen through the door/gate, he probably won't try to jump out of the pen. Or, if you have never picked him up to take him out of the pen, he's already outsmarted me =) |

| Hello all, thanks for the responses. Yes, I do lift him out of the Xpen. He is placed in the living room on a piece of linoleum we bought/cut to fit the pen. I think he jumps out to find us, as it is usually when my husband leaves for work in the morning. What about overnight? How long can/should he be in the crate overnight? Maybe we should paper train? During the day, he goes out and will "go", but he will also use the paper. My husband wants him trained to go outside, but I myself hate taking him out at night (as do my 12 and 14yr old) because we live in a very dark, wooded area with bears and coyote. I'm a chicken!! He is very smart, and has mastered basic commands; come, sit, down, off. I can't imagine that he wouldn't catch on to potty training if I could get my act together. Is it ok if he uses paper at night when we are sleeping? BTW, The crate was placed in the middle of the pen, maybe 5-6 inches on each side. He actually PUSHED it closer to the edge, and jumped over. He was very happy with himself when I came around the corner. He tried the same thing with a new empty litter box that I put his blanket in so he had a place to sleep, he tried to push it and climbed in, but could not reach the edge! He sleeps in that now, but he was mad, biting at the edge of it and all. So, at 12 weeks, he can "hold it" for 3hrs? Thanks again, Liz |

| Oh, btw again, we tried to have him in the kitchen with his crate and papers using baby gates, but we have an autistic son who in constantly running through the gates and opening them. Also, we spend more time in the living room at night. I would love to move the whole pen into my daughter's room at night, when he is a little older so that he is not alone at night. Will there ever be a day he can sleep in his crate or in a room with one of us? Will he need to go out in the middle of the night once he gets bigger? I would be afraid of what might be in our yard that could harm him at night, even with the yard being fenced in. Our old dog scared away more than one bear in her life! Thanks again Liz |

| You have a smart baby! Congratulations. It will get better. Promise. Potty training problems are more often than not "our" problems. Mine are paper trained & outdoor trained both. We're still working on Coby. One thing that we do is also put them on a lead outdoors that is hooked right by the door. They're not left outdoors unattended, but after dark in my jammies, if they won't come in, I can "reel them in" with the lead. There is a formula that tells how long they can hold it by weight or age, but I don't remember it. Maybe someone else will. But Coby was getting to the "hold it all night" stage at about your baby's age, sleeping in a small crate right next to my bed (he did that from the first night). During the day, he holds it for 4 hours (I am lucky to come home for lunch). Good Luck and let us know how it goes!!

| Spike HATES going out at night. I have to walk out into the middle of the lawn with him while he pulls to go back inside the whole time. When do you use the papers? Does he use a 2hr in crate type of schedule? I know this works well, but when he comes out after 2hrs (well,we were using 1 1/2 hr schedule), he gets a little crazy. I let him run around the living room this morning for 20 min after he "goes" outside, and after 10min he started to poo on the rug! I tried to pick him up and run outside (which is not easy with baby gates and child locks on the door to keep my son in), saying NO the whole way, but he continued and left a trail. Then what do I do with him? He did nothing outside, so does he go back in the crate? Sorry for all the questions. Thanks |

There are a lot of different methods for the crate training. It's hard to give them play time AND know when they have to potty. It was easier for me because he'd be out of his crate in the kitchen with papers available. If you want to outdoor potty train only, I suck at that. Takes time to get the schedule. One person suggested to me that when they start to poop, to scoop them up and push their little tail down - it makes them stop going. That did work for me and gave me time to get Coby where I wanted him to finish going. Just keep asking questions!!
