Default Potty Training

Sorry, it was not me who wrote the post. But When we got Rocky the breeder was already paper training him and I got the piddle pads and treats and he was very easy too train (hoping baby #2 is as well)

Rocky slept all night after 3 nights at out home. He wakes me up now to go downstairs. Majority of the time he holds it all night. He sleeps with hubby and I. I use to put a piddle pad in the bathroom upstairs and he would use that. I decided not to give him too many places!

Time and paitence and it will come

Default Training

It sounds like you did not use a crate. Did you go right to having him sleep with you? How much did he weigh when you brought him home? At first did you use a pen or let him have free run? My little one is only 1 1/2 lbs. thanks- kathy

Default Rocky & Potty Training

He too was only 1.5 lbs when he came home. I had a hat box that I cute the side out of, till I got a kennel, I did not know I was getting to take him home that day. I put in a baby blanket and he crawled in and he whimpered once in a while.

I think he was an exception to the rule?!?! laugh, smile

After he got bigger and learned to move about more, he sleep at the foot of the bed. Now he sleeps at the head between Hubby and I

Default Potty Training

Hi. I am new to the board and I just got my Yorkie. He is 13 months now. His name is Tiko. I am trying to potty train him and I have read the previous posts. I usually just seclude him in a certain area with his toys, and when he tries to get out I put him on the pee pee pad. He goes on this pad after I watch him for a while. But I also take him out to boo boo. And he goes outside. Should I just let him run around and find the pee pee pad on his own? Tell me what to do. Please. I need help.

Default Training

Did you mean tosay 13 months or weeks? How much does he weigh? I can tell you that whenever I had a dog that weighed a decent amount I went straight for crate training. I put them in between 11 and 12 and left them in a room where I could not hear them cry (downstairs den near backdoor). I let them out in the morning between 5 and 6 (whne I heard first stir or whine). I continuously took them out (before play, after play, when excited). It always worked. A few accidents at first (I always seemed to just miss the incident). But very quickly accidents topped and comletely trained. This new one I have is so tiny that I am wee wee training and outside training her. Mostly because it is still cold here and she doesn't like the wind, snow or cold. I am still trying to figure out my system. I can tell you that presently I have a small crate inside a 5x5 pen. I have two pads in there also (opposite side of crate with bed in it). I lock her in the pen during the day when I am working and at night. She has been using her pads sometime during the night time and morning hour. I leave the pen open when we are in that room. She has been going in and out of pen and using the pad whenever she needs to. I still am not sure that this is the best method for nightime. Although, I wonder how a 1 1/2 can holdit all night long without harming her kidneys. I believe in crate training but I am unsure for one this little. I know she can holdit for a while. We travel her around and she has not had any accidents (so far). She doesn't cry or anything if she needs topotty in the middle of the night she jsut does it and goes back to sleep. So.....I am wondering. But, Idowant ther to be able to sleep all night and with my daughter (without having tohelp her off the ped and takeher to a pad every night). -Kathy

Default Tiko

I meant to say 13 weeks. He 13 weeks and weighs 2 pounds. I haven't tried the crate method. So I just leave him in the crate with his potty pad and eventually he will get the hang of it? You said that you don't keep him in the room also. Is that the best way? What size crate is the best? I put him in an area blocked off with the pee pee pad and he just steps all over it.

Default Potty Training

Well..I have to say I think my way is working for "my" little one, so far ( I this may change if you ask me later though). I would not leave him in his crate with a potty pad. His crate is to be only big enough for him to stand up and turn around. It is not for eliminating. If you want a pad to be near him then I would do a crate and put pad outside of it so that you can take him out of the crate and put him on it.

The best suggestions that were given to me (if you work all day and can not come home to let him out) is to put him into a crate at night. Put him in around 11 or 12 (initially) and let him out around 5 or 6. You may have to do one in the middle too. the object is to just keep extending it out until you get to the times that you want. That has always worked great for me. If you can come home during the day then I would crate also. The object is to keep extending it out too. If you keep letting them out during the day then they will get use to that. I had only a few accidents with my other puppy and now she goes from 7 until 4 or 5 (or later if I really needed). This yorkie is different in that she is only 1 1/2 lbs. Everyone made me nervous with all the possible health issues that could occur (hyper"something, kidney problems etc). All of that made me crazy. So, I set up her crate ( smallest crate size) and put a divider in it and a soft bed. I put this into a 5x5 square shaped pen (was smaller before). I put the pads on the left and the crate on the right (I use to have the pads in front of the crate (only room enough for crate and a pad in front). After I saw that she was going on the pad, I made it (pen) bigger, separating the pads so that I could see if she was getting it. I leave her in it during the day (when I am at work) and at night (except last night, I will explain in a minute). I leave the pen door open during the day. This is set up is in a den that we have all been hanging in (I believe in the one room at a time method). I keep placing her back through the door of the pen, and onto the pads, with directions to go "potty" and praise her when she does. It took a few days, but now she goes in and out and uses the pad (I still keep placing her on it). I was thinking last night of putting her into a crate at night to help her to learn to hold it longer and also to make sure that she really is getting the idea. I have another crate upstairs in the bedroom. I saw that she had just went potty on her pad and I was tired early (10pm). I decided to bring her upstairs with me and lay with her for a few minutes before putting her in. We fell asleep. She moved a few times during the night but I kept her under my wing. She finally got up around 5 am. I took her right down to her pen and went back up to bed. That made me realize that she can hold it in for a while. She did not wet upstairs and she held it until she was in her pen. Not bad! I came down at 6 and found poop on the pad. Tonight, well, I am planning on the crate in my room (I don't normally believe in putting puppies, when starting, in the bedroom). I think they sleep better, and get use to you not being there every second, when you are not sleeping in the same room with them at first. I would normally still leave her downstairs but my other puppy has been sneeking off to sleep wih my son, before I have a chance to crate him. Since she has been proving to be completely trained, and staying asleep the entire time with him, I am permitting this (she is only 14 weeks!). She was completely crate trained! I still do not trust FiFi (my yorkie). I still think that she would walk off, while I would be asleep, and poop somewhere in the room. But, I can see now, that she is capable of holding it. I can tell you, that she does travel around with me and hold it the entire time. The reason I want crate training is because then you can teach them to go on command. My other puppy goes on command. When you crate train you can teach that. The problem with a pen (and not seeing them go) is that you do not always know when they went to plan for travel. That essentially becomes my main reason for wanting to crate train her. I am, however, working on getting her to go on command now. It seems to be working. Ok..I have just rambled a lot here. One last thing. The other problem with the bedroom is that you feel bad (as I did last night) and you sleep with them. What if the bed is too high and she can not get off (even if she wanted to) to get to her pad)? Then what? She may not wake you and may just go potty right on the end of your bed. She did this to my daughter the first week. Oh yea, the reason I am actually thinking of crating her in the bedroom is so that I can hear her to take her out and onto the pad when she has to go (and then put her back in). The only problem with that idea is that I do think it will be real hard to take her out and then not hug her vback to sleep after. It may actually be best for me to crate her (within her pen) downstairs from 11 until 5ish and then work out from there. I will debate tonight unless another reader can give me a suggestion on that. - Kathy

Its weird, I never give Nikko treats and so far he impresses me when doing his business. I just praise him like crazy. Once he gives me the sign, i take him outside, in a matter of 3 minutes hes done. Its also cold in Toronto, maybe thats why it takes him so quick!

Default Praise/training

It is true. My yorkie doesn't take any treats either. I just praise her, picker her up and pet her all over. They do say that the sold makes them go faster but my little one was funny. She just sat there and would shake. or, she would shake and try and jump up on me. She does go outside though when I take her out. I really do believe in the outside versus the pad but I was afraid that she would not be able to hold it for my 9 or 10 hour work day. Maybe she could. My other puppy (bigon) can. Either way, she is doing well. She goes on the pad during the day and goes into it when we are all out and about in the room. We even went to someones house yesterday and put down a pad and she went on it. She does go outside when we ake her out too. It is just that those pads are so expensive. I hope to be able to change them to the kind of pads that are used on the hospital beds. Anyone know a cheaper, or more cost effective way to get these pads. Or, is it better to switch to paper? - Kathy

Default Potty Pads

Yes, they are a little expensive, but I order them off line in bulk. It just works great for me. As far as the hospital pads, they do not have the scent that the pads do. The scent attracts the puppy. I tried newspaper and Rocky just torn it up!

He is soaking up the sun as I speak.

I am getting him a livein playdate the week of the 28th! I am excited.

Where do you get them in bulk? HOw much and how long do they usually last you? How many do you have placed around your house? Did you start off with more and later cut down? - Kathy Thanks

Default Potty Pads

I will locate my bulk buying and post it here. I only have one in the house. It is by our main level bathroom. Off to the side so it is some what private. He is good about using it.. He has woke me up in the middle of the night to be taken down to use it. He will use it then scratch for a treat. Silly boy. he will use this when we go to friends, car, boat, and the cabin. He loves his little treats and will even bark to go inside to use the pad. I will not use then out side nor will I give him a treat outside. It has been 4 years and we still give a treat. I beleive he has earned this.

Right now he is sleeping on my lap as a baby. We are getting him a play mate the week of the 28th. We will then have Rocky and Bull winkle. He runs to his collar to indicate he wants to got in the car to find Bull winkle. I love my Kids and Fur babies. Kare

You sound like you are lucky with your RockyDog. I would love toknow where to get thes pads in bulk! you stated that you have only one pad. How many floors is your house and where is this one pad in relation to the bedroom and or/downstairs (backdoor)? Did you say that you crated your little one? How much does he weigh now? Presently I have one pad in a pen. This is all downstairs near the backdoor. I have a dog bed and the pad (in a litter pan) in it. She uses that whenever we are in that room. She has been good about that. The problem was when she slept with my little one (whos room is right next to this room). FiFi woke up and went to the end of the bed and pooped and then went back to sleep. She also did this once on the bottom of my bed. We were asleep so it wasn't seen until too late. After that I put her back into this pen for sleeptime. I was thinking of crating her at night in the bedroom and just keep taking her out (if she doesn't mess the crate up) and putting her on the pad. I did this once and she went on the pad (almost on command). However, instead of putting her back intothe crate I let her sleep with me (that was when she pooped on the end of bed). She seems to always have togo sometime during the night time (she doesn't eat late either). I will try the liver treats. Right now she takes none. Although, this may make potty time more. I guess I should be putting her into her crate when Ineed toput her down while we are home so that I can keep reinforcing potty too Hmmmmmmmm. ANyway, good luck with your new one. Should be fun. Hope RockyDog is OK with a new arrival and doesn't become too territorial. Should work out great! How big is your new one? - Kathy
