| ![]() I think I may have messed up! It looks as if giving Drake a treat everytime he pees or poops on his pad is NOT the right thing to do?? I'm not sure if I've misunderstood some of the posts I've read or not! My question of the day....should I be giving treats for this or just praise?? Thanks, Karla ![]() |

| ![]() despite what people say on here,.......... do what works for you, experiment and see hwo it goes............ i tried what everyone else suggested and was nice and ignored the accidents and praised the non-accident........ but it didnt work at all... so, i did the treat AND punishment method (which are supposed to be nono's) and they worked wonders for me, he doesnt really have many accidents anymore |

| ![]() I think you should do what works for you. I got my little zoey 2 weeks ago she just turned 3 months on the 28 of febuary, and i was a little confused on the potty thing. I had so many people telling me what i should do but i got her some treats and everytime she went to her pad and did he thing i gave her a treat and i would pet her, It worked great for me so far i could be in the family room and she would be with us just playing with her toys and she would just get up and i'll get up to see where she's going, she will be on her pad doing her thing. Zoey has been really good, i think she learned pretty fast.. |

| ![]() We are giving Esme treats when she goes potty on her pad. So far it's worked. Of course, she still has the occasional accident... but I think the treats are a great incentive to do good... Also, when we give her a treat, we pet and praise her like crazy. I'm hoping that eventually we can cut out the treats and stick to just the pet and praise... Good Luck and do what works for YOU!

| ![]() I agree - do whatever works for you. Here's my experience - We were giving Hercules treats and after probably 2 months with relatively good success, I realized he started to fake pee in order to get treats. He would get us to take him outside, and then he would squat in his little pee box like he was peeing and then go inside to the treat area and jump up and down for a treat. But he never peed! So what we started to do was give him a treat probably half the time (ok maybe more, he's too cute resist!). So maybe cut the treats down, so he doesn't rely on getting a treat.

| ![]() The "treat & praise" worked beautifully for Toto's pad training! She too tried the little trick of squeezing out a little tiny spot of pee pee for a treat [we found this so cute]! After the "critical" period of watching her like a hawk in the beginning everything kinda tapered off ... she would come and let us know that she had used the pad and wanted her treat. Later on that stopped too and it's just as natural as breathing for her ... she needs to pee pee ... she goes to her pad [sometimes pretty doggoned fast! ![]() ![]()

| ![]() I agree to do what works for you and your baby, but Yorkies are a bit harder and longer to Housebreak than Pad Train, I found it best to give "Praise" rather than treats, in both cases, only because he was more excited to make me happy than receive/eat a treat. But I was very Lucky, he picks-up/learns everything after only a couple of times....so I only give him "Praise" at this point I don't even bother with the treats as a reward, I use them for his snacks. ![]() |

| ![]() Neither treats nor praise seems to be really working for my puppy , it's kinda a hit and miss thing , she gets so distracted when we are outside that she seems to forget to potty , I walk with her and remind her to go "potty" some times this works and some times it does not. She seems to have an easier time with potty then poopie , any suggestions? |

| ![]() How old is she? It takes quite a while until they are completely house trained that is with no accidents. You should try to put her on a consistent schedule? After she has eaten and done drinking water, ample time to digest? Just watch her she will let you know? And whenever she finally does do it, give her plenty of praise get excited, then she'll know and understand what you want her to do? Usually in any kind of training all they want to do is make you happy. You just need to make it obvious to them? But never scold them, these dogs (fur persons) are very sensitive....a slight change in the tone of my voice and he knows exactly how I feel, almost as if he understands everything? Good Luck! ![]() |

| ![]() I am very happy to hear that she is doing well. It means that there is hope for us all. Are you crate training her? Or is she in a pen with a crate and a wee wee pad? Can anyone who has a little one under 2 lbs tell me exactly what is working for them. Crate? Pen with weewee pads? Pads in several rooms? Thanks-Kathy ![]() Quote:

Toto's ideal weight according to her bone structure is no more than 3 lbs. Her weight at present due to way too much love, lack of exercise and spoiling is 5 lbs.!! ![]() She began learning to go to the pad the day we brought her home and it didn't take her long to get the hang of it. We were with her 24/7 and when she went on the pad we gave her a treat and lots of praise. If she went on the floor, she got nothing ... just ignored. She soon learned that if we weren't watching and she went on her pad she would come to us and let us know!! If you yell at them [according to what I have read] they think you don't want to "see" them do it and it will cause them to go behind a chair, another room or anywhere you can't "see" them do it! After a few weeks there were fewer and fewer accidents and after a couple of months she would find her pad ... even in another part of the house! It takes time, patience and consistency. ![]() We started her off with the crate at night. We then bought an X-pen and put it in the room where we spend most of our time during the day. If your area is carpeted you can spread a heavy duty shower curtain over the carpet and set the pen up on it to protect from accidents. In the pen we put one of her little beds, food/water, toys and her wee wee pad. We leave the gate open and she always knows that her "stuff" is there! Well, with the exception of a bzillion toys she keeps strewn all over the house like a two year old!! It's also handy because we travel and any time we have to leave her for a few minutes we simply put her in and lock the gate. The X-pen is great because you can adjust the size according to the space available. We set her pen up everywhere we go and it's always familier to her and we don't have "accidents" anymore! ![]() ![]()

| ![]() I gave Rocky a treat when he used his pad and now he is 4 years old and still likes a treat for being 'good boy'. He goes and scrathes on the rug after going. No big deal realy, just alittle treat and gets bothersome at times like when you have company - - it worked and thats just fine with us. Besides it just a little treat. kare |

| ![]() Thank you so much for yur reply. Just a few moe questions, if you do not mind. You mentioned that you started off with a crate. Did she use it and keep it dry all night? How long did you use the crate at night? Did you use it long or just switch over to the pen? Do you still use the crate at night? What times did she stay dry in the crate from? Do you think it is necessary to still use the crate? Does your little one sleep in the crate at night or the pen? Or does she sleep with you and hold it until morning when she makes it to her pad? Presently, I have her little crate inside of her pen. I have been having her sleep in the pen at night and she is in it during the day too (when I am at work). SHe sleeps inher bed (which is in the crate, whichis in the pen). I keep her crate in the pen just in case, at some point, I wanted (or needed) to start closing it. Or, maybe the crate isn't necessary??? You mentioned that you take your pen places. Why? Would she have accidents at places otherwise or would she be able to find her pad whereever you put it. I find it funny that when I take my little one somewhere and put down the pad that she can run across the room and come back and find it. At home, I noticed that when she is in the pen, she uses it all the time (except once when the pad had too much urine on it). However, when out of the pen (she got out while I was at work yesterday), I have found a few poops and then again one in my daughter's room. FiFi fell asleep with her and I forgot to get her out in time. I think she was heading for the pad but it escaped her before she made it (I hope). Was your puppy able to hold it all night prior to putting her in the pen? Why did you take her out of the crate at night time? Or, is she in the crate at night and the pen during the day? Sorry for all of the questions. I am sure that I will have a few more (laughin).- Kathy "YorkieTalk.com Forums - Yorkshire Terrier Forum Yorkie Info Forums" <webmaster@yorkietalk.com> wrote: Quote:
