| I just want to say that i feel everyones frustrations here. My four month old was left out today (in the laundry room which is his) instead of in his crate which is kept in there also. My husband decided to let him stay out when he left even though he didnt go potty outside before leaving and needless to say he had his first accident in there,,,,,#1 and #2. I was soooo mad when i got home and he was out.....first of all I stepped on him (but he was fine) and then I stepped in his pee. I'm afraid that now he has gone in there he will think he can go if ever left out again (which will not happen anytime soon). Crate training is working well...just wondering if he will ever let us know he has to go when outside of the crate (he barks when he has to go when he is in the crate). So glad we have these forums to vent!!! |

| Day four of Yorkie LOCKDOWN!!!! The girls are Pissed!!! But getting the idea!!! If they want to play!!! They have to PEE AND POO!!!! lol And once they do.... the DOO!!! They get a half and hour of free time to eat and drink and play!!! Then its back in the crates!!! I'm going to start extending their play/outside time slowly.... as not to have them notice this!! So far... its working like a charm!!! First major road block??? Pixies MAJOR BARKING ISSUE!!!! She barked for 6 hours non stop!!!! She was killing me!!!!!!! Then my sister in law came over and gave me the 10 cents speech... I thought she was full of it!!!! WRONG!!!!! Best 10 cents I ever spent!!! Pixie has not barked in 3 days!!! Well maybe a tiny test now and then... but a quick correction with the can and its done!!! Works like a charm!!! And to think.. i was ready to throw in the towel!!!! I am a believer now!!!!!! So... for you who have done the strict crate training.... how do you transition from crate to free dog... who is crated when your gone and at night..... but has freedom during the day when your home....????? How long? how'd ya do it????? Help me out! And keep in mind... mine are a year old!

Thanks! I'm going to start the doggie boot camp tonight. Could be pretty interesting... we're lucky though because 90% of our house is 2' x 2' stone tile except for the bedrooms. So cleanup is easy.

| Its funny, because its nothing new... and I've read it here a thousand times and thought.... yeah right! That will NEVER work on my dogs! Ha! Well.... Her name is Cary.... She walked in and was Horrified when she realized that the barking was coming from my house!!! And once inside she was like... WTF?!?!?!?! She asked me if I drank coke?? I said NO! WHY?? (I was yelling cause Pixie was barking so flippen loud!!!!) She said she needed a can.... A can?? Then I told her that I was almost done with a sugar free Red Bull... I was hoping to sprout wings so I could fly somewhere quiet! lol She said pound it and rinse it out! So I did! And then she asked me for 10 pennies! 10 pennies....... then it hit me....... she was making on of those racket can things...... What a total waste of time!!!!!!!!! This was never going to work!!!! But it would be really funny to watch her FAIL! So I played along!!!! All this time Pixie is Barking like a dog possessed!!!! You would have thought we were dangling a kitten outside her crate!!! it was BAD!!! So we stuffed all ten pennies in the tall slender can.... and used a few strips of packing tape to seal the deal... and ta da!!!!! it was done!!!! The ten cent can of doom! or Cary's Big embarrassment!!! I was sure the latter of the two was going to be the title for sure!!! She "instructed" me on its use! "Now Kathryn, all you have to do is say... in a very calm but firm voice.... NO BARKING! and then give the can ONE VIOLENT shake! I'm serious... give it a really good up and quick jerk down! not a bunch of rattling around... just an up and DOWN! its the down crash that will jolt the daylights out of them!!!" so...... I said it and I jerked that can and Pixie and Paris looked at me like I grew a second head! Andthey were quiet for 5 minutes! then paris started and pixie was a second behind her... so from the other room, I picked up the can and called out "no barking!" and gave my can ONE SHAKE! and 20 minutes of silence followed! the next streach was 3 hours! Its day 4 and I have not shaken the can once today!!! In fact the UPS guy knocked like the POLICE! on my door today and pix made a gruff like she was almost going to bark and I looked at her and said no barking... and she stopped.... I opened the door and signed for the envelope... my ups guy said... I was expecting the dogs to be barking.... I told him that they are listening now... he looked shocked! it was so cool!!!!! I am amazed!!!! Seriously! I was going to have Pixie DEBARKED 6 months ago! It was that bad!!!! Who would have thought 10 pennies could change my life like this??? they are totally different dogs!!! Just a warning.... they will totally recoil when they hear the noise... they DON"T LIKE IT!!!! but you won't have to do it for very long... 4 days later all I have to say is no barking... But the can is handy, just in case... And don't over use it... you don't want to lose the effectiveness.... Thus, only one powerful shake! Kathryn

| Now that I think back... the reason I never thought this worked was this old lady across the streed who had min pins... two of them... they nipped and bit!! one drew blood on me once... little devle dogs they were... well she had those classic coke cans with pennies in them all over her house... and she would shake the sh*t out of them constantly!!! while the dogs barked and jumped and she yelled! it was a flippen circus!!!! Sometimes I think she drove those dogs nuts and other times I think they drove her nuts... then I realized it was the Vodka on the rocks that got her and every now and then you'd catch those dogs drinking straight out of her glass! That can't be good for them! No wonder they were all so whacked out! I can see why the husband went early!!! I'd want out!!!!!! Yikes! Don't over use that can... or the Vodka!

You can get slip leads from www.petedge.com I would not allow them the run of the house. mine are confined to the kitchen for most of the day. They are only in the living room for a couple of hours at night. I know it's frustrating, but they really are not trying to piss you off. they just are not getting the message. Going out with them and praising is excellent advice, but it's only half the battle. They will learn that it is good to go outside, but not that it is not good to go inside. For that part you have to keep their space limited, so you can keep any eye on then and scold when you catch them in the act. The good news is, that at their age, one or two days of constant watching and they will begin to catch on quickly. You can also try doggie boot camp, and keep them leased to you constantly for a few days, so there is no chance of them making a mistake without you catching it. Good Luck BTW It's good to see you back on here posting away. | |
