| Litter Box training Comments Hi. I have tried to read a lot of the other threads about housetraining, but let me also tell you all my story. Paisley is 1 1/2 years old and still hasn't been fully trained. He is able to hold it while we are at work, but when we are home he will still have accidents that we don't always catch (bad us). we do smell it though. I have read that you can litter train a dog and still have it go outside. I just feel that I want to litter train Paisley b/c I won't feel as bad when we are out of the house, and I want him to have a place to do in the house. Did I mention he wakes up 85% of the time at 2am to have to go??? my husband and I switch off taking him out, but I would like to not have too. So, any thoughts on litter box training? He is not crate trained, but stays in a bathroom when we are away. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks! Paisley's mom Stephanie |

| Litter box training is the best thing we've ever done. Oliver our 1 1/2 yr old yorkie, and he's been trained since we brought him home. For us it's really very convenient. It's nice to know he has a place to go when we're not home, and we don't have to worry about him holding it in so long that he's having accidents around the house. It's especially nice in the winter time. I'm not so sure how it would be for a large breed dog. But for a small dog like Oliver, the messes are small too, so it's easy to clean up. |

| Dudley and Mitchell are both litter box trained and also go outside. It is the best way for my dogs, since I live in a RV fulltime. When I'm at work they use the litterbox and when I am home I take them outside to go. For me it is the way to go. |

| well so far the purina litter has been a waste because kenny likes to EAT EVERYTHING..soi am puttinga puppy pad in it..i was using paper..but the SMELL . He took to it right away ..its been two weeks and thursday he started standing half in and half out 8 times out of 10..i dont know why. but then he started playing with the pads..after he pooped of course so now i have the pads taped in until my Wiz DOG(puppy toilet) type thing arrives next week from target .com. u may want to get some wee pad drops or spray to attract the dog at 1st to the pad..even though they are scented sometimes the dog needs more. i would love to use something other than pads..but again he puts everything in his mouth. good luck..do a search on litter boxes in the forum..others use them.

| Litter box training was the best thing we did. Well we didn't really have a choice seeing as though we got him in December and he weighed 2 lbs. Not the best conditions to take him out in. But I will be the first to admit that it was a FULL TIME JOB trying to teach him. You can't take your eyes off the little guy. But eventually they get it. And I admit, he still has his accidents, still misses sometimes, but you'll find your own groove eventually and figure out what works for you. But the best part is not having to worry about taking him out when I know I'm going to be gone for a while. I've been several places with friends where they have had to leave and go let the dogs out or wake up at 3 am to let them out. My little guy sleeps with me and gets up by himself almost every night, runs downstiars, pees, comes back and goes right back to sleep. It's the best thing ever. When I go to sleep I shut all the other doors except mine and the bathroom where his pad is to make sure he doesn't go anywhere else. It's not an easy thing to do as you can tell by the many frustrated threads on it, but I am 100% happy that we did it. |

| I think crating is a good way to start since there's too much room to potty in a corner in the bathroom whereas in a crate, they'll hold it since they don't want to mess their dens. I tried a litter box but she only goes in it 25% of the time so I gave up on that and went with just pads when we're not home and going outside when we are. We're also in works with training her to use the bells to let us know.

| week 1! I have just started litter training my puppy and so far so good. I suggest that you confine the dog to a small area until she/he's going consistently in the litter box, than open up the area. I don't let the dog play outside her "area" until she's gone potty. The website for purina litter has some videos and a printable training schedule that I use. |

| I've tried the purina dog litter, too, and either I'm not getting it right, or Max just isn't interested. LOL I followed the instructions to the letter, but Max will not step foot in the box! The purina litter is HUGE, too, the pieces almost as big around as Max's leg! We're still using the pads, which is working well, it's just expensive.

| purina litter Well, lexy was first pad trained, and then after she was doing that more or less consistently, I put out the purina litter. BUT, the difference is that I would tape the pad into the litter box, and add only a little bit of the litter. So she would go in the box on top of the pee pad, and I would increase the amount of litter gradually. She's pretty good about going poo in the box, but she still goes pee on a pee pad I leave outside. I think I'm going to gradually reduce the amount of area of the pee pad outside. Although they have a few sizes of litter boxes, I wish I had gotten the miniature size one as opposed to the toy sized one. I think dogs need more of an area to sniff around before they potty, no matter how small they are. |
