| Potty Pads Hello! Rocky sleeps with us, he is 4yr and 6.5lbs. He paws my face when he needs to get up in the middle of the night. Not very often. I use to think he was playing when he did this in the middle of the night, then I put the accidents on the bathroom rug to the pawing and realized he wanted to get up. We have a two-story, and the pad is on the main level by the bathroom there. We have a little alcove, the bar, with a counter top and a small refrigerator undert he counter and his pad is by the refrigerator. He will do that scratchy thing after he goes potty and that means "hey I just went, and now I want a good boy treat". Has us traied well ((smile)) But it works, so why stop a good thing. Works when we go visiting to. I show him where I put the pad and he returns to do the job. We he was a puppy I kept him in a small area while he was out of the crate and he had to earn more space by being good with the potty thing. He now has the run of the house when we go out. Once in a while we have an accident, but the most part he is good. He will go through 1 pad a week. He uses the outside when he is out, but I do not say anything. When I was training him to use the pad he wuold scratch at the door to go in! The breeder is confident of the two getting along. It will be a love/hate relationship at first. She is the same gal we got Rocky from. The puppy will be 1.5 lbs when we get him. He will be in the crate until he earns the space as well. Now if I could get Rocky to stop barking all the time it would be fine. But he is doing his job! I still looking for mu bulk #, I re-filed and now I cannot remember where I put it. ((smile)) Loved the chatting! |

| training Wow! Your new puppy should almost be joining your family! Cool! Thanks for all of the feedback. You have been very helpful. You mentioned that you will use the crate (and did). I am assuming that that means all night and all day. Do you guys work out of the house all day or are you able to get home to let them out? I mentioned that I am going to begin to crate her at night (in a pen right now) and still give her the pen during the day. I don't think that she can hold it all day (as little as she is). I don' t think it would be healthy. She does use her pad in her pen. She has been pretty good about going in ther and using it. I have been getting her to go on command. Although, tonight, she did a strange one. She went on her pad when I asked her to but then she was running around and pooped behind a chair. I wasn't happy. I had a hard time getting over it so I did not catch it in time. I did tell her no and put her back on her pad though. Well, time for sleep now. I am going towake her and put her into a crate. SHe will not behappy. She has been going on her pads in the pen at night but I know that the crate will help to have her learn to get better control of her bladder. Do you agree? - kath Quote:

| hehe i was just browsing the posts and as i was reading this one, my little Tobey went potty on his pads! LOL i brought him home 2 days ago... and have been frusterated. always used pads with all my small dogs & i know it takes time, but he was showing no knowledge of the pad at all. Sorry, i was excited! you guys are good luck... treats have always worked for me, but each dog is different. so far he doesn't realize why he's getting one... |

| training Yea for him!! Kudos!!! This must be a good day. Last night (11 pm) I put my FIFI into her crate (instead of leaving her in her pen) to go to sleep. I heard her moving around at 3 am. I took her out and she went on her pad (I put her in the one in her pen). I then heard her moving around at 5 am. Out again we went. ANd, again she went on her pad. I left her in there at that point and gave her breakfast. I crawled back into sleep for one more hour. I got her to go on command each time (becasue she had to go so bad) and praised her with hugs and yeas (she doesn't take treats). I am hoping that she will learn to hold it longer through the night now. I like the crate method because then you are able to get them to go on command. I was afraid that she was too small to do it but I am going to keep trying this through the nights and hope that it works. I will still keep her in the pen during the day unless anyone thinks differently. I work from 7 am until 5ish most days. ANy thoughts from anyone???? In the meantime, my kudos go to you and good luck! It will work out. - kathy Quote:

| Orinskye Can you please describe in detail your praise AND punishment method. My little one will sometimes run to the paper on his own to do his business, sometimes stopping in the middle of play to do this, then other times, usually when he goes pee pee, he will run off to the hallway and pee, when I catch him in the act, I say No No, on the paper and I put him on the paper. Why does he sometimes get it all right (everytime he goes on the paper, I praise like crazy and have started giving him a little treat). I wish he could make the praise/treat connection every single time and stop peeing on the carpet. |

| training I think what they say about yorkies being stubburn is correct. My other puppy (cocker/bigon mix) is completely trained and she is also 17 weeks old. for her, I kept her crated whenever I was not home or could not keep my eyes on her at all times. I would take her outside just about every 20 minutes. i would tell her to go "potty" and then give her a treat. She actually started to fake me out and run to the side and pretend to go when she wasn't. They say that the fastest way to train an dog is to actually catch them going in the wrong spot so that you can grab them up, loudly tell them "no" and take them to where they should go. When there praise them with "good girl and a treat" if they go. then, bring them in the house and let them run around before you put them back into the crate. If they do not go then you always put them right back into the crate and take them out every 15 minutes until they go. Once they go, repeat (praise, treat, and time out and about ruinning the house with you next to them for about 15- 20 minues). Doing this worked great for all my other dogs. This one, I was afraid to crate her because of her size (1 1/2 lbs) and this fear of glyco..something. I finally decided that I need to go back and treat her similiar to the others. I am going o crate her during the night. And pen her during the day (at least for now). I would like to go to the crate during the day when I know that I can get home for her in enough time to let her out. When I am home I will use the crate, tke her out to go. If she goes then I will say," good girl, pick her up and pet her all over." If she should begin to have an accident then I will scoop her up with tail underneath (all while harshly saying "no" and place her onto her pad or ouside (whichever is closest). If she goes on her pad I will go back to praising her. If not, then I will leave her in her crate until I think she may have to go (30 minutes), take her out and bring her to where she has to go. I will do tis until she goes and I can praise her. Then, I will let her run around with us. This workded fast and great for my other ones. My yorkie doesn't take treats. I think I willhave to find a treat she likes. that will probably help. Someone mentioned live treats. I think I will stop at the store now. Now, mind you, I am far from the expert. I have been trying all kinds of things myself. Hopefully, I will figure this thing out soon. But, I am going to try and pretend (even though she is so litle and cute) that she "is a dog" and that means I need to train her as such (well, except for the pads, the size and she can't do the steps, the hair over her eyes and not being able to maybe see everything in front of her, ....laughing).- Kathy Quote:
