That's a good idea. But it's still not a typical "den" for him. I can't help much because we just crate train. Coby's x-pen is the entire kitchen gated off. When we're not watching him closely, he's in the kitchen. When we're watching him closely, we're increasing his freedom one room at a time. When we're gone, he's in his (small) crate and loves it. When I grab my keys he scoots into his crate (and always gets a treat) OR if I put my puppy purse on the floor, he jumps in that.
