Do you put Bailey in the crate at other times during the day, besides when it's time to sleep?? You might want to put him in the crate when you're around too, doing things so he doesn't always associate the crate with you not being around. If he cries when you put him in there, don't let him out until he stops. And the penny thing sounds like a good idea. I have an empty bottle of water with a few pennies in it on the coffee table and I shake it if he does something I don't want him to do and he won't stop when I tell him no.
Also, try putting an old shirt or something of yours that has your scent on the crate to comfort him.
Good luck and keep with it. I swear by crate training!!
