| Adjusting to the crate ? We just got Bailey on Tuesday and with our other dogs, we've always crate trained them. I really want to crate train Bailey, but he isn't taking to well to it. When we put him in there at night (after he's gone potty and is all tuckered out) he cries & cries. He wakes us up in the middle of the night to go potty - which he is taken outside to do his business and then put back in his crate. How long should it take for him to get used to the 'routine?' Our other dogs cried for maybe the first night and then they were fine. |

| My puppy did this too... Tinkerbell is 9 weeks old and has only been with us since last saturday. She was up crying/screaming every night in her crate every two hours for 4 days straight. We have close neighbors and I had one lady express to me that her 2 year old son has been waking because of the dog crying at night and what was I doing to our dog? I felt really bad. So I decided to cover her crate with a blanket so she couldn't see me and every time she would high pitch scream I would shake a can with pennies in it. I hope this doesn't sound cruel but I only had to do that 4 times one night and now there's no sound out of her from 10 at night until 6 in the morning for the last 2 days. And she actually seems to snuggle right down and go to sleep when I put her in it too when before she would scratch and scream and get totally hyper in her crate. Hope this helps. Jodi |

| Do you put Bailey in the crate at other times during the day, besides when it's time to sleep?? You might want to put him in the crate when you're around too, doing things so he doesn't always associate the crate with you not being around. If he cries when you put him in there, don't let him out until he stops. And the penny thing sounds like a good idea. I have an empty bottle of water with a few pennies in it on the coffee table and I shake it if he does something I don't want him to do and he won't stop when I tell him no. Also, try putting an old shirt or something of yours that has your scent on the crate to comfort him. Good luck and keep with it. I swear by crate training!!

| Crate training Do you think the crate trining is better than using a pen? My little one has been sleeping in her crate, which is open and in her pen. SHe has been getting up in the middle of the night and using her pad and then going back to sleep. No crying or anything. Do you think it is still better to go back to the crate? But, can they hold it all night when they are under 2 lbs? - Kathy Quote:

| crate I agree that you should put her in during the day, when you are around also , put a pee pee pad (if u have the room for it) this will cover night accidents , I always put toys or treat and leave the door open, while am home , he goes in and out of it,and he realize that the crate is a safe comfy place, not the scary cold, dark box we put him in at night . |

| My puppy would cry every night when I put him in the crate, sleep for about four hours, get up to go out, cry again and then only sleep for another two hours or so. I was exhausted! I kept thinking - you wanted a puppy and you got one. lol He sleeps next to my bed so I would let him know I was right there and then I would ignore him. It sounds harsh but it only made him cry more when I would do anything else. I thought about just letting him sleep on the bed with me but he was so small I knew I would get even less sleep worrying about rolling over on him. It lasted for about three months but now he sleeps fine. I also put a blanket over the crate and that did help. Good luck.

| I actually don't think you should put a pee pad in the crate though. But of course it's up to you. The point of crate training is trying to teach them how to control their bladder. And the crate is supposed to be a place that they do not want to eliminate in.

Yes, he's in there when I leave or when I'm trying to clean, ect when I can't watch him. I'm sure the reason he cries is because he wants to be out with me playing, it's just that none of the other dogs I've crate trained have taken more than a day or two to get used to it. I'll try the shirt trick | |

| Crating Thanks for the replies. SO my question still is. (situation first) I have been keeping my little one (1 1/2lb) in a pen during the day(when at work or needing to put her in a safe spot) and for sleep time. She has a wee wee pad (actually 2), her crate and a few toys in it. SHe sleeps in her bed (whichis in the crate) and has been going on the pads everytime. SHe doesn't really cry at night or when I go in the morning (she knows the routine by now) unless I come home late and she hears the gagage open. It appears as if she is using the pads sometime in the middle of the night (if she goes in early) and/or in the am (between 5 and 6). She even seems to have tomove her bowels at night (midnight) and in am. This has been working (I think). I leave the pen door open during the day (when someone is supervising) and she seems to be going back and forth into it and going intoit to use her pads (and evenjumps into her bed to take a nap or gather ALL the toys in the room). I think she loves her crate just because she likes to fill it with all the bones a stuffed animals she can find (especially all of my other puppie's toys). I believe in the one room ata time method. This means that we pretty much all hang in the den (which is near the backdoor) with FiFi. The pen is near the door with the pads being in the pen and right next to the door. FiFi goes outside and uses the pads in her pen. So.....would you still put her into a shut crate at night? Right now she is downstairs with my other dog (who has lately been sleeping with my son (room right next to den). My goal is that FiFI will be able to sleep with my daughter (or me to start) all night. So.what do you think? SHe is using pads in pen. She gets up, uses them and goes back to sleep. I do not mind putting crate in my room (or another crate) and a pad next to it. Suggestions???- Kath P.S. We travel her around a lot and she does hold it for all of that. She even got a full bath and sanitary trim and she did not have an accident there. SHe wiated until we got home. She sat through a very long tax apppointment and didn't go anywhere (nor get figity). And whenever with her we do keep putting her on the pad and praising her for going. Ok...enough of me talking. lol Quote:

| Frustrating...... Ok... We've had Bailey for over 2 weeks now and he's still crying when in the crate... We put him in there at bedtime (mind you, he's been out playing for hours before then) and I tell him "Go to bed" while putting him in there. He won't stop crying for at least 30 min. In the morning, when I leave for school, I can hear him crying when I'm driving away. And when I put him in there while I'm cleaning, ect during the day (he's only in there for 25 min max at a time) he cries non-stop. I put an old shirt of mine in there. That didn't seem to help. NONE of my other dogs have taken this long to 'adjust' to a crate. He's not going potty in it, which is a blessing, but the crying is getting old. I know it's because he wants to be out with me, but I can't allow him out of his crate while I'm gone. Can ANYONE give me some more tips/suggestions? My fiance's patience is wearing thin..... |

| When he whines when you're home, do you let him out while he's whining?? If so, you should not. Don't let him out until he stops whining. If you let him out while he's whining, then he will associate whining with being let out and will never stop. Maybe try feeding him in the crate with the door open. Then next time close the door while feeding him. I've never personally tried this, but I've heard of people doing this before. I'm sure it's hard since he won't ever stop whining, but hang in there. The puppy days are so great, yet so frustrating at times too!

| If my puppy was going on the pad every time I would just keep doing what I am doing. You know what they say " Don't try to fix what isn't broken" |
